Part Two

Ripped Wings

PART TWO

Sehun hands Kyungsoo another scroll. But this time, he takes it willingly instead of bickering like what he did the last time.

“What’s this?” Kyungsoo asks the other angel, but it seems like Sehun doesn’t know because he just shrugged.

“Again, it was delivered to me. Passed down by the Seraphim they said.”

Kyungsoo decided to just accept it and leave instantly later on. After all, he doesn’t trust Jongin’s company anymore – not when he’s with a little cunning devil who he sees as his best friend.

“I’ll be leaving now, Sehun. I’ll be back after everything else.”

“Yeah. Goodbye and God bless, Kyungsoo. May you defeat that devil and save Kai’s soul.”

“I will. God knows I will. Kai will return to heaven. The Paradise is his home anyway.”

Kyungsoo opens the scroll that Sehun handed him. It contains another mission involving Jongin. But it’s not just Jongin this time. It also involves a female. A female that is meant to be one with Jongin’s soul.

The one humans call a soulmate.

He needs to make them meet. Again.

Because the person in the scroll is someone familiar to Kyungsoo. It was the girl that Jongin was talking to when he first arrived on Earth. It was the girl that Jongin asked to throw the candy wrapper in the right bin.

Who knew they’re supposed to end up together?

*****

Kyungsoo sat closely beside Jongin as they – together with Chanyeol – played some racing game. Chanyeol was sitting closely beside Jongin as well, with their shoulders almost touching. Kyungsoo scoffed at how scheming the devil could get. Of course, they are closer in a sense and Kyungsoo has been a part of Jongin’s life for only a few months.

“Jongin do you want something to eat? I’m getting hungry.” Kyungsoo places down his game console and stands up. He wipes off some non-existent dirt as he make his way to the kitchen. If there’s a thing that Kyungsoo knows Chanyeol can’t beat, it’s his cooking. An angel’s cooking is always the best.

“Oh yeah, I’m kinda’ hungry now. Can you make us your special kimchi spaghetti?” Jongin was peeking in the kitchen, pouting. Kyungsoo snickers internally when he sees it. Acting cute doesn’t fit him.

“Okay okay. How about you, Chanyeol?” Kyungsoo asks and if someone listened well, he asked it as he groaned.

“Hmm, I’ll just have whatever my best friend haves.” Chanyeol emphasizes the word ‘best friend’ just to spite Kyungsoo. And it was surely effective because Kyungsoo was tempted to put some poison on Chanyeol’s food wanting to test if the devil could die by that.

*****

Jongin was sleeping peacefully when Chanyeol woke up in the middle of the night. He jumped out of his bed silently, not wanting to create any noise that might wake his roommate.

The giant walks toward Jongin’s bed and tilts his head to watch the latter as he sleeps peacefully. Chanyeol wanted to wrap Jongin with a blanket and take him down to hell because he’s so cute when he smiles while sleeping.

“What are you dreaming about, Kai?” Chanyeol whispers as he approaches his sleeping roommate, “I want to know. I’m so curious.” A wide grin was on Chanyeol’s face. He was just about to reach for the angel’s face when –

“What do you think you’re doing, Chanyeol?” Kyungsoo was there – standing by the window of the dark room, arms crossed and eyebrow raised.

“Hello there Kyungsoo. I was just about to give Jongin a nightmare but then here you are, ruining everything.” Chanyeol might’ve been surprised by Kyungsoo’s sudden appearance but it doesn’t show.

“A nightmare? Just as when he’s dreaming about Heaven, you plan to do this. Aren’t you a little devil?”

“Yes, I’m a devil, Kyungsoo. In case you forgot.”

“Of course. I will never forget that fact.” Kyungsoo walks slowly near Jongin’s sleeping body, “That’s why I’ll be getting him for a while.” Chanyeol didn’t have any time to react before Kyungsoo disappeared along Jongin. Leaving no trace for the devil to follow.

“There’s always next time for me.” He finally says before smiling once again and climbing back to his bed to take some rest.

He will have a lot of work to do by tomorrow. He’s sure of it.

*****

Jongin wakes up the following day on a bench in the park – the same park where he always sees Kyungsoo. His head was spinning and he couldn’t stand properly. He couldn’t remember anything from last night and how the hell he ended up sleeping in the park when he was sure that he went to straight his bed the night before.

Jongin sits up, his hands trying to massage his temples to ease the pain in his head. He wanted to remember what happened last night but it seems like his own body doesn’t want him to. Everything hurts like he just went home from a whole day of work out in a gym.

He groans as he stand up, his eyes half-closed as he walk away from the bench. He thought there would be no one for him to bump into because it’s still early and from the looks of it, the sun only rose a few minutes ago. But no. There was one person and Jongin managed to bump into her.

