Saving Seconds [PLEASE READ THE LATEST CHAPTER]
Description
"Tradition could either define you or destroy you. But in our case, we are bound to the latter in a literal sense. Yes, tradition kills us – Seconds like me, at least; yet, the adults seem to cover it up with simple reasoning: “Kids, this is all for controlling our population.” Bull. I know for sure that this sick practice is rooted and done for something shallow. Overpopulation could call for countless solutions but not this. I am Jung Soojung, second female child tied to the Jung household and the sector of Vista, and I have been chosen to participate in this dirty little game. Oh God, help me." - Krystal, Saving Seconds

sneak peak
A series of knocks come flying on our front door, leaving our whole family in deafening silence as we fed on dinner.
“Did anyone of you invite a friend over?” My father looked up from his plate as he turned his gaze to each of us. We all shook our heads ‘no’ as another knock came in.
“Under the order of The Republic’s King, we are requested to deliver The Order to the Jung household of the Vista sector.” I heaved a heavy sigh as I chewed on my lower lip, thinking through my ways on how to escape from this rather cruel fate. I could sprint through the door and hide in the forest, or I could kill myself right this instant.
My elder sister, Jessica, placed her hand over mine and gave me a light squeeze. I didn’t notice that I was terribly shaking. I was not the type to show fear. I looked at her uneasily, but her gentle pair of eyes was enough to soothe me on the inside. Surely if it were my sister in this situation, she’d know what to do.
“May we please speak with the Jungs?”
The authoritative voice of the representative soldiers echoed from outside, leaving my father no choice but to stand and head for the door. This is it, and there’s no turning back; but seeing every member of my family fall into faces etched with despair left me nothing but a crushed heart.
And in that very moment, I loathed myself for being a Second.
The soldiers wrapped in blue and red armor marched toward the dining table as they both offered a bow to my sister and my father. Their smiles were one of the most disgusting things I’ve seen, for they curved all the way up to the middle of their cheeks – teeth shining tremendously but eyes clouded with darkness. The red-suited soldier reached for his leather messenger bag tied around his waist as he pulled out a peach ribbon-rolled, coffee-smelling paper – The Order. He cleared his throat and spoke in staged over-excitement, enough to make every member of our family cringe.
“With respect to the recognition of the Gala of Seconds, we hereby choose the Jung household’s second, Jung Soojung, as a participant and a delegate of the Vista Sector,” Please stop it, any more of this will pour devastating shades of torment to all of us, “as such, the household is requested to prepare their child for the banquet and the public screening scheduled during this month’s Full Moon. Congratulations!” That was it. That was all it would take for me to feel how much of a burden I am to my own family. Why did it have to be me?
Why did I have to be a Second?
