⛯ little lucifer ; look at that face. he wouldn't hurt a soul! this is what goes through the heads of those who meet hyojun at first glance, but they've yet to see the mischief beyond his cute exterior; he's almost always planning something fun (read: stupid) behind that endearingly adorable smile. a fallen angel, his friends believe him to be. just like lucifer. variations include demon and spawn of satan.
⛯  the younger kang ; depending on who's speaking, this nickname's variations also include 'the funny kang' and 'the bad kang'. it was the way most adults referred to him and distinguished him from his older brother, and it was eventually adapted by some peers (including the group) as a way to , and hyojun does not like this fact at all.
⛯ hyotsun ; good luck pronouncing this one. hyojun's weeb friends (if any, otherwise,,,, oof) would agree that he acts like the popular archetype at least 80% of the time, especially in regards to receiving affection from others, thus the nickname was coined. it's one of the lamest puns he'd ever heard, but what can he do...

there's a loud set of footsteps approaching, and you look around for the source of sound. the unknown person's feet accelerate in speed as they increase in volume. you start to worry about getting toppled, but your thoughts are interrupted when someone finally sprints into the room, barely missing your figure as he zooms right past. he slows down and halts upon sensing the presence of another being.

taking the lack of motion as a chance to observe, you look the boy up and down. his sizeable height seems almost mousy in his choice of clothing; the soft beige sweatshirt he's clad in drapes loosely around his thin frame, long sleeves barely covering the tips of his fingers and hanging loosely at his sides. the light-washed skinny jeans are a slight contrast, as they shape the lower half of his figure quite nicely.

he approaches you slowly and crouches down, giving you a better view of his face. his almond shaped orbs are big, brown, and inquisitive, staring at you warmly with a subtle glint of mischief in them, his skin is clear and a fair complexion, complementing both his outfit and unkempt hair, with a fringe that nearly reaches his eyes of the same colour. this kid has a boyish charm, you think as his lips curl up into a wide and devilish grin. he's cute, if not a little terrifying.

he scoops you up into his arms, and your train of thought is broken as you revel in his warmth. he chuckles at your purr of delight. "come on, kitty," says the boy in a hushed whisper, "junnie's taking you to aa's. i can't wait to see the look on their face."

PERSONALITY.
 

kang hyojun has the looks of an absolute sweetheart — people often squeal and pinch his cheeks upon meeting him, cooing about how cute and innocent he looks. they’re not entirely wrong, but… not quite right in their assumptions, either. hyojun’s angelic exterior is deceiving in the sense that it lures one into believing that he could do no harm. don’t get him wrong, though: while he appears [surprisingly] quiet and tame around new environments, he’s always looking for trouble. when his eyes are roaming around the room, he’s not feeling awkward; if anything, he’s simply waiting for an opportunity to strike.

his love for mischief is arguably hyojun’s defining trait — he thrives in the thrill of venturing into restricted areas and somehow managing not to get caught. he dives headfirst into situations without sparing the time to think things through, believing that the logical perspective tends to ruin the fun in most things. he is somewhat idealistic when it comes to his schemes, often biting more than he could chew, resulting in the repercussions slapping him and whichever unlucky souls he’d managed to drag in the face. while it can be irritating, hyojun seems to enjoy making attempts at charming his way out of the incidents he puts himself in, often succeeding with an apology — one that makes up for its lack of sincerity through the awkward ramble and endearingly sheepish look on his face — and when all else fails, he has no choice but to run away and deal with it later; a simple but temporary solution to most of his problems. hyojun’s approach to life is, no doubt, juvenile to the point of being foolish. those who are closest to him have no problem nagging him, telling him to act his age and stop being such a child. he’d dismiss those who do so with a disinterested nod and a wave of the hand, but it’s clear he’s not listening.

while he'd probably do them more harm than good at times, hyojun still remains a good friend to those who stick by him. yes, he can be straight up intolerable — what with his troublesome ways and constant jabs (“i don’t understand??” “it’s you we’re talking about, zz, so why are you surprised?”)  — but hyojun cares deeply about his friends, he just doesn’t know how to be vocal about it. there’s a reason he’s managed to stay close with the group for so long; for every time he playfully complains about receiving skinship from the others and being their personal vent box, he truly revels in the attention, and somehow, they all could see that. hyojun seems like a typical kid his age, doing things for fun rather than value and enjoying youth with his almost equally crazy peers, but he is a lot more emotional and considerate than what he lets on — he'd never admit it, but he has a very big heart, and will probably act on it one way or another, usually in a subtle manner. if you receive random spam texts from him (usually ending in '' or 'head') asking for attention or cuddles, he means it. and he may sound demanding, but it takes him quite a lot just to communicate these feelings, especially with him being so unsure about himself all the time.