“Sorry. I’m sorry, miss.” Jongin was feeling a little bit groggy and even his apology was a little bit muffled.

“It’s okay.” The girl says and she looks at Jongin with a small smile as a sign of accepting the latter’s apology. Their eyes met at that time and both of them saw it. There was a hint of recognition in both of their eyes, like they had seen each other before.

Jongin blinked, not saying anything even if he tries to open his mouth. The girl stood frozen too, waiting for whatever the lad was about to say and the said lad didn’t know where he finally got the courage but he opens his mouth again, wanting to ask the girl her name and where they had seen each other before.

But oops. Maybe today’s not juts his day.

“Kim Jongin!” A deep voice boomed form the other side of the road. Jongin turns and sees Park Chanyeol there, huffing tiredly, his hands on his knees as he try to regain his breath. He was only wearing a plain t-shirt and a pair of dark blue jeans. His hair was disheveled, maybe because of running? Jongin doesn’t really know.

But at that moment, Kim Jongin temporarily forgets about the girl he was talking to and prioritizes his friend who looks like he’s about to faint anytime soon.

“Hey! Chanyeol? Why the hell am I in the park? Did you bring me here last night? Were you trying to kill me? It’s freezing cold!” says Jongin after crossing the road to get nearer to his friend.

Chanyeol scratches his neck and smiles, “I’m sorry, Jonginnie. You’ll forgive me, right? I thought you’d wake up in the middle of the night and go back home but you didn’t.” he says before giving Jongin a cute expression (but it terrified him, to be honest).

“Stop, that’s disgusting.” Jongin shows a disgusted expression and Chanyeol smacks him behind his head. The two of them laughed afterwards not thinking about those that might find them weird.

“Let’s go home, Jongin. I’m starving.” Chanyeol tugs Jongin beside him knowing what might happen if they don’t leave now. But at that moment, Jongin stops – he stops and looks back to the place where he was talking to the girl before. But he saw no one. She left.

Jongin sighed.

Chanyeol grinned.

*****

Kyungsoo scoffs and throws Yixing’s mirror down to the grassy field.

Chanyeol did it again, that freaking devil. He ruins everything Kyungsoo plans for Jongin’s salvation.

The angel groans for the nth time and he felt annoyed at the cunning devil who always knew what to do.

Kyungsoo picks up the mirror a moment later and flew away from the field.

*****

Sehun was more than surprised to see another scroll in his abode, one fair day.

Kyungsoo’s not here, the guardian angel whispers to himself. He thought those scrolls were only delivered to him for Kyungsoo’s mission purposes

He was about to ask Yixing about it when he spots his name written on the golden ribbon tied to the scroll. He was puzzled of course, but he carefully takes the item, opens it and reads it.

And he wished he didn’t.

Written on that scroll was an order – an order by the King of Heaven himself. On that scroll was an instruction about stopping a certain angel who is starting to break the rules of heaven.

That angel is Kyungsoo.

And Sehun needs to take him away before he completely feels like a human being and turns into one of the Fallen.

*****

Jongin yawns for the nth time. He didn’t get a very nice sleep the previous night. He was having nightmares – nightmares that he doesn’t really understand.

His dream started when he was thrown to a burning hot pit and there was nothing but eternal darkness. It was horrid. His flesh was shredded and torn to pieces repeatedly. His nails were pulled out of his fingers as if those are just accessories, and his heart was stabbed a thousand times.

Jongin also dreamt that he had wings – pure white wings that spread so wide. But then it withered when a pair of skeleton hands touched them. The wings turned black and then into ashes before disappearing completely.

He remembered he was crying as he hugged his knees in that dream. It felt so real that when he woke up, he was breathing heavily and he couldn’t bear to close his eyes anymore. He was so scared.

So now, he’s facing the consequence of not sleeping properly.

Jongin walked to his class like some zombie, swaying his body as if he was drunk. His eyes half-closed because of too much drowsiness.

The devil took that opportunity.

What would happen if Kim Jongin falls from the stairs? Oh that would be a very pleasing sight. An angel dying as a human because of a demon. That is something the higher-ups wouldn’t be so proud of.

Jongin was too sleepy to even notice his surroundings. There were even instances where he bumps into someone and he could only apologize groggily.

He didn’t see that once he takes a few more steps, he’d be nothing but a cold corpse and his soul would be owned by a demon instead of going to where it truly belongs.

“Jongin!” That angelic voice. Only one person could own that very beautiful voice.

Jongin snaps out of his sleepy daze and faces Kyungsoo who was running towards him at the very moment. Kyungsoo looks so radiant and he was beaming very brightly, Jongin couldn’t help but curve his lips upward to form and identical smile.

