hyunsoo is not that noticeable at first glance. he's very quiet and tends to keep to himself, resulting in him not having many friends. he has some trust issues so even if you approach him, it'll take some time and effort before he responds positively. however, those who do end up befriending him will know that he's a keeper! he will fight anyone who messes with you,,,, he cares about his friends and family v much but he's not like, sugary sweet about it?? will probably insult you at least three times a day, once if you're lucky [or rlly sensitive, bc he knows you'll take it hard], but there's no malice behind it. he's just being honest. also a hothead so he's kinda fun to tease! but don't take it too far bc he can be scary when actually angry. hyunsoo has a strong emotional drive and fights for justice, so he usually acts upon his feelings and doesn't spare time to think about the consequences. in general he's quite neutral and can even appear stoic, but he's constantly panicking internally. with saeho's disappearance, his composure is slowly deteriorating. overall, he will attacc and protecc but what he really needs is someone to defend and protecc him from this world,,,, oof.

; i totally see hyunsoo being aware that something is off, but either not bothering to think too much of it, or simply pushing it to the back of his mind, because he doesn't want to admit that anything's wrong. he's also not very observant in terms of details, thus failing to see the physical evidence of saeho's apprehension beyond the general atmosphere [during their last interaction before saeho leaves]. that's kind of just the weird way his instincts work?

background 

basically, he has an aussie dad and korean mom, both were young and not quite ready to settle down so his grandparents in baeju offered to take him in. his mom really didn't want to leave him behind but her parents would raise him well and give him a good, steady life, so she gave in. the couple went to australia together to build a steady life for their son to come back to. they cut off contact w his grandparents out of shame, but they thought they were simply ditching their son and responsibilities. that's not what they hesitantly told six year-old hyunsoo when he curiously asked why he didn't have young parents like his other peers did — "your parents... are on vacation, hyun-ah. they'll be back soon!" but by the time he reached his teenage years, he'd stopped believing those lies. hyunsoo developed a sense of incompleteness and feelings of inferiority due to the absence of his biological parents. his grandpa and grandma are amazing, yes, but he couldn't help but feel like he wasn't enough reason for his parents to stay. this also led to severe trust issues;  he couldn't feel an emotional attachment to other people without thinking they'll only leave him behind, just as he thought his parents did.

; actually a really good driver, so he borrows his grandma's car and is one of the drivers for the search!
; his grandparents are quite open-minded [compared to most baeju elders] and grew to love saeho as he often dropped by to give them food and chat. he was invited to dinner a lot of the time, but the month before his disappearance, he'd been declining most offers. hyunsoo's grandparents were the ones to encourage him to look for saeho, even giving him a sufficient amount of money to help with the expenses. he is close to his grandparents and will protect them with all his heart.
; started learning english when he was eleven and is proficient. made it a point to use an australian source. he claims it's solely for 'identity acceptance' purposes, but the true reason is that he wants to be able to communicate properly with his dad if they ever meet.
; closeted homoual. he's always been afraid of others' reactions, knowing damn well that being gay is frowned down upon, not only in baeju but a good portion of korea. he's somewhat oblivious to those who share his preferences, so he hasn't really found anyone he thought he could confess to. not even saeho, which is absurd, considering the amount of times saeho's hinted at being homoual himself. 
; somewhat prone to bullying, but mostly because bullies tend to entertain themselves with his aggressive reactions? like, they'd poke fun at him, call him emo or simply anything offensive, and he might take it to heart and will definitely fight them off. but it's nothing personal. they just like to see hyunsoo with an expression other than his resting face. there's also the fact that he's of mixed race, but there's a reason why hyunsoo doesn't go around showing his australian roots off anymore.
; likes to go to quiet/serene places in town by himself. he'd have his headphones blasting uncharacteristically soft music as he enjoys the fresh air and eventually sits down to cloudgaze, stargaze, or watch the sunset. he'll be doing this often throughout the trip!
; spaces out a lot during class. probably sits by the window seat.
; has a part time job at one of the town's local takeaways shops. probably gives freebies or discounts to saeho and his friends lol.
; is definitely the type to scold a younger student (one he's comfortable around, obviously) for cursing, then proceed to swear like a sailor at everyone else. generally avoids cussing in front of elders, but it slips out often. all the more reason for him not to talk.

