It's also quite ironic because Baekhyun began calling her Sunshine long before their mutations.

History –
Before Seol was taken by the institution, the orphanage in the countryside was all she could ever remember. Having not known her biological parents, the caretakers at the orphanage became the substitute for her parental figures, but they didn't treat her like parents should ever treat their child. They were verbally abusive, liked putting the children down, and enjoyed invalidating their feelings. They were occasionally physically abusive, but rather than lifting a hand, children were denied food if they misbehaved. Seol, having never known any other life, believed this was normal, and continued to live this way without ever attempting to seek external help. Many of her peers grew up angry, bad-tempered, and brutish. Seol mentally adapted in a different way. Instead, she grew up jittery, anxious, and unable to gain self-confidence without the approval of another. While her peers became more defiant as they grew to develop their own conscious thoughts and opinions, Seol constantly seeked the approval of her caretakers, no matter how cruel or ridiculous their demands were. Being the deviant among her peers, she was eventually outcasted.

That didn't last for long though because the institution took her when she was eight years old. They came out of the blue one night; pressed chloroform against and stole her away. Seol woke up disoriented in a strange room. You could imagine her state of panic. It fed her anxiety like oil to a fire, but the people here treated her much better, and as Seol learned as she was growing up, it was not her place to ask questions. Nonetheless, her habits from the orphanage stayed. At first, it was odd that they fed her at regular intervals, so she didn't eat, firstly unaccustomed to the regular food hours and secondly unaccustomed to eating such "large" portions. It made her sick and she lost weight rapidly, which explains her relatively low weight in relation to her height. During this time, she also began to experience an unexplainable bout of homesickness. You'd think Seol felt homesick for her former home, but the funny thing was that Seol never liked the orphanage. She didn't like the institution either. She just felt homesick, but for where? Where did she even belong? How do you cure homesickness when you don't feel as if any place at all is home? The feeling affected her day-to-day life, and at one point, the scientists became aware and increasingly concerned with her well-being. Compared to the other test subjects, Seol was quite unsocial, unnervingly docile, and seemed quite depressed, but she did well during classes and training because she liked to seek approval from her teachers and she was good at following orders, so they left her alone. Worried about the fragility of her mental state however, the scientists had decided to withhold the news about the flu outbreak from her until further notice.

In 2013, just before Seol turned 20, the scientists gathered the 24 test subjects, and Seol who often becomes jittery around large groups of people, did not fare too well during formal introductions. She'd met them all once before, but due to her unsocial nature, she was close to none of them. Something was off about this meeting however, and when the scientists asked them to finally formally introduce themselves to each other as a complete group, she felt like it was because something big was about to happen. Nonetheless, she stuttered her way through her own name with her heart thumping so loud against her ribcage she wondered if the others could hear it. She felt stupid afterwards. The others had done it with ease, but she had done it with such difficulty. Why? She felt frustrated with herself, incompetent. Stupid, stupid. Drowning herself in her own feelings was put on hold however, when she and the other test subjects were led into pods. As the lids to the pods closed, Seol felt something akin to suffocating and her breathing became laboured. Before she had the chance to beg the scientist beyond the glass monitoring her pod to please let her out, something plunged deep into her neck, then her arms, and finally, her thighs. The injections came in quick successions, as did the pain. The pain was so mind-numbing and so excrutiatingly painful, it blackened her vision and brought her to the point of unconsciousness. The screaming tore raw, but just as fast as it had started, it stopped. All emerged from their respective pods moments later, none looking different, but each feeling as if there was something different running through their veins.

She was introduced to her partner a little later. Byun Baekhyun was his name. Seol felt a little sorry that he had to be stuck with someone like her, but he had surprised her in ways she'd never imagined. Upon their first formal meeting, Baekhyun had called her pretty so forwardly she was taken aback. Feeling surprised, she had smiled. Just a little bit. It didn't last long however, because when the scientist responsible for the two of them began to explain the purposes and duties of each pair, her smile dropped as fast as a hot potato. She was mortified to learn that they were expected to be physically intimate. He had laughed at her, and for a moment, her self-esteem had nearly dropped to subzero, but then he put one arm around her, pulled her closer, and said "I'll take care of you".

