Captured

Coming in with a pair of black camera and a white Polaroid on hand, a lady in her mid 30’s looked at the tall gates in front of her, the whole place having this round shape to it like a dome or arena of some sort as some familiar guards stood.

In her longer staring, bold words were written above the arc; it read “SEOUL SCHOOL OF PERFORMING ARTS (SOPA)”. It was none other than her former high school.

Having been approved by the security, she then swiped her alumni id, not forgetting to bow at the people who greeted and acknowledged her presence.

Walking on the familiar grounds, the raven haired individual smiled. It had been so long since her last visit.

Making her way to her destination which was the school’s museum, she took the small flight of stairs with mixed emotions, slowly making her way inside where series of hanged photos welcomed her sight. Taking small steps at a time, she then scanned the place in awe, with her eventually stopping by to admire the framed pictures.

Some things just don’t change.

And while she was reminiscing at the memories that suddenly invaded her thoughts, a soft tap on her shoulders made her snap her head, turning to see someone else smiling at her.

It was none other than her best friend.

“I thought you won’t make it today”

The girl said, a shorter one at that.

Smiling again albeit weakly, she then pointed at the further end of the place.

“It’s also my exhibit, of course I would be here…”

She then replied softly.

Having seen the eyes that were obviously still hurting, the other girl didn’t have any words to say. Not only she knows the story, but the feeling as well.

“You know you don’t have to do it…”

She gently reminded.

Shaking her head at the words, the taller girl then stared at one of the photos.

“But I want to Seungwan. For her, I have to”

Looking at the same image, a picture of a smiling couple welcome her sight, making the same age friend understood the words spoken.

“Seulgi…”

Closing her eyes to suppress the feeling, a moment of silence took place before the other turned to look at her companion.

“Don’t worry…I’ll be fine”

And with those as her last words, the taller girl left her buddy who is silently looking at the leaving image of her dearest friend.

Crowding the opening display for the works of the famous photographer, a group of high school girls came into the place as they scanned the surroundings, seeing tons of images that spoke of hidden stories as they followed along, letting out their admiration for the shots as they tried to comprehend the messages it wanted to convey.

And while they took curiosity for the picture perfect scenarios, by the end of the line, a tall girl was staring alongside them, having a look that was both proud and melancholic at the same time.

Looking at the portrait of a tall building, she then saw a vague image, just like a flashback of the past being played all of a sudden.

It was the same place where she met the one she loves the most, which was the front gate of their beloved high school.

- 1st shot -

Walking nonchalantly as she took numerous selcas at one of the upcoming school she might enter, a girl having this green-tip hair came into the picture along with her trademark pouty lips, taking the shot as she posed shamelessly in front of the place.

According to her strange logic, the school which will have the best self camera taken will be the next place she would decide to spend her hell high school life.

Excited at the outcome, she then smiled wider and took about 2 more shots.

When she checked the taken pictures however, one had a blurry image of someone else and it made her stop to look at the photo bomber, immediately turning to her surroundings to catch the criminal who magically appeared and disappeared out of nowhere.

At her longer staring, she then identified the uniform which belonged to the school she’s currently in front at.

It was actually that day that she had decided where high school she would be attending in the next years to come.

Not having much memory of that instance, when she saw the image of her department, the bear look-alike couldn’t help but shake her head.

“I remember you were following me back then…”

- 2nd shot -

“Ah! That was close!”

Stalking behind her senior slowly, a girl in her freshman year having a hair that goes along well with her yellow and white colored uniform was hiding behind a small tree as she bit her lower lip, afraid that the other had seen her.

Fortunately, her crush was known for being clueless to her surroundings as she made her way, brushing off the incident as she continued to her class.

Though it had started by a mere search for the mysterious girl in her photo, the curiosity turned into something more that it made her wonder if love at first sight also applies to pictures.

“Hey, Joy, what are you doing here?”

Almost wanting to smack her classmate for appearing out of nowhere, the culprit just saved her energy for the more important things before she remembered the senior she was suppose to be looking out.

“Ah! Now I lost her!”

Pouting and stomping at the ground like a spoiled brat, the tall girl didn’t know that the girl she was looking for was actually watching her on the sidelines.