because for all his bravado and sharp tongue, hyojun's always doubting himself and how important he really is to those he values. ultimately, he doesn't amount to much. he dulls in comparison to the likes of yy and his beloved older brother, who seem to shimmer so effortlessly in the limelight. he buries the truth deep in his heart and in the back of his mind; he gets into so much trouble just to get the attention he craves so badly, rather than being overshadowed by those who shine brighter than him. while it's not the best approach, it works. and so, he continues to rebel.

BACKGROUND.
 

hyojun wouldn't call his story particularly eventful — born and raised in seoul, grew up in a humble abode amongst a fairly small neighbourhood, never moved — if anything, he finds it rather boring. aside from his lack of content in his normative lifestyle, his family had all been the 'good people'; friends with everyone, unproblematic, warm, kind, just... they seemed so perfect. they were just there, and people appreciated them for that.

hyojun was a little different. while his dad would help the elderly cross the street; his mom smiling sweetly and conversing with their new neighbours; jinhyuk sitting in his room, doing his homework like the good boy he was, the younger kang would be running around in town, jumping fences and stealing mints from the local convenience stores whenever the owners aren't looking. it's all good fun for little hyojun, who finds pleasure in seeing the priceless looks on his victims' faces — especially those who'd perceived him as a kind, harmless child — but mr and mrs kang became genuinely concerned about their second child's behaviour. their long talks with hyojun became more serious and forceful as he grew up, but two things remained the same; his brother was always mentioned as the great role model, the good example, and those words were the ones that stuck every time.

he was only ever known as kang hyojun — he never had any of those titles, such as angelic jaehwan, pretty yy, or even good guy jinhyuk. those around him all seemed to have a place in the little hall of fame that his mind had made up. they all had a role, a purpose in life. he kind of just drifted. so, he strived to enhance and exaggerate his existing traits in hopes of standing out. it's earned him a somewhat mixed reputation throughout his years in school, with his peers either loving or hating him utterly. but for now, it was okay. he had fun. troublesome or demon hyojun wasn't the most ideal of titles to be known by, but it was better than nothing.

TRIVIA.

⛯ hyojun, while an interesting person to be around, was never sociable as a kid. in fact, he kept to himself and stayed silent unless prompted to do otherwise. therefore, he'd only engage in social interactions while pulling pranks and breaking rules with his fellow peers. most of them ran away and denied their contributions once caught by authorities — which was natural, hyojun couldn't really blame them — yet the few who decided to stick by him, suffer the consequences together, or even cover up for him when necessary had undoubtedly dug themselves a special place in his young heart. this is how hyojun befriended jaehwan and most of the others in elementary school; picture tiny figures running hand in hand into the high school long after everyone had left, laughing quietly as to not get caught, huge, buck-toothed smiles on their faces.

⛯ "so what are you planning to study in university?" his mom had asked one day, over a cup of tea, early in his senior year. hyojun had choked on his fried rice — he never actually put any thought into college. if anything, he didn't really want to go. but it wasn't every day that you had such eager parents who'd pay for all the expenses, and jinhyuk was always praised by their relatives for taking some fancy course with a long name hyojun can't remember. so, he does research to determine the easiest course to take, and finds english literature to be the best option. job opportunities are low and he's not some kind of genius with the english language, but he's a fast learner and he likes to write... so it shouldn't be all that bad, right?

⛯ he takes one or two lectures in the afternoon (hyojun is not a morning person) from monday to friday. he might go on a saturday if he's really that behind. hyojun doesn't participate in any extra-curricular activities at the moment for nothing's really caught his eye yet — but watch him join the most bizzare group ever — therefore leaving him a fair amount of free time.