For the next fourteen days of training, Baekhyun made sure Seol stayed near him, despite her constant urge to step away from anyone and everyone. She wondered why he was so protective. She found out why at the end of their fourteen days when they were sent out to Bucheon. She was now well informed of the flu, but hearing it from the scientists and actually seeing the catastrophe before her own eyes was terrifyingly different. Alone, she would've let her anxiety consume her, but with Baekhyun next to her reminding her to breathe and to remember what they'd learned in training, they were successful in their mission, all returning to the institution only ten days later. It was also during this time that Baekhyun had first picked up the habit of calling her sunshine. It was in the midst of her laboured anxiety-filled breathing that Baekhyun had knelt down next to her in the middle of a disease-infested Bucheon with a cheeky smile totally inappropriate for the situation they were in and whispered it repeatedly in her ear with words of encouragement. At first, Seol hadn't realized he was referring to her at all. She wondered through the haze in her mind if 'sunshine' was supposed to be code for something, but once he began yelling sunshine across the village later on as if calling out for someone, she would catch his eye and that same cheeky grin aimed directly at her over and over again, making her cheeks flare with embarassement. Oh, She remembered thinking. It's a nickname.

It was an entire year before anything came up again. During this time, Baekhyun had built up Seol's confidence so fast it had scientists reeling back, wondering if this was the same girl that used to walk through the hallways with her hands tucked into her chest and her head down. Baekhyun was incredibly sweet, and she grew very close to her partner quickly, but towards others, she was still painfully shy and self-conscious despite her having spent a considerably increased amount of time with the others since Baekhyun was quite social and friendly, urging Seol to accompany him whenever he wanted to play around with his friends. Her stuttering improved immensely, and the scientists who once viewed her as the weakest link among the test subjects began to see how strong she became when together with her partner.

In October, nearly a year after the Bucheon mission, Baekhyun began showing strange signs of a new ability. It first appeared on a regular night, as the two lay in bed, curled up into each other. Both were already fast asleep, but similar to the way the light in the morning awakens people, Seol was awoken by the presence of something bright burning its way through her closed eyelids. When she opened her eyes, she saw tiny glowing orbs of light floating throughout the room. She grew alarmed, but the light was peaceful, simply floating there like stars illuminating a dark night. It happened again the next night. The following night after that, Seol developed the same mutation, but this time, it was Baekhyun's turn to wake up to it. It seemed as if their bodies rejected darkness, producing orbs of light to counter it.

With time, their light power increased in destructibility. Beautiful, peaceful orbs of light eventually turned into powerful zaps of flying light energy that inflicted pain or destruction upon contact. When angry, the light that the two of them unintentionally produced was enough to blind someone permanently. With more training, the two also found they could manipulate light particles and block light from entering someone's eyes if they wished to, rendering them temporarily unable to see. The unpredictability of their powers, combined with 22 others who also had uncontrollable powers of their own eventually became too much for the scientists, and they became individually confined until they could understand more about what was going on. Seol became forcefully separated from Baekhyun for the first time in a year, and scientists who became confident in her improved mental state were surprised to find she was unable to cope with the separation. At first, she was okay, simply sitting in her new room wondering when she was going to be let out. But after the next five days of absolutely nothing, her anxiety increased until she was having panic attacks by the end of the week, having to constantly remind herself to keep breathing. It was a long time before she saw Baekhyun again.

It was many months later that the head scientist came looking for her in the dead of night, telling her as well as the others that the government had decided that the subjects were too much of a threat. The implication had been clear. They were all going to die, but then he had promised right afterwards that there was no way the government was going to kill them. Seol was quickly and quietly informed of the escape plan; that on a certain day at a certain time, she was going to have to unleash the full extent of her powers to escape the institution. Once out, keep running and don't look back.