At the remembrance of the memory, Seulgi couldn’t help but laugh at her own obliviousness, she was such a naïve kid back then.

Moving on to the next photo, the image of the school benches welcomed her sight.

- 3rd shot -

Following her just like the regular days, the tall girl with green hair tip began hiding at one of the pillars nearby, looking at the girl at the far end of the bleachers, drinking a can of orange juice.

Unaware at the secret admirer that was, well, admiring her from behind the tall columns, the sly freshman began to smile to herself while watching the girl who was the target of her so called affection.

“From this angle, unnie is really cute~”

Smiling wider when the older girl began to stretch her arms with boredom, the endearing action (as she puts it) made her swoon on her place as she cringe by herself, not minding the looks the other students are giving her that moment.

The only thing that destroyed her happiness was the ringing of the school bell, indicating that lunch time was over.

Smiling at the happy times, she then continued walking, until she saw the photo of the corridor, eventually catching sight of her most favorite room which was none other than the music room.

- 4th shot -

“S-Sunbae!”

After sometime had passed, the secret admirer finally got a chance to introduce herself as she miraculously gathered all her courage, wanting to formally ask for the other’s friendship as she fidget on her place, wanting to almost back out at the very last minute when all the lines she rehearsed for this moment suddenly disappeared from her head.

“Yes?”

The older girl asked dumfounded, strengthening the image she was known for.

Swallowing the lump on , she opened her lips, her cracked and nervous voice making out to embarrass her but it was now or never.

“C-Can you teach me how to play the guitar?”

She eventually stuttered a very obvious lie.

Almost face palming herself, the self proclaimed genius girl left the place in a hurry, wanting to be gone as she made a total fool out of herself.

And while the popular girl looked at her running image, something clicked onto her mind before her lips turned into a smile.

“I would love to! The name is Seulgi by the way!”

Screaming at the top of her lungs, it effectively caught the attention of the other as she stopped almost instantly, turning to look at her with a face that seems like she had seen a ghost.

“I remember seeing you during our practice sometimes, you should have approached me earlier you know”

The known teddy bear stated.

And while the other was recovering from initial shock, it was that day that officially marked the start of their friendship.

Trying to contain her smile from getting wider, the raven haired girl decided to move on the next image, or else people would start thinking weird of her.

Welcoming her sight, the old bridge along the way to the younger girl’s house is what she saw.

- 5th shot -

After being friends with the younger girl, the two are now inseparable buddies as they even go with each other even after school ends, spending the lazy afternoons with each other either by guitar practice, food stall hunting, shopping, going to naerobang (karaoke), or by simply spending time with one other.

It was one of those times where the older girl was escorting the other when something crossed her mind, not giving the idea much thought since it was the truth anyway.

“Park Joy Sooyoung”

Turning to look behind with an unusual sharp glare, the girl who was called stiffens on her place as she even jumped lightly in surprise at the name calling.

“Y-Yes?”

She said in all nervousness.

“Go out with me next Saturday”

Is what the other said, more like demanded.

“Neh?”

*AN: In Korea, both YES and expressions like HUH are pronounced the same way*

The taller girl replied back in confusion.

“Is that a Yes or what?”

Giggling at the ambiguous answer, the older girl asked once again.

“No, I mean yes! Ah! I mean of course! I will go out with you”

Though she was baffled by the string of events, the younger girl knew that all she wants right now is to be able to spend more time with the other.

And without much argument, the so called date was settled.

It was after so much later that the other realized that there was more than a mere going out on this date they both agreed.

Remembering how she tricked the other into accepting her request, the mammal look alike couldn’t help but chuckle, seeing the next photo which was the Art department’s rooftop.

- 6th shot -

That Saturday, in favor of the older girl’s demand, the younger girl came to their meeting place a little earlier since she was rather excited, not being able to sleep properly that she went straight to meet the charming senior when the sun rises.

To her surprise, she then saw a passed out someone right below the old large billboard.

“Unnie!”

Going directly for the girl lying on the floor, she then nudge the older one who seem to have lost consciousness, eyes closed while having this sprinkle of bloody colored paint all over her.

She then thought for a moment she was going to have a heart attack when she saw the other sleeping lifelessly on the hard and cold ground, as if it was a scenario from a murder themed movie.