“Oh hello Kyungsoo hyung. It’s good to see you today.”

The two of them talked and talked while Chanyeol rolls his eyes behind them, cursing the angel for being such a meddler.

Just you wait. That angel’s soul will be mine.

*****

“Yixing please help me with this. I don’t know what to do. I need to restrain Kyungsoo but he’s… he’s…” Sehun didn’t know what to say. It was like words are a foreign thing for him. The angel in front of him only smiles and holds his hand.

“Trust our Father, Sehun. Do this as he told you and everything will work according to his plan. Have faith.”

Sehun looks at him directly as if wanting much more answers. His thoughts are a little jumbled and messed up, he doesn’t understand why he – a mere guardian angel – is the one being appointed to restrain a Principal angel like Kyungsoo.

“Sehun, trust Him. God knows what He’s doing.”

The younger angel finally nods and sets off on his mission while Yixing smiles and prays to God.

“Guide him Father. He’s a little disarrayed about this but I’m sure he’ll be following Your will until the end.”

*****

After a little too many attempts of trying to kill Jongin and a lot of meddling from Kyungsoo, Chanyeol was so sure that he had enough. There was no way he can succeed with his plan as long as that puny angel lives. He needs to remove him. Kyungsoo needs to disappear.

If not, then that angel needs to become one of the Fallen.

Kyungsoo sighs out of exhaustion. He has been trying to save Jongin’s life from Chanyeol for God-knows-how-many-times that was. He wants to take a rest for a while and lay down without that devil creeping anywhere near him.

But he knew that plan would be very impossible when Chanyeol appears beside him, that devilish grin displayed all over his face.

“Good day to you, Kyungsoo.” said the devil as he takes the space beside Kyungsoo.

“There is nothing good with my day now that you’re here. You’re suffocating me with your immorality, go away.” Kyungsoo groans and moves a little away from Chanyeol. But the devil laughs and moves closer to the angel.

My immorality? Oh how nice. Of course, I’m a devil. It’s my nature. But how about your immorality?”

Kyungsoo didn’t notice it but Chanyeol’s eyes darkened and his smile became much filled with darkness. The angel swallowed, not wanting to speak or say a word to the devil.

“Why are you quiet all of a sudden? Aren’t you supposed to answer me?” Kyungsoo wants to smack the devil and throw him back to hell where he belongs, but he can’t. He could not even move. It was like he’s glued to the ground by the devil beside him.

“Oh. Now I see. You’re afraid, aren’t you?” A sudden realization hits Kyungsoo. He heard the devil laugh and he couldn’t help but feel chills. He tried to open his mouth to speak but no words came out.

“You’re not supposed to be afraid. You’re an angel. You’re His warrior – His follower. So why are you looking at me with those eyes right now? Eyes filled with so much fear and horror?” Chanyeol moves a little bit too close to the angel. Kyungsoo shifts from his position, not wanting to be touched by the horrid creature.

“Don’t avoid me, Kyungsoo. I just want to tell you something. I want you to know the truth.” The angel trembles in fear, he closes his eyes and prays. Father, please help me. Father. Father…

“Stop praying. It won’t do you any good. He doesn’t care about you. He threw you out to this world and never cared about what’s happening to you. Well, I can’t blame him. He still has a lot of angels who’s less stubborn and hardheaded. You’re nothing to Him.”

Shut up! Kyungsoo wanted to shout and scream and kick the devil away from him but he couldn’t move. The devil smiles mockingly at him and it made him angry.

“Your Father didn’t even tell you the easier way to bring Kai back to heaven.” With that, Kyungsoo stops. He looks at Chanyeol with doubt, he stared at him long enough to wait for a hint of lying.

“If I kill Jongin, his soul will be mine. But if you’re the one who ends his life, then he’ll be yours. You can send him back to heaven with you.”

*****

Sehun lands in front of a small apartment building. He scans his surroundings, trying to feel Kyungsoo’s presence but he found nothing. He tried looking for the angel that Kyungsoo’s supposed to rescue, but the outcome was the same. They’re both not anywhere near this place. The young angel sighs and flies away.

“Another angel, eh?” Chanyeol grins like the devil he truly is and disappears in a form of an acrid smoke.

*****

“Why did you take me here, hyung?” Jongin looks around him. There was nothing but trees and flowers, the place basically looked like some kind of paradise and Jongin couldn’t help but smile.

On the other hand, Kyungsoo’s hands were shaking. He couldn’t even smile back at Jongin. He couldn’t even stomach to look at him.