On D-Day, everything was an absolute catastrophe. The walls of the institution were torn down and set aflame, scientists were armed and screaming. Seol could barely hear herself think among the noise and wreckage, but she was very clear of her goal. She specifically, was told by the head scientist not to stray off and look for Baekhyun due to her already anxious and unstable state of mind, and that Baekhyun would find her instead. Her only goal was to get to the aircraft safely. She had done so immediately, but it had taken everything in her not to turn around and look for her other half. Baekhyun, despite being injured in the shoulder, reunited safely with her soon afterwards. Neither of them had seen Kris nor Luhan being taken down or Yuna and Haeri being taken away, but were there to witness Dani and Kyungsoo as they struggled to board the plane. When Jongin made the decision to push Kyungsoo off, Seol swore her heart stopped. Despite the plane shaking dangerously as it ascended, she grew hysterical, in the midst of wanting to murder Jongin as well as having a full-blown panic attack that disrupted her breathing severely. As her feelings intensified, light began to glow around her, growing brighter very quickly and threatening to blind everyone on the plane for life, so she was quickly knocked unconscious by Yixing. Baekhyun held her throughout the plane ride as they flew from their home at the institution and into the unknown.

Personality Traits –
+ compassionate, good-natured, hardworking, resilient
- aimless, anxious, dependent, weak-willed

Personality
— Seol is very aware of her own weaknesses and is very self-critical, constantly viewing herself as an entity in relation to others. She constantly fails to label herself as "I", but instead, as Baekhyun's partner, as Minseok's friend, or as the Head Scientist's subject. Due to her less-than-impressive childhood, Seol grew up to be very dependent on the people around her to take care of her. For example, if not given food, she will not seek it. Conversely, she is extremely docile and efficient at following orders and instructions, much to the pleasure of the scientists. The trust she has in others is immense, yet at the same time, she tends to shy away from the presence of other people, afraid of judgement and disapproval when left to make her own decisions. Of course, that does not mean Seol cannot tell right from wrong. Though submissive and obedient, she is in no way lacking in intelligence and common sense despite the fact that she often becomes prisoner to her anxiety.

— Seol is painfully shy and difficult to spot outside of her room, but if successfully approached, will try hard to respond appropriately and hold a conversation, partly as an attempt to be a decent human being and partly due to her fear of being seen as otherwise. Despite her motivation usually driven by fear, she does try hard to be friendly if approached. Seol does not have a mean bone in her body and even if you paid her, she wouldn't dare say anything that would ever hurt somebody else. If someone said something mean to her however, she'd just take it. No retorts. No rebuttals. Nothing. She's unable to speak up against anyone - an annoyingly persistent trait of her's.

— Seol being very good at following instructions reveals something else about her as well - her inability to develop personal goals for herself. Everything she does revolves around other people, and this is a quality that usually infuriates self-confident and goal-driven people. Seol is rather aimless and weak-willed, not because she lacks character, but because this was how she was taught at the orphanage; that her feelings are invalid and unimportant and therefore, should be disregarded. Ironically, she is very in-tune to the feelings of other people, especially when they regard herself. In fact, she is usually so concerned with this that it's all she can think about sometimes.

— Despite her flaws, Seol is an extremely genuine person, a trait that's very hard to go by nowadays. If she worries about you, it's because she's actually genuinely really worried about
you; not about saving her own , but you. Especially if you are Korean, 174cm tall, and possess blood type O with the name Byun Baekhyun.

(Oh god, I'm so sorry. I think the history and bond section says more about Seol's habits and personality traits than I could describe here...!)

Bonds
— Kim Minseok (김민석) | Friends | When dragged to hangouts with her partner, Minseok always feels bad for how out of place Seol looks and probably feels, so while Baekhyun is messing with someone else, he always goes over to make small talk with her, not really minding her little stutters sometimes. Minseok likes listening to her attempts at holding a conversation. He thinks the effort she puts into it is cute. After figuring out he wasn't going to laugh at her, Seol discovered she quite liked his companionship.