Opening her eyes just in time to see the concern and worried face of the chubby cheeked junior, the known teddy bear girl titled her head, trying to sit up as she smiled at the other.

“Oh! Joy~ you’re early!”

She then stated, yawning as she did.

“Unnie! What are you doing here sleeping?”

The younger one said in mixed emotions. She was mad yet she can’t with the older girl.

“Oh, you didn’t see? Then look above you”

Following the command as she did, the other saw a big image of a red heart.

“Tada~”

And with the older girl standing in front of her, she then opened her arms wide, making the impression of giving a hug.

Also standing up to see the picture clearly, series of photos made up the famous shape that was outlined with scarlet color, identifying them as stolen shots of herself in various angles.

“Park Sooyoung~ I don’t know when it exactly happened, but I think I might had fallen in love with you”

Inhaling deeply as she did, it was then when the older girl confessed her feelings.

“I know I lack at so many aspects but will you accept my heart? I won’t promise you everything but I will try my best”

She then said, followed by a charming smile. The very same one that made her fall head over heels.

“Seulgi unnie…”

Of course, without having to ask, from the very beginning, the younger girl had given hers and it was such a miracle that the other did like her back.

“I…I’d always been in love with you…”

She then said softly.

“So my answer would be yes”

And with that said, the popular senior and the crying genius girl are now hugging each other tight on the rooftop of the building they were in.

Shaking her head when she remembered how the Art department instructor scolded her and made her clean the entire rooftop for all the mess she did, the teddy bear look alike continued on until she saw one of her favorite photos.

- 7th shot -

“Come on Joy please, hide me just this once~ Mrs. Kim will really kill me if she’ll get me alive!”

Trespassing on one of the class room as she dragged back her girlfriend who saw her running for her life, the taller one was left no choice but to tag along to the other who was playing ‘catch me if you can’ game with the strict supervisor.

“Just what on earth did you do anyway unnie? I don’t want to get involve with your mess”

The other then said, they are currently on the freshman’s room, which is also her homeroom.

“I kinda forgot to return one of the canvas. I was practicing painting the other day and it was so happen that she keeps track of their numbers. I was going to return it now but I saw her along the way and yeah…you know what happened next”

She then reasoned, peeking behind the other who was currently looking out for the scary teacher.

“Aish this girl...then wait for me, I’ll talk it out with her. For the mean time, hide over there”

Pointing at the desk not too far, the mammal look alike immediately complied.

It took a lot of Joy to sport indifference as she giggled at her lover, wanting to pinch the other because of her cuteness.

Going out of the room so that she could relay the message, fortunately for the senior, the firm adult believed the words and had decided to let the matter slip.

“You can go out now, she said just make sure to return it and you’d be spared”

Bouncing out from the desk like the animal she was known for, the other gave her a bear hug and said her gratitude on the younger girl.

“Thanks~ you’re really the best Jwoy!”

She then said in failed aegyo.

“You babo. I should be rewarded for this you know”

The other stated.

“Sure! What do you want? Chicken? Meat? Name it!”

Looking at how excited the older girl had become, for some strange reasons, Joy’s line of vision shifted down until she saw something cherry colored.

“Lips…”

She then said unconsciously as she bit her own.

“Eh? Lips?”

Surprised at the words, Seulgi stopped ranting and titled her head to meet the gaze of the other.

“H-Huh? I-I mean there’s something on your lips! Haha…H-here let me take it o-off”

Blushing madly at how her tongue slipped, the taller one was hoping the other would let the matter slide as she tried her best to get out of the uncomfortable situation. The older one was known to be dense and she really hoped that her reputation live up to her expectation.

And while her hand was reaching for the so called “dirt”, the senior suddenly took hold of her wrist that it made her heart beats ten times faster than its normal pace.

Adding a teasing look and a sly smirk, the known teddy bear slowly tugged her forwards, slowly, gently, until their faces are just inches apart.

Of course, since the situation took a sudden u-turn, the younger one didn’t know what to do as she got lost at the intensity of the other’s gaze.

“U-Unnie…W-What are y-”

Leaning in without thinking, the almost inaudible protest wasn’t heard and the rest of the mumble was muffled and sealed off by the cherry lips that was pressed against her own.