; hyunsoo's playlist - often, misconceptions are made about hyunsoo listening to only emo or grunge music, in truth, hyunsoo's music taste generally involves upbeat electronic dance music or loud, crunchy guitar strumming. basically anything with noise — with his earphones blasting music at nearly max volume, it's much easier to ignore the voices of reason inside his head, and others' attempts at socialising with him ("it's technically not md being aloof, because i really didn't hear whatever they had to say in the first place.") (to sum up: don't bother talking to hyunsoo when he has his earphones on.)

relationships

will maybe update soon with some relationships! but for now, it's important to note that hyunsoo is a loner doesn't have many friends. therefore, if your chara's going to be friends with him, keep in mind that they're going to have worked very hard to break his walls uwu. he's also kinda savage and sometimes harsh towards his friends, but he really loves them and will be heartbroken if you break his trust!! 

(also, hyunsoo isn't exactly the best with people and interacting w them these days, so his way of blending in tends to be mirroring? he feels odd being the casual, laid back one in a group of serious busybodies. he does it with saeho a lot, both due to his nature and saeho's aura being that powerful.)

as for love interests,,,, i'd like to say hyunsoo doesn't have his eyes set on anyone at the moment, as he's too busy worrying about saeho and just in general — but he most definitely would have felt an attraction to several guys. he usually doesn't let his feelings go past that point in fear of getting hurt, but for most of the story hyunsoo is very vulnerable and also going to go through some character development. therefore, there's a high chance he may fall for a character who manages to sweep him off his feet during the search!

grandpa/grandma ; names and ages tba ; much more elaboration will be done when i get the time, but basically they're a bit more understanding compared to your regular baeju folk. they're not saeho's level of liberal, but they don't treat anyone differently for preferring modern culture. however, their resentment and false beliefs of hyunsoo's parents abandoning him had transferred into the boy's head, which caused one of his biggest struggles as a person. passive-agressively supportive. hyunsoo loves them a lot and feels like he's indebted to them for raising him when his parents couldn't. saeho's charm worked super well on them, allowing them to gradually accept changes that could be made in baeju, and therefore start to support saeho's cause! tl;dr: sweetheart gramps and gran, very uwu, much supportive, this fic deserves at least two (2) angel parents/guardians !

BACKGROUND in progress,,, but hyunsoo was in saeho's junior english class and he noticed him staring out the window blankly. saeho asked him a question which barely brought hyunsoo back from his thoughts and he surprisingly answered correctly (with his cute aussie accent aAA) !! at that moment saeho knew he was gonna protecc this kid. he basically courts hyunsoo to be his little mentee and after two torturous months, he finally lets his guard down around saeho.

; hyunsoo is a tsun but he's significantly softer around saeho. he's extremely grateful for him and though he's not good at showing it, he's definitely trying !!
; saeho helps hyunsoo unleash his potential by helping him study and just pushing him to do well !! without it being toxic, he won't pressure hyunsoo intentionally. he really wants hyunsoo to help him spread change and be a leader of baeju youth and he knows that the young boy is up for it, despite him being in denial.

; the ty bullies always spread rumours about them being an item but?? no?? hyunsoo in a gay panic: how in ery did they even know ?!? hyunsoo has gotten into three (3) fist fights bc of it. save his soul. 
; saeho's disappearance has worsened hyunsoo's slowly fading trust issues. due to this he finds it even harder to befriend new people, but he knows he'll have to put these feelings aside if he wants to find saeho.
; regardless of saeho's feelings about leaving, hyunsoo firmly believes that he shouldn't have left. he holds on to the theory that perhaps, this was temporary, and saeho will be happy to come back once they find him. has developed attachment issues towards saeho, to the point of feeling entitled to always having saeho around. actively tries to ignore the fact that he's taken saeho's presence in his life for granted, and that he probably left their hole of a town for good. tl;dr — he's fiercely optimistic about finding saeho. when convincing the others, he's convincing himself, as well.
; how he copes with saeho being missing is almost unhealthy; his blind faith that saeho will come back to them, to him, as soon as they find him; the constant brushing off of logical points made by the others, about how mr kim could literally be anywhere in korea right now and they're probably wasting their time searching with hardly any clues to follow; just the overall aggressive denial of the impeccable truth. saeho has left and is likely not coming back. he subconsciously did the same thing with his parents, always hopeful they'd come back for him and give him the affection he yearned for, until it came to a point where he'd just stopped hoping. that'd completely destroyed his self-esteem. if saeho had truly gone for good, there's no doubt the same question from all those years ago would be running through his head constantly — was he really not enough reason for them, for him to stay?
