Divide

Description

Teaser

I remember looking at him, I remember the rain and the cold water against my skin, I remember the barrier between us, between our cities. I know that if I didn’t have the courage to do what I did, I wouldn’t have met him. And I also remember the lights that were half lit that night, I remember the dark alley and the faint footsteps of the people chasing us, chasing something surreal to them, something out of their reach.

I remember the rain, and the wind that was blowing despite the already cold air in mid-winter, it hadn’t even snowed and yet the cold had settled in throughout the area. I ran as fast as I could but my feet went numb, my vision was a blur and the last thing I see before all things turned black was his face, a face so distinguished unfamiliar.

"Kai”, his name slipped out of my mouth so easily as if I had been waiting all my life to say it.

Foreword

Prologue

Standing in front of me was a tall lean boy with short hair and an appealing figure. I remembered his eyes, and how stern they were when looking at mine.

“You’re not supposed to be here”, he held me by the arms as his eyes observed me. My breath was uneven and unsteady like it’s about to leave anytime, his grips tightened around me like he knew how fragile my body was at that time, he kept me from falling.

When I regained my balance I stepped away from him just enough for him to release his grip. I steadied my hand on my chest, as well steadying my heartbeat. His eyes are guarded while observing my whole being, looking at me warily. I caught his crimson dark eyes not demanding attention but a simple gesture to ensure him I could do no harm, at least not physically. But he stood still with his eyes over mine, still guarded and somehow curious.

Without any warnings, he caught my arm again and brought it over to him slowly while carefully moving my hair that was covering the side of my neck. He brushed his fingers on it as his eyes met mine, “You’re a Commoner”, his voice was deep and low almost sounded like a whisper.

I didn’t say anything instead I warded off his hands away from mine and took a step back giving us the same space as before.

“L-let me go…”, I struggled to get out of his unwanted grip.

He stepped closer toward me and touch my neck again, just a faint brush of his finger and I felt pain; it’s like burning inside my throat. I saw his right wrist as a mark appeared on it; a half-circle like the moon.

I held my breath for a split second and his touch left my neck.  His black eyes turned crimson red and my vision changed suddenly, everything went clearer and brighter; as if the sun just shone down the earth. The scent of the rain mixed with dirt sneaked to my nose, a scent I am not familiar yet. I looked back and saw the barrier between the two cities but couldn’t see through it.

Kai” , and after that everything went black
