There's a Demon in All of Us

Kai watched his mother burn. She screamed in agony; she cried for help, but Kai was helpless; he gripped at his blade as his mother blew up in flames, silent tears cascading down his face. He saw a flash of movement and looked at the doorway, only to see 15 year old Sehun standing there alone.

“Mom!” cried Sehun. Kai ran to his brother and began to hug his brother as tight as he could. He could hear the heavy breathing coming from his younger brother and felt the wet drops of tears on his shoulders; he was angry. If only I had been here sooner. If only I was here. The guilt he didn’t have to carry began to consume him. He felt tired and miserable.

Kai sat there in silence; he didn’t want to cry, he always tried to live up to his “image” of being tough, but he couldn’t hold in his tears this time. I have to go, he thought.

He stood up hastily and began to pack. He took all of his necessities and threw his backpack over his shoulder. Kai heard a squeak and turned to look at Sehun.

“Where are you going now,” spoke Sehun with a soft voice.

“I’ll be right back, I promise,” whispered Kai as he ruffled Sehun's hair.

Kai left that night, promising to return within the next week. Sehun looked to the right and saw Kai's journal:

            January 20th 2007
I can’t believe it. She really is gone. I don’t know why it has to end like this. I’m scared. I’m frightened. Family is so important to me and I couldn’t even save her. Why didn’t I get there in time? Why wasn’t I there? I couldn’t help but think about what I could’ve done for her. I’m a horrible son and I felt useless, what should I do now? I’m exhausted and I can’t do this anymore. It’s time for me to go, I can’t stay here anymore, I can’t do anything, I’m ashamed of myself. Goodbye my family, I love you.

Kai didn’t keep his promise. Everyday Sehun waited and waited, he waited for the day, his brother would return. But after years and years of waiting, he couldn’t wait anymore.

Dear Kai,
I’m sorry this happened. I thought your mother would be safe. I was trying my best to protect her. I didn’t mean for this to happen at all. I just hope you know that it’s not my fault Kai. I also hope that you know it isn’t your fault either. You couldn’t have saved her either. Your job now is to protect Sehun . Come back and protect your brother Kai.

Dad

Sehun trudged towards the door and held a gun behind the door while opening it.

“Hey,” greeted Kai with a grin on his face. Sehun was in shock; he was clenching his teeth and didn’t speak. The silence was consuming them, and Sehun couldn’t handle it anymore. He sprang into action, pulling his brother into the house, kicking the door shut. In a split second, he had pulled back his arm, clenching his fists; he threw his arm forward towards Kai, knocking Kai off of his feet. He doubled over and cursed to himself. Sehun was however, relentless and kept going. Although he threw another punch, Kai quickly blocked it and countered with an upper cut towards the neck, catching Sehun off guard. He then staggered backwards and started coughing violently.

“Okay fine,” moaned Sehun, “you win.”

“I’m pretty sure I figured that out,” grimaced Kai. He was breathing heavily as he tried to catch his breath.

“Why do you show up now?” breathed Sehun, “so much for the: I’ll return within the next week crap. It’s been eight years Kai! You think I wouldn’t need you? You think I wouldn’t need the help from my dear older brother. Dad died by the way. Where were you? You should’ve been here!” roared Sehun.

            “I couldn’t come back,” Kai began, “I couldn’t even save mom. I wish I could’ve came back, I did. I wanted to, but I didn’t know if I could.”

Sehun sighed, “You couldn’t have saved her, and it wasn’t your fault. What happen during those eight years for you?”

Kai wanted to avoid the topic. He couldn’t tell Sehun all of the horrible things that he’s done. He couldn’t talk about the amount of innocent people he killed; the memory haunted him. He didn’t want to turn into the heartless killer he was during those eight years, in front of his brother. He couldn’t say anything, and so he kept his mouth shut.

Kai always knew it was family first. Family is everything to him, but things have changed throughout the years.

“Hey come on, you got to put the demon warding sigils up,” yawned Sehun, as he threw the piece of paper at Kai, “thought you might’ve forgotten the symbol,” he chuckled.

The symbol was a very basic pentagram with a few ancient letters around it. He held a knife to his skin and slowly pressed the knife against the skin, cutting it. The hand started to bleed and Kai winced at the pain. He dipped two fingers into the pool of blood and began to draw the pentagram onto the wall. Sehun watched him silently; he looked out the window and sighed. Something was definitely different.

Half a year later and nothing has changed. It was the 1st of January and Kai wouldn’t say a word in regards about the eight years previously. Although Sehun repeatedly tried, Kai would simply shake it off and change the topic.

Kai laid there in silence; he had his arms behind his head and stared up at the ceiling. Suddenly the walls began to shake and he quickly ran to get his Celestial Blade.

            “Hello, my name is Chanyeol.”

The person named Chanyeol appeared in thin air and smiled a sinister grin, he stared at them with an evil gleam in his eye.

“What are you doing here? Who are you?” questioned Sehun holding a gun towards the unknown being.

“I’m a demon obviously,” he drawled

“How did you get through the demon warding we put up?”

“It’s upside down,” he snickered, “Anyways I’m here to warn you, about the future, your mother made a deal with us before she died you know. She told us not to touch a single hair on your tiny little heads, and so we complied, but there was a catch, the deal would break after eight years. It’s been nine years since her death. I’ll be leaving now, but I can’t guarantee your safety for the next few days. There will be a lot of demons showing up at your doorstep. I’d suggest, drawing the symbol the right way. Oh and also, use purer blood next time,” he winked and disappeared. Kai let out a sigh of relief and placed the knife down. He placed a hand on his chest to try and calm his fast-beating heart.

“What did he mean by purer blood?” uttered Sehun. He held a gun, pointing it at Kai.

“It’s nothing I promise, just please draw the sigils,” muttered Kai, “Are you really going to kill your own brother Sehun? Your family?” he questioned. Sehun sighed, because Kai was right, he was family, and he couldn’t kill family. He placed the gun down and cut a slit into hand and began to draw the symbol the right way.

Three months later and they were fine. They were living like normal human beings, with the exception of the occasional monster hunting here and there. It was quiet. The silence was not awkward, but it was eerily quiet, almost too quiet for Sehun's liking. The walls began to shake again and Kai knew exactly what was going to happen. He ran to his Celestial Blade and grasped it tightly into his palm.

“Hi,” the demon said with a disgusting pool of blood dripping from his palms. The demon took his hand and lapped up the blood like a dog, “How are you kids doing?”

            “Skip the chitchat,” snarled Kai.

“You here to kill us or what?” questioned Sehun. Kai stood behind Sehun.

“No, I’m here to kill you,” whispered Kai, into Sehun's ear. He plunged the blade into Sehun's back and grinned. Sehun's lifeless body slumped onto the floor and Kai couldn’t help but think, finally.

“You should’ve killed me when you had the chance to.”

“You did your job well sir,” spoke Chanyeol.

Kai's eyes turned into a sharp black colour and smirked.

“Let’s go, we have other matters to attend.”
