< she once used to think liquid gold ran within her veins. song dohee, the unstoppable leader with five awards under her belt and an ocean of millions that would die for her, the untouchable idol that not even 500 mg of ambien chased by half a bottle of cheap rosé could demolish. what could a mere disease do to her—she is invincible, plowing through schedules and dance steps and hateful letters like she doesn't have the same lub-dub heartbeat as one of the fans she fondly (patronizingly) smiles at.

but then she watches the blood gush from seola's mouth, sees the crimson stain the floor (it's the same color as everyone else's, the nation's goddesses are no more deity than the neighborhood fool), and that's when song dohee realizes that death is blind to immunity cards and hollow trophies and flashing lights. even as she bravely taunts death to catch her, she'll always stagger back in fear when it finally stares her in the face. >

< dolce vita all'inizio - debut mini, title track: sixth sense >
kim younghee is seven when she realizes she is unwanted, collecting dust in some busan orphanage. "it's because you're ugly!" one of the boys shout during recess one day. she blinks back the tears and remembers to hold her head high, the matron of the house has always said that tears are a sign of weakness, giving permission for the world to tear you down.

at age 10 she stares defiantly at a couple who enters the orphanage, flashing cameras in tow. she's never heard their names ("dress nicely children, song jaewon and kim sunhee are coming!") but their faces are familiar, brilliant smiles on the tv screen when the unnies tell her to go away during their weekly drama night. when the woman reaches her hand out to her, she hesitates before taking it (what if she crumbles away, what if she disappears?) but soon she finds herself in a new bedroom, not one with peeling off-white paint and dusty bedsheets but one with a large dollhouse and a bathroom all to herself.

"it was her eyes," she overhears the woman—her mother, say to her friends, "they're absolutely captivating."

< dolce amore - album, title tracks: videocool hot sweet love  >
her teenage years are spent within the confinements of four mirrored walls ("umma, i want to be on tv, just like you!" "darling, if you work hard, you can achieve anything."). sweat, blood, and tears dedicated to the dream of debuting. kim younghee becomes song dohee, daughter of the a-list actor couple. she wants to remove the burden from her shoulders, wants to prove to the world that she is more than her family name and her background. it isn't too surprising when she becomes the entertainment's golden girl, just the right amount of talent, sob story, and charisma in a plastic package ready for marketing.

5 years of training, three nose jobs, and just enough hateful words from a computer screen to render her callous has culminated to one moment: the debut of dolce vita, sk entertainment's newest six-membered girl group, predicted to take south korea by storm. and so they do.

on february 2, 2012, she is the keystone, standing like the last solid structure on earth between the shaking maknae and the sobbing rapper as they prepare to take their bow during their debut stage. somewhere along the line, she's become rather fond of the members, having worked towards the same dream for the past few years.

but still, buzzing in her mind are all the mistakes she'd noticed during the performances and the amount of practice time they need to shove into their already packed schedules. she won't give the media an excuse to destroy them—she's worked too hard for too long to let this all go.

"to our vitamins, we'll work hard to show you a better image of us," immaculate, rehearsed lines, not a syllable out of line, "thank you for everything."

primadonna - extended play, title track: mini skirt >
the crowd is deafening, their first fanmeet after their recent comeback attracting more than five thousand fans. somewhere between her first and hundredth handshake, the faces begin to blur together, dohee's cheeks begin to hurt from smiling so much. she looks over the crowd, sees the homemade signboards and the lightsticks and she thinks, this is the legacy we've created.

for a moment dohee is lost in the immensity, not fully believing that the urchin girl with the turned up nose has managed to climb so far up that reality looks like diminishing skylines from a departing airplane, like nothing in the world could touch her from way up there.

and then she hears heeyeon begin to choke beside her.

she doesn't realize until a fan screams "what's wrong with yeonha unnie!" somewhere to her right, and the stage name doesn't register as anything until she turns and sees heeyeon scratching at raw like someone's removed all the oxygen in her room. dohee takes a quick glance at the container heeyeon has just dropped, lifts her foot to see the remnants of a half-eaten cookie she'd just stepped on. peanut butter delight.

"eunhye, where's her backpack?" dohee shouts amidst the chaos, security guards trying to control the panicking crowd, "there's an epipen in there somewhere—god ing dammit, eunhye, give me the backpack!"

within the span of five minutes, dohee begins her descent from mount olympus.

(later they discover that the cookies were in fact given by a scornful anti-fan who was bitter about the recent dating scandal involving heeyoung and the rapper of an up-and-coming boy group. the anti-fan gets her revenge with the price of heeyeon lying in a hospital bed for nearly three weeks. dohee swears she'll never let any of her group members near a hospital again.)

< HWANG SEOLA 황설아 - 21 - DOLVI MAIN VOCAL >
dohee remembers seola at age seventeen, bright like the sun, overwhelmingly talented and surprisingly resilient. her spirit and passion has always been the glue that kept dolce vita together, kept dohee from breaking away because despite everything she couldn't be the one to destroy her maknae's dreams.

dohee remembers dance practice, eunhye's soft-spoken instructions in contrast to her own stern criticism under perfectionist eyes. and then there was seola, always there to provide a driving force behind them. if even the leader was lacking in effort, she would catch on with a quick "unnie, we're all tired, but you shouldn't be setting this example for us!" (dohee had always been secretly jealous, so young and so much more for seola to accomplish, while she's almost hit a ceiling) always frank, always ambitious, but naive to the reality of the entertainment industry. even after being bombarded by hateful comments, seola seemed to burn brighter, firmly believing that if she had her dream and her fans to hold on to, nothing can bring her to the ground.

dohee reminds herself that a nebula collapses and crumbles in order to become a star. and as she watches her maknae fall to pieces from behind a glass partition, she prays to every god she knows that seola will be reborn as the brightest star in all of the galaxy.

< CHO SEUNGHO 조승호 - 28 - PRODUCER, RAPPER >
