History For as long as long as Niu can remember, she has had two homes. From the time she was born to the time she turned nine, she had lived in a too-small orphanage in South Korea where she shared a room with at least four other girls with clearly not enough food for all of them to have a proper meal. She would feel obligated to give most of her meals to those younger than her and give up most of her space so the others around her were more comfortable than she, resulting in her becoming used to the idea of cramped spaces with little to no privacy. She knew she wasn't the oldest, but as she grew older, she felt the need to follow the other older kids' actions, trying to help out wherever she could. She had been impressionable at her young age, and the caretakers selfishly thought that was good for them, influencing her to help them out whenever they started to get tired. She would do simple things like preparing bowls of rice or cleaning the beds and picking up old, stray toys from the floor, and she wouldn't complain. She thought it meant she was becoming special to them like the older kids they entrusted to help take care of the new, little children who were dropped off at the orphanage.

This continued on until the officials from the Institute came to their small orphanage one day after she turned nine, observing all of them until they pointed her out. When asked what her name was, she responded that her name was Niu. Niu herself always thought that was her true name, but when the officials looked at her oddly with the name sounding like 'new' and not really sounding Korean at all, the caretakers said that Niu strangely came to their orphanage as an infant with only the smudged last name Zhou present on her person with an even more smudged first name that wasn't legible at all. She was given the name Niu because it basically translates to 'little girl' in Chinese and it seemed appropriate at the time, given that she was, then, the youngest at the orphanage. They also gave her that name because that was one of the only Chinese words they knew at the time. Niu had no idea about that until then, not knowing she was actually truly different from all the other orphans and even dropped off in a different country, but she felt a little heartbroken hearing that her name really wasn't anything special and was actually just a generalized term for people everywhere in China. She even grew up thinking she was Korean as well.

Because of this, she felt that it was okay to go with these random people since she wasn't anything special to the caretakers at the orphanage at all. She was starting to see that she shouldn't have gotten her hopes high in such a cramped, overused space. It was like a wakeup call for the still young girl that she should think more of herself and think things through instead of quickly going through the motions of helping others out, instead asking numerous questions before or even while she helps others out. While being transported to the Institute, Niu was starting to become cautious, a nervous wreck, because she realized she just left the only home and people she knew to go somewhere completely foreign with people she didn't know at all whatsoever. What if they were going to treat her differently because she wasn't Korean like she originally thought?

After her arrival to the Institute, she was greeted by other children around her age, or rather, she was greeted by the sight of other children her age. Most of them were all quiet when they first saw each other, but those who did openly greet others surprised Niu with how friendly they were towards her. One of these children was Jongdae who simply said 'hi!' while another was Yifan who quietly greeted her as well when she looked confused to what Jongdae had told her. These were the two people she first met in her new home and these were the two who made the deepest impressions on her first even though her and Jongdae never really spoke much again after the initial greetings because of her confused facial expression towards him. She became closer to Yifan first, learning that they were both actually Chinese, before becoming close to Yixing as well who seemed to stick around Yifan ( and Lu Han other times ) more.

She received the usual lessons as everyone else, taking Chinese for her ethnic background before learning the basics in English later on when she grew older. She even began thinking of the Institute as a level up from the orphanage, except that she didn't like being in a room all by herself. She became so used to sharing a room with so many other people that now having a room to herself made it seem extremely large in comparison to her. Nobody knew where they came from before their past orphanages when she asked, becoming curious as to how they all lived before they were moved there, and nobody knew why they were there other than the possibility that they were being taught or trained for something great later in life. But Niu knew better and tried not to get her hopes up again that they were all special in some way or form.

It wasn't until one random day after Niu turned twenty-two that all twenty-four of them were called into some lab none of them had ever been in before. They were mostly cautious, looking around confused and amazed especially when they saw twenty-four pods in there, when Niu felt Yifan suddenly come up next to her to hold her hand. When she looked at him, she noticed his extremely cautious expression, staring at everything around them intensely until they were all told to separate and get in each of their pods. Some of them were hesitant, like Yifan who wouldn't let go of her hand, but there were others like Niu who simply went along with it slowly becoming curious about it. The Institute never truly harmed them since any of them had been there, and even if they were to start now, it was clear that they weren't intent on getting anybody to replace them. They would've done so by now, at least that's what Niu thought after spending so many years thinking that they weren't going to be anything special.