Wrapping her heart in warmth, the moment filled her in dazed sensation, closing her eyes to feel more of the unexplainable feeling that was enveloping her with happiness.

Within that magical moment, their first kiss took place.

By the end of it, a soft smile was given when they looked at each other’s face, the redness due to their embarrassment became vivid, eventually making them laugh at their own shyness towards the happening.

Suddenly blushing when she remembers the series of kisses and making out in the same room, she then hoped the students alongside her would not mind her red ears, deciding to move on so she could forget the intimate moments that invaded her thoughts.

The next picture made her melancholic just like how the sunset image it portrayed.

- 8th shot -

“Unnie! Where are you taking me? Are we there yet?”

Laughing at how the taller girl was being hyped up at her surprise, Seulgi can’t help but smile as she guided the other whose eyes were being covered by her hands, wanting to assure the other won’t try to sneak a peek or else her gift would be ruined.

“Chill won’t yah? We’re almost there”

Finally reaching their destination after a few minutes’ walk, the older girl removed her hands to show her surprise.

“Tada! Happy anniversary honey~”

She then said, showing a perfect view of the sunset along a prepared picnic set.

“Uwah! Unnie you remembered!”

The now sophomore student said, engulfing her Arts major student of a lover in a tight hug.

Guiding them on the mat as both girls sat on it, the other smiled as she landed her head on the other’s lap. It had become a habit for her to do so and the other didn’t seem to mind at all.

“Of course I would silly. The only 3 things I won’t ever forget would be yours and my birthday plus our anniversary”

The known popular girl stated.

Pinching her sides at the cheesy remark, the comment made the giant baby blush never the less.

“So now you’re a sweet talker? Should I be suspicious of your college?”

Joy then teased.

“Excuse me young lady, I am for one, an aspiring romanticist”

Smiling at the words, the other just hit her shoulders lightly.

“Yeah right, and I’m the next food critique”

Letting out a chuckle, both girls laughed.

And while they were having fun, something clicked on the mind of the older girl as she took out a wrapped box from her side bag.

At this, the teddy bear finally sat up from her comfortable spot.

“Oh by the way, here, I got you a gift. Sorry if it’s not that much”

She then said, handing the item from before.

Smiling at the thoughtfulness, the pretty teen ager took out a similar looking object.

“Thank you unnie. I got you something too, though I was really tempt to not give it to you in case you forgot our anniv”

She then confessed.

“Yah! That was mean though I get what you’re pointing at. Anyway, why don’t you take a look? I’m not sure if the model would be of your liking but I hope you’ll like it somehow”

Seulgi then said.

“Anything you give me is fine. I suggest you open mine too~ I saved a lot for it actually”

Joy replied.

“Then on the count of three?”

The older girl asked.

“Sure!”

The other nodded.

“1...2…3!”

And with both of them ripping the wrappers apart at the same time, shiny lenses welcomed their eyes along their black and white colored bodies.

“Hey, isn’t this…”

Identifying their gifts as the one their respective partners had been eyeing at, both girls looked at one another in shock.

“You said you wanted a Polaroid for better selcas…”

The older girl explained.

“And you said you wanted to buy that camera especially since it’s on sale…”

The other confessed.

And with them laughing at the incident of, they commemorate their anniversary with their first taken image.

One was a sunset view and the other was a selca of the taller girl giving her lover a peck on her cheeks.

Taking out the image of the Polaroid that remained in her pocket, Seulgi felt her eyes started to mist at the thought, since it was something for her eyes only, she decided to not include it for exhibit.

And while she reluctantly peeled her eyes off the item, the next picture almost broke her heart as it was that one image she wanted to erase if she only could.

- 9th shot -

Catching her breath as she came to the place as fast as she could, a small girl found another person waiting outside a certain room, looking anxious and uneasy as she paced from left to right.

“What happened Seul?”

She then asked, tapping the shoulders of her friend who didn’t even noticed her presence.

“I don’t know Seungwan…one minute she was just fine and the next she was vomiting blood! What do I do now?”

The other replied, her face clearly spelled fatigue but she was more worried above everything else.

