Thank you for checking out my story. Besides showing my inmense gratitude to you, readers, I also wanted to warn you that this foreword might be confusing, and a bit misleading, because: a) This story is light-hearted; definitely not angsty, which is what this prologue (you could say) sort of portrays. b) I used some made-up terms that are just mentioned in this section, but will be explained soon in future chapters.

Other than that, I hope you enjoy! Don't feel shy, if there's anything you'd wish me to change (perhaps, chapter length? Font?) or check (too many spelling or grammar errors?), feel free to tell me.

Now, enjoy!

Foreword

August 1945.

"Your mother is going to kill us once she finds out we're here," Seohyun whispered, trying to find her brest friend among the spaceous, dark kitchen. She heard the refrigerator open, and instantly spotted the light reflecting from its inside, dully brightening the room. She could see Yoona's silhouette, her dark, long hair cascading down her frail, skinny shoulders.

"Well, she starves me during the day, she expects me to starve during the night too?" Yoona responded, getting out a loaf of bread. The sound of clattering, fine teapots could be heard from the living room next door.

"Speak a bit lower, the Heads are at the living room having some tea," Seohyun warned her friend, stealthily heading toward her. She tried to take away the bread. "She's doing it for your own good."

"She forced me into a diet because she thinks carbohydrates are the reason why my powers are weaking," Yoona explained, retrieving the soft, cushiony bread before wrapping it in a plaid-patterned cloth. She opened the drawer, getting out the large radio an assistant had brought. "Want to hear how the war is going?"

"No... I hate hearing about death and suffering. You know that," Seohyun replied, nervously checking the entrance of the kitchen to the living room, fearing to see either Lady Seo or Lady Jun walking in to scold them. Lady Jihyo, the kindest head, was out running an errand, so nobody would be there to calm the other Heads down once their ranting began.

Yoona heard both ladies laugh about something. She couldn't help but smile. "They're probably laughing about something like: 'Oh, did you see my daughter earlier in breakfast? She used the butter knife to cut the bread! How silly!'"

Seohyun couldn't help but giggle. As a descendant of the first Powerful's best friend, she felt an inmense sense of loyalty to any girl of the race. But that didn't mean she couldn't laugh at their occasionally foolish antics. "I can actually imagine that."

Before Yoona could continue with her sarcastic remarks, they heard the double entrance doors loudly open. Confused words from Lady Seo and Jun echoed before the bell by the kitchen door was loudly pounded —a sign of danger. Seohyun could feel how the once jolly environment was now filled with tension, and quickly ran out.

Yoona stuffed the radio and bread under her night cardigan before following Seohyun out the kitchen and into the living room.

"The EXO military base has been attacked," Jihyo breathed out, trying to keep her nervousness from showing in her voice. One of the assistants showed up, and Jihyo ordered her to go wake the girls up and to evacuate them to the mahogany forest surrounding them.

"Jihyo, what is going on? Why are you telling them to evacuate?" Lady Seo stammered out, her usually calm eyes widened in fear.

"The Red Capes killed over half of the EXO boys and framed us for it. In no time, the survivors will come pounding down our walls in search for revenge... a bloodshed," Jihyo explained, grabbing the three coats for each head and handing them out. "We need to create a gravitational force wall in the front of the mansion so that the girls can safely get out through the back."

"What the hell are the Red Capes?" Lady Jun asked, before stretching out both of her hands and strengthening Seo's wall, which had been created at the very instant Jihyo asked for it.

"The trainee who escaped... Tiffany... she resorted to black magic to strengthen her powers, and has recruited a group of young girls to join her club —the Red Capes," Jihyo said, contributting to the gravitational force with her own abilities. "They need blood to keep their powers strong."

"Mother, what's going on?" Yoona asked, emerging from her hiding place near a drawer holding gifts from previous Powerful graduates.

"Yoona, what on Earth-" Lady Seo stopped herself, taking in a deep breath. "Just get out and-"

A scream echoed from the second floor, followed by a set of shots and shouts of men.

Lady Seo's face paled. "They've infiltrated from the roof... quick, we need to go and save the girls!"

The heads let go of their positions, and as soon as they did, the wall disappeared, allowing a large group of EXO boys to send the entire front of the house crumbling down.

Seohyun screamed as dust and wood enveloped Yoona and her. An army of EXO boys marched in, levitating decorational items and crashing them against the walls, as well as setting cloths and furniture on fire. Chaos ensued. Yoona could see her fellow trainees running down the stairs, trying to escape. She loudly sobbed out as one of them was shot on the back.

"Mom!" Yoona screamed, as soon as she saw Lady Seo run to the hoard of enraged man, who were savaging everything in their way to revenge. Yoona whimpered out. "Mother!"

"Yoona, Seohyun, leave!" she exclaimed, sending a gust of air to push away a couple of EXO men running after both fifteen-year-olds.

Seohyun loved Lady Seo as her own mother —she'd given her a home, she'd given her love... and she felt an inmense sense of gratitude toward her. The only way to thank Lady Seo for everything was by saving her daughter, even if it meant that she'd possibly never see Lady Seo again. Before Yoona could run into the battlefield and try to save her mother, Seohyun grabbed her wrist, and pulled the frail girl out to safety.

"Let me go!" the girl tearfully screamed, trying to keep Seohyun from dragging her along. "Aren't we superheroes? I know I'm weak, but at least let me pretend to be a hero by staying by their side!"

Seohyun, as much as she wanted to run back and stick by the only friends she'd ever known, simply kept running, ignoring Yoona's desperate requests.

Shots were fired swifter. The EXO military unit's rage increased by the second. The screams of the Powerfuls got louder and more fearful. But Seohyun and Yoona were already deep in the forest, safe from it all, and permanently separated from those they loved.