Niu never expected to be injected by some blue liquid into her arms, thighs, and even her neck. At first, all she felt was a weird sensation of a soothing burn running through her veins, but as the seconds ticked by, so did the intensity of the burn. She ended up screaming, her body stiffening as she tried hard not to thrash around inside the pod. She, and even the head scientist, didn't expect her to pass out by the end of it, the burn still engulfing her whole.

When she woke up shortly after the experiment finished, she was surprised to see Jongdae, the man she hadn't really talked much to since their first meeting, leaning over her and staring down at her worriedly. He was the one ( along with Yifan and Yixing ) who thought she'd make it, unlike the scientist who thought she was losing the battle, but she was the last to wake. The scientist explained everything to her and it surprised her to know that Jongdae was her partner. Of course while growing up, she thought Jongdae was one of the more handsome boys at the orphanage, but she never thought of it anything more than that. She was pleasantly surprised though to find out that they would now be sharing a room together, only because it'd finally help ease the unsettling feeling in her stomach when she had been sleeping alone for the past thirteen years.

It wasn't long until they were thrown out into Bucheon, sent to kill those Infected. Niu was surprised that the quick training they got for two weeks plus the experimentation actually helped them a lot, quickly killing who they needed to kill and protecting those they needed to protect. She didn't appreciate the fact they also had to clean up what the Institute wanted them to kill but she actually handled ( and somewhat enjoyed ) killing those Infected instead. She didn't know any of the Infected personally, so she didn't take it personally herself. Before long, they were sent back to the Institute after completing their mission. She even started to think they were all truly indeed special to the Institute because of all the trials they've been through.

After almost a year passed, all the pairs started to experience different things. For Niu and Jongdae, it happened in their sleep. They couldn't feel it, but when they woke up with Niu cuddled up to Jongdae, they noticed there were small black, spider-like veins or marks on Jongdae's neck and Niu's waist around her right hip. They didn't understand what it was at first but when they looked around themselves on the bed, they noticed their sheets were burnt to a crisp. They didn't say anything about it at first ( or rather really couldn't, because they weren't awake to witness or experience it when asked ) but when they woke up the next few days with more marks on their bodies, this time an irritated and burning red, they immediately became concerned. Niu went to Yifan and Yixing about it, hearing that the other pairs were slowly starting to develop abnormal abilities when Yixing grabbed her hand where the recent marks made it on her wrists and hands and they were both surprised to see his own power starting to show up again, watching as it healed the broken areas without his control.

It was after this that they were all eventually confined into separate rooms again and Niu became anxious and agitated, finally feeling sparks of electricity running all over her body just like that blue liquid at her jumpy behavior. After spending months with Jongdae in the same room, it felt weird and lonely being in a room by herself. She went back to thinking that the room was too large for a small person like her, and it was noticeable with her jittery behavior. She couldn't even tell how Jongdae was feeling but knowing he was probably thrashing about, always more emotional of the two, and she couldn't help but want to reassure him she was mostly fine.

Suddenly, she learned from the head scientist that the government were afraid of them and wanted to dispose of them before anything worsened. She was shocked, and it clearly showed when the head scientist let out a little yelp when she accidentally shocked him. In no time, all twenty-four of them were escaping, Niu making sure to stick close to those she was closest to with Jongdae right next to her. She assumed their bond progressed faster than the others simply because they were always touching when they were together and because they could release strong bolts of lightning to those attacking them. They tried their hardest to avoid hurting those they were friends with but they couldn't help accidentally shocking a few of their friends in the process. Yifan was yelling at both Jongdae and Niu to run and hurry up to the aircraft, telling them they could use their powers from a long distance to help the rest of them, but before they could understand it, Yifan was shot down first, followed by Lu Han.

Niu immediately stopped in her tracks, eyes wide as she saw the two struggling to keep moving before she tried to run to them to help them up. She immediately shocked anybody who touched her, trying very hard not to hurt Yifan any more than he was injured, but she cried out when she was pulled and pushed away from him - Yifan pushing her away while Jongdae pulled her up and kept dragging her to the aircraft. Niu felt numb, hearing crashes of thunder and lightning in her ears as she watched Yifan die before looking over to see Lu Han dying as well, their own partners thrashing about because they couldn't just be left there. Niu couldn't help but watch as Kyungsoo was pushed out of the plane as well, looking over to Jongdae immediately and pulling him in closer.