— Kim Dani (김다니) | Friends | Dani and Baekhyun hang out with each other quite often, so naturally Seol became acquainted with her as well. Dani finds Seol a very patient listener, and enjoys talking about her curiosity of the outside world with her.

Things to Note –
— Subject has a mild speech impediment; did not improve much despite therapy; improvements were observed after subject was introduced to partner
— Subject appears to have separation anxiety when partner is withdrawn

Current Condition
"This is it, Sunshine. We're out of there. We're not going to run anymore, we're going to build a life here, okay? Don't cry, don't cry."

Those were the first words Seol heard when she gained consciousness after the escape flight - promises of a bright future together and the possibility of a stable life. The only feeling she could describe right then and there was the feeling of relief. She felt relieved beyond compare. Then came the pain of losing five. It tore through her like a wrecking ball a truck slamming into the brittle bones of a little child. But life goes on, time doesn't wait for anyone, and eventually, they learned to move on. Since then, the two of them have been hopping from country to country (using the head scientist's generously offered money) in search of the perfect place to live out the rest of their lives. They've been to Beijing, Germany, Vancouver, Los Angeles, and Tokyo. Currently, the two are in Lyon, France, and it seems Baekhyun is reluctant to leave.

"I want a little cottage house like that one!"
"Ah, don't point. The house owners are staring."
"Let them stare! I'll buy out their house! They should look at my face while they're still here."
"Shhhhhh! They can hear-"
"I want five kids."
"...... Sorry, what?"
"And a dog."
"Wait."

Although Baekhyun and Seol are now off on their own, they do keep in contact with the other pairs and have visited each of them at least once on their journey. Dani however, they've visited thrice in Colorado. Despite their frequent trips, they do plan to settle down soon and perhaps in the far future, get married and start a family once they've healed their broken souls from the loss of their comrades. Or, at least that's what Baekhyun has led Seol to believe.

What she doesn't know is that Baekhyun has hidden plans; something that he plans to do without her. While Baekhyun loves Seol to the moon and back, Dani has always been his best friend, and ever since he started his country-hopping journey with Seol, the guilt has been eating him alive. While he gets to play tourist and sight-see wherever his heart desires, it doesn't change the fact that his best friend is bed-ridden in Colorado, sick with longing for her other half while he has the opportunity to settle down with his own. The situation just doesn't sit right with him. He needs to get Kyungsoo back from the institution, and very soon.

He would never bring Seol back to that hellhole though, not in a billion years. So behind her back, Baekhyun has been making phone calls to the head scientist, begging him to find a way to keep Seol alive while he's gone, and also begging him to find a way to separate their connection like he's trying to do with Dani in case he doesn't return. The head scientist is torn between his love for Seol and her safety, his love for Kyungsoo and the desire to see him return, and his love for Baekhyun who is willing to walk into hellfire for his friends.

In the end though, Baekhyun doesn't get to go back to the institution and the head scientist doesn't get to make any decisions because it turns out, they don't have to go to Kyungsoo, Kyungsoo is coming for them.

Bond
Before Baekhyun and Seol had been formally introduced and paired together, Seol already had a reputation among the scientists of the institution. They called her 'weakling' and instead of using her name, they constantly referred to her as such but of course, never in her presence. When Baekhyun and Seol were officially introduced, what Baekhyun felt at first was disappointment at having been paired up with someone so weak and undesirable, but when he looked up at Seol's face for the first time, he was shocked to see that she already thought the same thing of herself. Very much so. It was very clear on her face, that she was terribly sorry that he had to be stuck with someone like her. He'd felt a pang in his chest then. It was pity. No, no, no , he had thought. Don't look so sad. So he blurted out the first thing that came to mind. "You're very pretty," he'd told her. The way her eyes lit up was something he'd never forget.