“Hyung?” Jongin’s voice sounded so kind and Kyungsoo wanted to stop this. Kyungsoo wanted to run and he was just about to do it when Jongin holds his hand.

“Are you okay? You look so pale.” The younger boy looked so concerned and worried.

“I’m fine, Jongin. Just a little bit tired, don’t worry.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes I’m sure. Don’t worry too much.”

“I just don’t want you to be sick. It’ll be lonely and I don’t want to eat something bad.”

“Shut up.”

Little did Jongin know that behind him, Kyungsoo carries a golden dagger meant to be used to end his life.

*****

“Hyung, did you remember when you asked me about Heaven?” Kyungsoo was taken aback with Jongin’s question. Asking it out of the blue really surprised the elder.

“What about that?”

“I just thought about that these past few days. Heaven, I mean. I dreamt of having a pair of very beautiful wings and it felt… wonderful – like I was in heaven as I flap those wings. I want to go to heaven, hyung.” If Kyungsoo’s eyes could get any bigger, then it did. He was not just surprised, he was shocked. Yes he knows that Jongin dreams of being an angel but he didn’t know that those dreams will make the younger want to go back to Paradise.

“Are you sure about that?”

“Yes, I am. If suicide’s not a sin then I would have done it by now. I don’t know why but I suddenly had this obsession of going to heaven. I swear I’m sane, just obsessed.”

“You want to go to heaven, eh?” The evil was starting to take over Kyungsoo. His eyes started becoming darker and his hands started reaching for the dagger.

I’ll do it, Jongin. I’ll bring you to heaven.

“Hyung? Kyungsoo hyung? What’s that for?”

“Hyung?”

I’ll help you, Jongin.

“Kyungsoo! What are you doing?! Stop that!”

*****

“Where have you been?” Sehun asks the angel who recently came back. The angel showed no emotion, just looked at Sehun directly at the eye and answered, “His graduation.”

“Oh.” That was Sehun’s only answer and he lets Kyungsoo walk away. Sehun was seriously sad about the change in Kyungsoo but he couldn’t do anything about it.

“What’s wrong?” Yixing appears behind Sehun but the younger angel didn’t flinch. He was just plainly gloomy.

“It’s still foreign to me – being with someone with no emotions, I mean. I was so used to the stubborn Kyungsoo that seeing him like this pains me.”

“We can’t do anything about this.” Yixing says in a melancholic voice, he understands the feeling of being with someone who suddenly becomes a stranger. Kyungsoo changed – he was changed.

“Is it a rightful punishment?  I mean, yeah, I understand the demotion. But why that? Why do they have to rid him of all emotions and feelings?”

“Everything He does is just. He removed all emotions and feelings from Kyungsoo because those made him like this. He is just, Sehun. He made it easier for Kyungsoo. He removed him from everyone’s memories – from Jongin’s memories.”

“But then, why was he assigned to be Jongin’s guardian angel?”

“That, I don’t understand. We can never know how His mind works.”

*****

“Where are we?” Yixing asks the young angel beside him.

“We’re watching Kyungsoo guard Jongin.” Sehun says, still looking intently at his angel friend from afar.

“What? Don’t tell me you don’t trust him– ”

“It’s not that, I was hoping for a reaction – an emotion.”

“Why? Why here? Why now?”

“Jongin will be asking that girl to be his girlfriend.”

“Oh.”

Sehun watched Kyungsoo as he sat there, staring. But Kyungsoo didn’t do anything.

He just sat there. He didn’t say anything. He didn’t even move. He only stared.

“Where are we?” Yixing asks once again.

“Jongin’s birthday party.”

“Why here? Why now?”

“Maybe now, Kyungsoo will feel something.”

But no. Kyungsoo just sat there. He didn’t say anything. He didn’t even move. He only stared.

“What’s the special occasion now?” Yixing need not to ask where they were, he knows they’re somewhere related to Jongin.

“Jongin will finally be able to achieve his dream. Kyungsoo wanted him to be successful one day.”

But unfortunately, Kyungsoo just sat there. He didn’t say anything. He didn’t even move. He only stared.

“Why are we in church?”

“It’s… It’s Jongin’s wedding today.”

“Oh.”

The angels watched as the two humans exchange their vows. They watched Jongin swore that he’ll love the girl until his death. They watched as Jongin completely drifts away from Kyungsoo.

Sehun looks at Kyungsoo. He wasn’t saying anything. He wasn’t even moving. But there’s no mistaking it, he was crying.

Sehun smiles.

“Sehun, don’t tell me…”

“Yes. It’s Jongin’s funeral.”

“Oh.”

Sehun turned to look at Kyungsoo who was sitting there, smiling and laughing like the way he used to.

Beside him was Kai.