Personality Traits –
( + ) introverted, humorous, protective, perceptive
( – ) inquisitive, tactless, persistent, self-conscious
Personality
— Niu had always been an introverted person, initially quiet at first and observing everything around her to get a better understanding of her surroundings. She liked to look at everything around her with a curiosity she naturally started to develop as a child. Because of this, she has become increasingly perceptive to her surroundings as she aged each year. She would be able to notice the littlest change in a person's behavior after knowing them for a while or in the environment around her and she would become curious about it. She would always stare at the person or object in question until someone notices or she would just flat-out ask about it, although trying to do so in a gentle way so as not to scare the other person off or offend them. She had been told before by Yifan that she lacked tact in asking certain personal questions seeming as to how she would ask it bluntly, eg. "do you remember your parents? was your orphanage bad? is that why you're so loud or something?" so she has been working on being gentler and more sensitive with her questions and the way she acts.

Just as Niu can be quiet and perceptive though, she can also be quite humorous when she's not accidentally offending others, loving to laugh with her friends in the Institute whenever they were given little breaks. She would like to joke around and bring about a light atmosphere around her, Yifan, and Yixing when she thought it was appropriate ( even though it wasn't at other times since she still lacked tact for it ), thinking they all needed it living in a different country with other people who couldn't understand their language. Even after the escape, she would love to make jokes with Jongdae and laugh with him, thinking it made their bond grow stronger with each peal of laughter spilled from their lips. Sometimes, she wouldn't need to say anything at all and just her quirky behavior with her speech and mannerisms with her hand gestures along with Jongdae's jokes would be enough to make them laugh.

Given her age compared to Jongdae's, Niu also becomes increasingly protective during the Flu outbreak and onwards, believing it's in her older age to protect someone younger than her, especially with those she cares about. She'll be willing to sacrifice herself for anybody she has grown to appreciate and love even though it would mean Jongdae would eventually die too. She would even stupidly give up her life for Jongdae, if the circumstances allowed her to without him dying in the end as well. She can become just as persistent about it as well. Sometimes her and Jongdae would even argue about who is more protective of the other after Niu accidentally brings it up without thinking within the Institute after the Flu outbreak's successful mission and after their escape. Despite her willingness to protect Jongdae though, she does become insecure in her actual abilities, wondering if it's enough to be special towards him. Her inquisitive trait goes so far as to question herself and become self-conscious and, given her background, she wonders and hopes she's special to Jongdae even if they weren't supposed to be paired together in the first place.

Bonds –
— Wu Yifan | best friends | He was one of the first people to introduce himself to Niu besides Jongdae. They're both quite introverted but their personalities mesh well together. He quickly becomes protective of Niu and even Yixing and others who are better friends with them in the Institute could never figure out if it was something more than a platonic friendship between them ( to Niu it was platonic, unknown for Yifan ). Of course, Niu was devastated as she watched her best friend die in front of her, but she wanted to believe he was happier now and didn't want her to grieve forever.
— Seo Haeri ( Yifan's partner ) | friendly acquaintances | Ever since they were all paired up, Niu tried to become friends with Yifan's partner but for some reason, it was hard to be on completely good terms with her. They were just awkward together whenever they talked to each other.
— Zhang Yixing | close friends | He's the third person to greet her in the Institute. They both have the same quirky behavior where they can make others laugh without meaning to and they liked to think of each other as brother and sister. Even after the escape, Niu worries about Yixing and his partner, hoping they're doing well wherever they are ( later finding out through Jongin that they're in China and Niu believes Yixing is completely fine in his home country ).
— Yixing's partner | friends | Because Niu thinks of Yixing as her brother, she likes to think of his partner as her sister and likes to treat her as such.
— ( after applicants are chosen, maybe Jongdae's best friend or one of his friends as one of her own friends as well whether it's another member or applicant? )

Things to Note –
— Subject is known to be 'quirky' simply because she can make others laugh with or without meaning to by her mannerisms with the way she talks and moves her hands about while speaking.
— Subject is not known to have as many nightmares as she thought she would have, she definitely has less than Jongdae.
— Subject is not very fond of complete darkness and would cling to her partner during the night.
— Subject is known to love little cakes, mocha-flavored especially.
— Subject is known to have a weakness for Jongdae's smile and laughter.
— Subject is known to love the history of anything she can find and research upon.
— Subject feels no rush to initiate if she or her partner doesn't feel it's the right moment or time, if they don't feel some kind of spark or increase in romantic feelings between each other.
— Subject quietly takes pride in her heightened sense of hearing.
— Subject has shown to somewhat have better control over her power of lightning than Jongdae whose power reflects his emotional state.
— Subject has seen an increase in power over her electricity at night when it's dark.
— Subject is known to look up to the skies when lightning and storms strike because of its beauty and feeling a connection with it.