⛯ hyojun absolutely adores cats with all his heart ("what heart?" bb or zz would ask jokingly, and whatever cat hyojun's holding would hiss at them), and will protect them at all costs. unfortunately his dad's allergic so a feline friend in the house was never an option, but expect him to visit his friends who own cats just a tad bit more than others.

⛯ hyojun's music playlist is an absolute mess™, with songs ranging from beyonce to fall out boy to drake to winner, and it's really nothing but a big dump of songs he thinks sound good. he doesn't have a specific genre or artist that he favors, meaning the songs on his playlist are really just the ones he finds catchy or has good lyrics that he enjoys listening to. 

⛯ hyojun can play the guitar bc his brother taught him; not too advanced in terms of technique, but he would steal jinhyuk's guitar and play sometimes. jam sessions w the squad in some weird forbidden place he took em to? bet!

⛯ a wild, reckless soul like hyojun's would be thought to be a party animal, but most nights he'd much rather lie in bed watching cat compilation videos. he also prefers drinking at someone's place (aa) rather than in public. however, he won't shy away from an invite, especially from people he'd actually enjoy partying with. just,,, don't let him drink. please. he'll dance on tables and knock over couches.

⛯ gets the squad into a lot of . like he'd have random 2am trips to the park and bring at least one other crackhead w him  bc he gets lonely and scared in the dark.

⛯ somehow managing to get a part-time job in a nearby starbucks, hyojun works on mondays, wednesdays and fridays from 4-8pm + 7-11pm on saturdays. you'd think he applied for it to get some extra cash, but honestly, hyojun just enjoys having four or five free lattes during his shift.

the many layers of han jaejin.

a boy with a soft smile on luscious lips, tall stature and smiling eyes, jaejin's looks are sure to catch the eye of just about anyone. his aura is captivating and magnetic, enough to make anyone worry about the dangers of such overflowing charisma. more cautious souls tend to shy away from the likes of him, in fear of being caught in his web of admirers. it's hard not to give in, though — jaejin's beauty appears beyond skin-deep, as seen whenever he cheerfully asks about someone's day, shows concern about their wellbeing, or helps clean up a mess he hadn't made. 

anyone who dares to get to know him further would see that jaejin is also open-minded and eager, always ready to try different things for the sake of gaining new experiences, regardless of the consequences. he gets bored rather easily and therefore is constantly seeking adventure. he's sensible enough to be aware of what's not and what is crossing the line, yet there are times he gets far too avid to realise until it's too late. it's safe to say that jaejin's child-like enthusiasm is both to his privilege and downfall; some find it endearing, and others, bothersome.

dig a little deeper and you'll find that in terms of others' feelings, jaejin can be quite oblivious, often finding himself in situations wherein he's said something misleading or insensitive and is left to deal with the consequences. he's quite known for leading people on, only to reject them with an apologetic smile, but that's mostly because he's unaware that advances are being made towards him. the cause of jaejin's general lack of consciousness seems to be leaning more towards innocence rather than blind faith, but you never really know, for his most genuine and unfiltered thoughts are kept hidden. mayhaps, he's not as perfect as he looks?

for deep, deep inside, jaejin knows that he cares for his enlightenment just a little bit more than others' emotional wellbeing. it's not that he's completely dismissive of things that don't benefit him — but when the person he's dating suddenly seems a lot less interesting, or a club he impulsively joined becomes boring, he won't hesitate to "take out the trash", as he would say. in simpler terms, he abandons anyone or anything that stops giving his life a little fun. it sounds both practical and harsh, which is the nature of this trait of his — he doesn't need the extra luggage, so he drops them at sporadic intervals... said luggage just doesn't know when to expect it.

hyojun had seen that face before; walking around campus or sitting in a few of his classes, sporting a lazily picked outfit that looks unnaturally good and a small grin with levels of genuineness that he'd constantly question. he was undoubtedly handsome, the type hyojun would spend lectures thinking about, but he was also that guy, the one who'd end up either straight, a boy, or both. he was either that or a goody-two-shoes, someone who's an absolute bore beyond the superficial. so he went on with his duties without so much as a curious glance — is he really all that bad?

it's on a fateful saturday night that hyojun sees a side of jaejin he'd never seen before. five minutes till closing, as he gets ready to turn the coffee machine off, a slouching figure staggers in, at least six textbooks and a macbook in hand. he plops himself down on one of the window seats, placing his items on the table. hyojun raises a disbelieving eyebrow. "hey, pretty boy. do you know what time it is?"