“Shh…calm down. It’s going to be fine ok? Maybe she just over did it. It’s exams week and all that stuff”

Seeing how tears started to escape her eyes, the other wanted to say something more, as if there was a missing puzzle to this scenario that she must know.

“T-This is not the first time Wendy…I saw her vomit blood too on some occasions…at first I thought it was just over stress…”

Seulgi, who finally had the heart to confess and accept it, said in sad tone.

“I-I...maybe it’s nothing serious…”

Her friend tried to put light at the words.

Remaining silent since neither didn’t knew what to say, it was when something crossed the mind of the bear look alike that it made her slump onto the chair in defeat, burying her face onto her palms.

“I-If something will happen to her, I don’t think I can take it…I just can’t imagine life without her”

The other suddenly stated.

Snapping at such words, the smaller girl pulled the other and almost gave her a punch, not remembering her friend to be such a pessimist person.

“Yah! What the hell are you talking about?! She will be fine ok? Don’t say such words!”

She then said, wanting to insert something positive to the already mourning girl. It was still early to speculate and the other shouldn’t foretell something unnecessary.

“But…”

Tightening her hold on the collar of her buddy, the other sported a face she had never ever shown before.

It was of self hatred and anger.

“I said she will be fine!”

She then said in firm tone.

“Seungwan…”

Wanting to apologize for provoking the other to in such state, the taller girl was about to say sorry when the other continued her words.

“I already lost someone important in the past…I don’t want you to suffer the same Seul…I know she will be fine, Joy is such a strong girl”

Wendy, who had kept that part of herself hidden, finally confessed.

And with the atmosphere getting heavier, the appearance of the doctor intensified the happening with his serious tone.

“Who among here is Ms. Kang Seulgi?”

He then said.

With both girls attending to his inquiry, the one in question raised her hand.

“That’s me. I’m Seulgi”

The owner of the name said.

“Ms. Seulgi, the patient wished to speak with you”

And with that said, the tall girl entered the room with her friend giving her one last tap on her shoulders, as if wanting to say that everything will be fine.

Looking at the image of their smiling faces, that very last image of them taking a selca was the only memory left of what they had, making her lower her head as to hide the tears that was threatening to fall.

“Joy!”

Coming in as she immediately went to the younger girl’s side, the older girl stood by the other as she let her tears fall, like never ending rain.

“Unnie…why do you make it seem like I was going to die?”

The other joked lightly, trying to lift the spirits of the other.

“Sooyoung ah!!!”

Hugging her as tight as she could, Seulgi didn’t said another word and instead, buried her head on her lover’s warmth.

“Seulgi unnie…”

Brushing the blonde hair gently, the now orange haired senior high student smiled weakly.

“You’re not going to leave me right? You won’t right?”

The college student asked, her eyes are red and puffy with all the crying but didn’t mind as long as she could see the other.

“Unnie…”

Holding on tight, the younger girl didn’t have the heart to look at her lover in the eyes.

In actually, even though she knew of the illness that was in a way inherited, she knew to herself that she didn’t want any of it. If only she could, she didn’t want anything else than a normal body.

Though it was expected of her not to give in, even if it was such a short time, she wished to be loved and love in return. However, she didn’t want things to go this way, seeing how the older girl in such state is more heart breaking than anything else.

“Joy, please… say that you won’t leave me…”

And while the older girl begged for her assurance, even if it was just a lie, even if it was just to console her, she faked a smile and nodded her head.

“Of course I won’t. I love you too much for me to do that”

She then said. She knew she was being selfish but that’s all she ever wanted. So even if it hurts, she had lied, deceiving the other girl into believing something she could never fulfill.

Before the day ends, they both took a selca on her room.

It was the last picture of them that her white Polaroid was able to take.

*****

“I can’t believe you lied to me…”

Looking at their picture as she greeted her teeth to suppress the pain, Seulgi took one last look at the image of the smiling couple, somehow finding the strength to smile genuinely despite how much it kills her inside whenever she was reminded of the sad past.

And just like how she continued with life the next day after the incident, she took a step forward and finally left the museum along with her heart.

“Goodbye…I hope I finally fulfilled your wish…”

When one of the students inside the place saw her, it was then she realized.

“Ah! It’s her!”