Current Condition After they escape, Jongdae and Niu are dropped off near the Alatau foothills about an hour away from Almaty, Kazakhstan, simply so they wouldn't be easily caught since Almaty is a growing tourist spot and city. They weren't given much in terms of finances and clothing but when they wandered through the foothills speaking limited English, they were able to find a nomad family who actually taught the pair how to build a yurt and herd sheep. The nomad family definitely looked at them strangely, both of them seeming to come out from nowhere wearing odd clothes, but they welcomed them as tourists and taught them how to do these things like they do with others passing by the area. It wasn't until what felt like a couple months ( actually a couple of or a few weeks ) later after they were able to make the littlest amount of money selling wool and even selling whatever decorations they accumulated for their yurt from other families and tourists ( where Jongdae sang whatever he could learn for the tourists and earned tips ) to take a taxi to the city of Almaty.

With the limited amount of money they managed to save up plus the clothes they were able to make and receive from other nomad families, they found a rundown building and managed to convince the janitor who tried to keep the place clean to allow them to stay there. They knew they couldn't exactly keep living in such a rundown place with sheep's wool as a makeshift for a bed as well as keep the few things like clothes and necessities needed to basically live, so after they talked it over, especially since it was still cold in Almaty, they decided to try and find jobs within museums since Jongdae had an affinity for learning news things and even started collecting old books at reasonable prices. Niu had no problems at first, obtaining the job of being a preparator for exhibits after showcasing what abilities she had, while Jongdae got a job after her simply being a museum registrar since they were still very extremely limited in speaking Russian but could slowly start to read and understand it a bit easier as time passed by.

Every now and then, they would return to the foothills to visit the nomad families who helped them in their time of need and would create new things for themselves, becoming handy in the ways of making blankets and clothes. Others would have thought that Niu would be devastated after she witnessed her best friend's death and leaving the only 'home' she knew, but she knew that life went on and that she knew there were others suffering worse than her, especially Dani, and compared to Jongdae, she was holding up fine on her own. She would have her moments where she would get lost in thought and grieve for her friend, but she made sure to quickly recover from it, not wanting Jongdae to worry about her. It doesn't happen some days though, and when she can't bring herself out of it, she seeks comfort from Jongdae's smile, laughter, and his embarce, finding things to talk about to help distract her from the sad memories.

However, Jongdae seemed to be taking everything a bit worse than Niu because he thought of those in the Institute like his makeshift family ( now pretty much destroyed ) and she could never figure it out despite the softer smiles when he was feeling down and how he would space out every now and then. Of course, they still couldn't control their powers any better and he would sometimes send out little lightning bolts around them because of his emotional state, but she would always try to cancel it out with her own if she could manage to successfully send a bolt of her own out. She thinks it's why he's so fascinated with trying to read as many books as he can on the rooftop of the rundown building where they live, ranging from overdoses ( because he's pretty sure they were overdosed from whatever blue liquid that was that gave them unnatural abilities ) to fantasy novels hoping to figure out what to do with their powers.

Bond Before they were made to be each other's pairing, Niu and Jongdae had a simple relationship where they would talk if they passed by each other and if they needed to after their first meeting as children. Niu always thought Jongdae was a friendly person, with how his lips always seemed to be turned up at the corners making it look like he was always smiling even when he was annoyed or angry, and Jongdae always thought Niu was the same age as him or younger with how she actually acted when she warmed up to someone. To them, it made talking to each other a lot easier than they thought it would ever be. But with how Niu always stuck close to Yifan and Yixing, their acquaintance relationship never really progressed past that initially.

Niu always found something to admire in Jongdae from the way he always seemed bright and friendly with those he constantly talked to. She looked up to him in terms of persistence and attitude and always felt the need to make the first move and care more actively for him because she's older than him. But when they inevitably became closer and started sharing a room together, she would find herself being led around by him simply because of how more 'active' he is. She definitely didn't mind any intimate touches ( either started by him or her ) and actually relished in it whenever they would sleep at night and he'd pull her to him or she'd push herself up against him to become more comfortable. During their time in the Institute however, they never truly did have until after they escaped. They felt like there was never an appropriate time with the appropriate amount of romantic feelings while they were in the Institute.

