30 Stops to Home

Description

Two lives. One journey.

Searching for a home,

Searching for a family,

Searching for a heart.

But just like they said,
a journey leads to certain adventure,
for better or for worse.

Foreword

Carrying the heavy textbook in his hands, Kyungsoo scanned through the words on the white page. Almost as quickly, his mind picked up the information and proccessed it like a well-oiled machine.

It was another day, where the sky was grey, where other commuters snored, slept or talked, where he was sitting at the back of the bus reading textbooks in an attempt to grasp the new concepts he was about to learn during the day later. He then turned the page, muttering the facts he had implanted in his mind from the page before in a rapid fire manner to ensure he wouldn't forget them.

Upon finishing the chapter, Kyungsoo closed the book gently and leaned back onto the head rest. Other than the rumbling of the bus, there was barely no other sound. Barely. As he closed his eyes, he could hear the elderly fishmonger who had an unkempt white beard snoring peacefully two seats in front of him. He could hear the group of girls who always wore friendship bracelets chatting softly a few more seats in front.

He then opened his eyes again, and shifted his gaze to the world outside the glass panels. The scenery rushed by as the bus drove on steadily as if it were reluctant to let Kyungsoo see the mothers accompanying their children to school on the streets, or the many elderly strolling by while holding hands in a tender manner. Actually, it was Kyungsoo who did not want to see the sight - it reminded him too much. Too much.

Then again, he loved taking photographs of the view. He had probably taken photographs of the same traffic junction over a hundred times, be it in the morning or in the afternoon over many years. He would then see the background of the junction change. There was first a statue, then it was removed and replaced by an ice cream shop, followed by another statue being erected beside the shop. As of now, there were many other small business outlets beside the ice cream shop. As of now, it was normal. As of now, nothing changed.

You might ask why Kyungsoo had this habit of taking photographs over and over again. The answer was simple, he simply wanted to see how long it took before the scenery changed. The sound of the shutters of his phone camera echoed through the still air of the bus as Kyungsoo took the photo of the traffic junction, then bringing his hand down. It could be because of his bitterness, he himself didn't even know. But Kyungsoo was certain of one thing - he wanted to see how long it would take for things to change.

For a second, someone could have been just jogging around the park. That person could have passed away in the next. Everything was an uncertainty, everything could change without notice.

After scanning through the previous pictures, Kyungsoo slipped the phone back into his pocket and rested his head on the back with a resigned thud. Staring into the plastic roof of the bus, he wondered how long it could take to the next major change in his life. He already had one, and to put it short, he did not like it. In fact, he hated it.

Countless rows in front of him, another soft click of a shutter sounded inconspicuously and the girl smiled as she looked at the result she had begotten.