She then exclaimed, pointing at the stranger who had a stunning similarity at the girl on the second to the last image.

Crowding the previous selca photo, the names Kang Seulgi and Park Sooyoung were written below.

And with that said, the very last picture finally completed the story of love the famous photographer wanted to say, but was unable to put into words.

At the end of the series of pictures, the very last was the image of the girl who had green hair tips, smiling widely and charmingly as if she held all the happiness in the world.

“Excuse me…”

Getting inside a hidden room along the streets of Seoul, Seulgi entered the place as it was where her friend Wendy suggested her to go, saying that she knew of a famous “death communicator” who would be able to help her with her problem.

Though she didn’t want to go at first, her desperation to see and speak to her deceased lover once more became the driving force as why she decided to go.

The moment she set foot inside, a small part of the dark place lit up.

“I had been waiting unnie…”

Surprised at the appearance of a younger girl, she then bowed in acknowledgement to her presence.

Though the said shaman seems like she was not even on high school level, the older girl knew better than to judge people. Besides, if she could really help her, then she would spare the details as long she could fulfill her yearning.

“Kim Yeri, at your service”

The mysterious being said in low and eerie tone.

“Y-Yeri shii…”

She was about to ask on what she needed to do when the other pointed the chair nearby, along with a box of something that seems like a matchbox.

“Light the match, by end of its flame you shall be with her for one last time”

The young girl instructed.

Without wasting her time questioning, the other did what she was told to do.

Seeing how the orange flame burned and lit up, the older girl then closed her eyes, hoping that when she opened them, then she would be seeing the image of the person that she wanted to see the most.

*****

Opening her eyes to see how someone who had this orange hair is now looking at her with tear stained eyes, Seulgi was unable to breathe properly, it seems like the happening was too good to be true and she felt a suffocating pain.

“J-Joy…”

She then said, if it was a dream, then she does not wish to wake up anymore.

“Seulgi unnie…”

The other said in her familiar tone while her voice was coated with longing.

“Sooyoung ah…”

The mono eyelid girl said, her vision starting to turn blurry with tears that but didn’t want to take a chance of blinking or else the image might go away.

“Unnie, I’m sorry that I can’t stay long…but do remember, I love you…for always”

The younger girl said, running a hand on the face of the other.

To Seulgi, everything felt so real, as if the real Joy is with her, right here, right now, in this moment in time.

Trying to swallow all the words that wanted to escape her lips, she held everything in, letting the only important few to leave .

“I love you...for me there is only you…”

“…And until that time we could be together again, please wait for me Sooyoung ah…”

She then said, holding onto the hand that was on her face.

“I will…I promise you that I will…”

Leaning in slowly, their lips touched, lightly, before passionately pressing it gently against each other’s own.

Holding on for as long as she could, after a few seconds of warmth, the sensation leaves her along with the other girl.

When she dared to opened her closed eyes, Joy was gone.

Finally letting her tears to flow freely, she let everything out as she cried with all her might, firmly holding onto the promise that would remain in her heart for as long as she lives.

*****

Looking at the picture of the girl who she loves, and still loves, the pain in Seulgi’s heart resurfaces once more.

Though it was true that she had moved on from the denial stage, the fact that she still longed for the other remains.

And no matter how much time passed by, she can still say to everyone, that her heart won’t ever change.

And it will always remain captured.

They say that the best and most beautiful thing in the world cannot be seen nor touched, for they must be felt with the heart.

A picture can hold us captive. It is like giving a piece of your soul away. You allow other people to see the world through your eyes.

And if a picture really paints a thousand words, then those images also have the ability to store fragments and pieces of our past, bring people back to life and keep the memories alive within our hearts.

- THE END -

YES~ finally posted it! ^_^

Though I was hesitant to post it because I killed some of the girls (do forgive me for it TT_TT), I'm satisfied at the ending even if it was a sad one.

When I first wrote this, the writing style reminds me of "from first to last" and I think I'm most comfortable with this kind of writing. Anyway, do forgive me for the errors and typos since I just posted it right off the bat without proof reading it anymore. XD

Chapter 1: wow. i love the way you tell their love story. it's simple but very creative. but why you kill Sooyoung and let Seulgi suffer?