"five to eleven, last time i checked," mutters the man monotonously, half-lidded eyes already glued to his screen. hyojun blinks twice as his expression turns from exasperated to slightly amused. "you gonna order anything?"

the boy spares him a quick glance before going back to his [presumed] essay. "an americano would be nice."

"you know it's literally closing time, right?" hyojun finally points out with a slight chuckle, but he starts making coffee for both his late night company and himself anyways. everyone else had left him to do closing for the night. they didn't need to know.

jaejin turns away completely from his macbook this time, adjusting his chair to face the counter, and subsequently, hyojun. there's a hopeful, somewhat cheeky smile plastered on his gorgeous face. hyojun gulps. "my dormmate's ing some girl and i can't do my essay in that kind of environment. it's due tomorrow and i have a couple paragraphs to go. so if you would please be a sweetheart and let me stay just another ten minutes or so..."

and just like that, hyojun keeps the starbucks branch open for another thirty minutes, knowing fully well that his manager would kill him in the event of her finding out. though no one but jaejin is present, and he makes it clear he wouldn't tell a soul. besides, he receives a wink and a number written hastily on a small, ripped piece of textbook paper as tiny tokens of gratitude, so hyojun has to admit it's slightly worth it.

now playing ; nine in the afternoon. ♥

hyojun is sprawled across his bed and craving some fresh air one night. he calls jaehwan, but he doesn't pick up. the situation's the same for everyone else. they must be either busy or sleeping, he deducts with a loud sigh, browsing through his contacts. han jaejin seems to pop out of nowhere, and hyojun almost hesitates until he remembers just how he got his number in the first place. chuckling to himself as he relives the memory, he dials the boy, who answers after exactly three and a half rings.

"i've been waiting to hear from you," jaejin doesn't even give him time to say hello, "but i didn't answer right away because i'd sound too eager. i got that from the internet. it's a good source."

hyojun doesn't know whether to laugh or hang up, so he settles with the former, because this dork is his only hope of having fun tonight. "easy, tiger. you aren't busy or anything, aren't you?"

"it's half past twelve. what the hell would i be doing at this time?"

"girls. essays."

"...fair enough. i have neither. do you want me to come over or something?"

hyojun's lips curl up into a smile. he can already feel himself going soft for this man. but there won't be much softness, not tonight. "meet me at the park in around fifteen minutes."

at twelve forty five am, jaejin is pleasantly surprised and somewhat amused to see hyojun dragging a sack of toilet paper along the grass, making no attempt whatsoever at being discreet. "real subtle."

"shut up," hyojun whisper-yells, rolling his eyes. "we're tp-ing the benches."

by nine am, at least half the people visiting the park have had to pull toilet paper off their benches in order to sit comfortably, wondering who the hell would do such a pointless scheme. hyojun and jaejin are watching from their spot under a tree, mouths filled with cookies and cream ice cream, giggling about their successful practical joke.

hyojun admits — only to himself, for he's far too stubborn to give in to aa's nagging and zz will never let him live it down — it was indeed a stupid idea, but when he steals a quick glance at jaejin, cream-covered lips curled up into a wide grin, eyes crinkling into little crescents, almost golden as they reflect the tiny rays of sunlight seeping through the branches, hyojun figures he'd do it again, just to see more of that angelic face.

everything feels natural with jaejin, hyojun finds, so he does not notice his heartbeat slowly increase its rate as things begin to change — from them racing to reach their destinations to walking together hand in hand, sometimes listening to music whilst sharing earphones; from hyojun rolling his eyes as jaejin complains about the cold to bringing an extra jacket every night, even offering his own if he forgets; from awkwardly waving jaejin off as he enters his house — hyojun figured he didn't like walking in the dark, so he walks him home every time — to being invited in to stay the night, sharing a bed, waking up in a mess of tangled legs and his head buried in jaejin's chest. it's all part of a healthy, developing friendship, right?

it's not until they go stargazing at the football field one day — hyojun observes every constellation, then jaejin lying next to him, and decides he prefers gazing at the boy's face just a tad bit more — that hyojun realises; mayhaps, he wants han jaejin to be more than his partner-in-crime.