For Jongdae, he thought it was truly odd there was a full female Chinese-born orphan with them in the Institute but he also thought it was interesting enough. He was always fascinated by her in every which way from the way she carried herself to the way she acted around Yifan and Yixing. Even though he's younger than her by a year, he felt like it has been his duty to protect her from anything harmful that may come their way. He would actively touch her and physically protect her with his body any chance needed and he would try to initiate hugs and friendly touches, like touching her cheek or grabbing her hand, whenever he could inside or outside their room. He was always a cuddly type of person, and it clearly showed when they were alone in their room and even after the escape. ( He would try not to cuddle up too much to her outside their room in the Institute and tried to limit his touches to lingering gazes and fleeting touches. )

During the Flu mission, it was obvious they were worried for each other but tried not to show it. They wanted to be there for each other so they both thought they were being strong by not showing it. Niu was older and she assumed it was her responsibility to check and be the wall for Jongdae, but since Jongdae was the man, he assumed it was his responsibility to be her wall to lean on. They always tried to beat each other into doing the more dangerous work but in the end, they found a comfortable pattern and rhythm with trying to alternate every few kills and cleaning up. It was after this successful mission that they celebrated with a kiss inside their room, although they were kisses to the cheeks and neck because they suddenly became bashful trying to actually kiss each other on the lips in broad daylight ( they didn't think kisses to the neck were intimate when they cuddled each other as they slept ). They also clearly became more affectionate afterwards in and out of their room.

The whole time from when they were first dropped off near the foothills to when they finally made the move to Almaty, they believed they had to rely on each other more to survive, seeing as how they actually saw their comrades and friends die in front of their eyes on the escape out and in the plane. They would joke around and flirt, always trying to keep the atmosphere light around them ( figuratively, they didn't want to actually release lightning bolts everywhere ), even though at other times they would be arguing about something that would make them unconsciously release bolts of lightning, almost getting caught by the janitor once. Surprisingly though, Jongdae would be the one to lose control of his lightning abilities more quickly than Niu. In their sleep, he would see his friends being shot down and dying and would imagine Niu being the same way if he didn't pull her away from Yifan in time. He would always wake up with Niu trying to shake him awake, trying to counter his lightning with her own so that black marks wouldn't appear on her body again like that first time they discovered their powers in the Institute.

Over time, it even got to the point where Niu couldn't wake him up simply by shaking and calling him awake. This time, she had felt the only way to get to him without black marks appearing all over his body was to kiss him awake, and when she did, she wanted to laugh at the immediate spark that ran through her body, watching with her eyes open as Jongdae's own flew open and he practically breathed her in. When she saw he was awake and with her, she pulled away laughing, feeling tingles of electricity running throughout her body and laughing even more when Jongdae just stared at her confused before laughing himself and pulling her closer to him and rolling on top of her, saying "tell me you felt that spark too." Sure, they've had their fair share of kisses before and even made out, but it wasn't until then that they actually felt that literal spark between them that they thought their relationship actually escalated more than they'd expected despite the struggles they've went through. To say they spent the night making out was an understatement. They were fascinated with that spark that when Jongdae managed to kiss the black marks on Niu's hips and Niu kissed the ones on his neck, the marks glowed a faint blue color ( before the glow eventually disappeared, they felt tingles of electricity flow through them but nothing hurt ) that it replaced the bad memories of the blue liquid filling their bodies with their love instead.

Primary Appearance yoon sunyoung
Secondary Appearance jeon minju

Notes the lightning scars that first appear are based off of this, the scars are black because of the high voltage they exhibited during the night. it was also inspired off of a fanart i saw in tumblr if you would like the link too to see what i'm imagining ( it's here but not to that extent, he tries and wears scarves or turtlenecks as much as possible because of the scar on his neck )? omg and i feel like everything is lacking but i actually did some research for almaty and what could possibly be done in the surrounding areas, i hope everything just makes sense ;;; i may add more trivia though as time passes by and the story starts and she's chosen? ;; she's also full chinese so i hope that's okay since china line were taken too so ;u;
Improvement plans
— Niu and Jongdae walking through a lightning storm and thinking of their 'family' Junmyeon and his partner while becoming amazed that they attracted every few bolts that struck the sky. ( otl, too much? )
— Jongdae reading up on overdoses and Niu finding him on the rooftop with his assortment of books ( like in his teaser ) in the rundown building they live in.
— Jongin and his partner suddenly appearing while Jongdae and Niu are arguing or acting cute and Jongin and his partner are just standing there awkwardly like 'hi there. bad timing?'
— The scene where Jongdae asks about Niu's background and she tells him why she was given her name and how she feels like it's not even personalized for her or anything, maybe that's when he gives her the name Dian Mu later on.
— i like drama ;u;
— i'll add more later when i'm not so tired ;;
