What If?

Description

The waves crash against Kyungsoo's tiny feet, his fingertips gripping the hem of Kai's shirt. 365 days left, he thought, his heart racing to the thought of losing his one and only friend. 365 days until I can't see you anymore.

Introduction

Kai was laying down on the hospital next to Kyungsoo, body cold of fear, eyes glued to the man softly drifting to sleep. He clasped his tiny hand with his large fingertips, softly brushing his soft skin and reaching over to kiss it. Kyungsoo didn't need to know, not just yet. But he knew that there'd be a day before he died that Kyungsoo would eventually know.

The light seemed to be trapped by the glass windows, the rays dappling the floor like they were bright markings. One landed on his hair as he pretended to wiggle it off, chuckling to himself. Would Kyungsoo like it if he looked as silly as this? His layers of hair in a mess, his clothes wrinkled by such movement, his silly face when he smiles. Maybe that'd make him feel better.

He took pity on Kyungsoo for visiting him the past few days; ever since the incident with football had caused him to break his leg. Eyes lowered to gaze at the beauty that was before him; pouted lips, big eyes, perfectly swift strands of hair covering his face. Sometimes, life was unfair, especially when you're worrying your friend with your own troubles. Yes, Kyungsoo knew about the leg injury, but not that. Kai was too timid to tell him, even though it's been confirmed for a few months already.

"Sorry," was all he could be able to breathe out before Kyungsoo twitched from the touch of his large hand. The doctor arrived to check his pulse and his ability, so he was forced to wake up. But, before he was able to leave, he looked back at Kai. His eyes gleamed with worry. But Kai gave him a reassuring smile, not a smirk. A kind smile. And Kai never does that.

"It'll be one year," Kyungsoo overhears. The calm and deep voice he always loved to hear was overcome with fear, stricken with no confidence. "Do you want to tell him? Do you want to let him know?"

"No," Kai replies, burying his head in his hands. It was too much of a hussle; he didn't want to hurt Kyungsoo's feelings. "But, one way or another, he will eventually find out you have can-"

"Stop!" Jong In screams. He clenched the part where his heart lay, trying to calm down because now it was starting to hurt. The doctor rushed over to help him breathe, but Kyungsoo didn't see anything that was happening. He could only pay attention to the hurling screams and the fits and cries that his friend gave.

His tiny hands started to tremble in fear. His eyes bulged out in anxiety. The metal door he was leaning on was opening and he had no choice but to pretend to be waiting and to not know what is happening. "Ah, Do Kyungsoo."

"S-Sorry," he stutters. Kyungsoo was just going to find out what Kai has that he doesn't know about. And, one way or another, he'll help him get through it like the lov- no, best friend- he is.

Cancer, he thought. Kai has cancer.

Warnings: Character death

I don't know what came into my head when I was typing this. I guess sad, angsty feels are in the way, and KaiSoo got mixed up with them. Yes, Jong In has cancer. Yes, he has a year to still live. I know, I know, TFIOS was inspired. But it wasn't. Personal stuffies, I guess. u.u