Not long after, he decided to make it his personal goal to see her eyes light up like that at least once a day. At first, he was concentrated on his goal, having to consciously put in effort at the right times to make Seol smile. She was painfully shy and constantly wandered off to isolated areas, but he kept chasing her so he could meet his quota for the day. Eventually, the conscious effort he had to put into his goal diminished until he found himself subconsciously doing things that would make her happy. For example, when Baekhyun first discovered she liked apples, he had to keep reminding himself to pick up an extra apple at lunch to give to Seol. Half the time he'd forget until he had to resort to writing it in his forearm with a bright red marker so he'd remember. Eventually, it came natural to him. Nowadays, he doesn't even remember picking up the fruit anymore. It somehow just magically appears on his tray and sometimes, he'll be in the middle of telling someone a joke before he realizes he's not even eating his own food and that his hands happen to be peeling an apple instead because Seol doesn't like the skin.

To Seol, Baekhyun seems to know what he's doing all the time. He forwardly calls her beautiful, or that her outfit looks pretty today, going even as far as to call her sunshine at Bucheon like it was nothing; like he was simply commenting on the nice weather. It sent butterflies fluttering through her stomach everytime and she was almost sure he knew. Cheeky Baekhyun will always be cheeky Baekhyun. But despite his evidently playful side, he is serious when he needs to be, always seemingly in-tune with his partner's location, working hard to keep her close during their Bucheon mission and even going out of his way to make sure the infected don't come within a 15ft radius of her in all directions. Even during their pre-Bucheon training, Baekhyun kept his eye on the instructor, ready to karate chop his hands right off of Seol if he happened to hit her too hard or even scratch her during their hand-to-hand combat practice. If you look up the word 'protective' in the dictionary, you might find a picture of Baekhyun's face there. Needless to say, Seol didn't improve very much in her physical training.

In regards to the physical intimacy they were required to engage in, Baekhyun and Seol were probably the very last pair to even remember they had to. With Seol constantly succumbing to her anxiety and Baekhyun constantly trying to figure out better ways to take care of her, physical intimacy was the last thing on their minds. But although physical intimacy is the most efficient way of gaining strength, it isn't the only way. Physically, the two eventually got into the habit of holding hands and it was so routine that it felt weird for the both of them not to be holding onto each other. They also fall asleep together at night, and with Baekhyun being such a fussy sleeper, they always find themselves tangled with each other in the morning. One time, Baekhyun had been so excited at finally winning a poker game against Dani that he had spun around to pull Seol into a kiss before his brain could even register what he was doing. Seol had been so embarassed she fled the room, but later on in the day when they had combat practice, she punched the sandbag so hard in her excitement that it flew off its chain. In that instant, everyone knew something had happened between her and Baekhyun for Seol to suddenly get so strong. The instructor had laughed for so long, Seol hid her reddening face in her hands, completely missing the grin on Baekhyun's face.

It isn't very clear to either of them at exactly what point they fell in love, but their love was so powerful it was unspoken but already understood that both desired to spend the rest of their lives with the other, not just because they had to due to the sharing of one life source, but because somewhere along the way, their lives had become so irrevocably intertwined that they couldn't be separated.

Notes
— I absolutely love the way you incorporated the teasers!! They were so confusing to me when I first watched them and I've read so many theories about them, but after reading the details of this apply fic and going back to rewatch the teasers, I almost couldn't believe you haven't been hired by sm to make a movie or something. This is so, so, so creative, ahhhh!! Also, thank you for taking the time to read my app c: I had a really fun time writing all of this!! Let me know if I need to change anything!
Improvement plans
— I really hope I didn't make Seol too useless of a character or too mary-sue !! I do recognize that she's a very dependent and submissive character though, so I think it'd be really cool (if she was selected at all) if she eventually stands up for something and breaks through her comfort zone to protect something or someone she loves c: Not necessarily Baekhyun
