Soul Mates

Soul Mates

Mother told me that you’ll know who your soul mate is if the both of you have the same thoughts almost all the time, like you’re just sharing the same brain.

“I’m going to the park, umma! I’ll be home before six, do not worry!” Taeyeon shouted before she closed the door of the house. She then quickly walk to her bicycle and rode it, in hopes of finding the person she was longing for the whole day. The only destination in her mind is the park, where she first met Tiffany.

The girl let go of her bicycle and jumped off it, not caring if the poor vehicle dropped on the ground with a thud. The only thing in her mind, the only thing she cares for now is Tiffany, her best friend. Her soul mate

Taeyeon was flustered when she saw no signs of Tiffany, not even a single hair strand. She only saw families, couples and old people walking around or simply sitting on the ground, eating the contents of their own picnic basket

The short girl frowned and felt her heart slowing down. The hopes of seeing Tiffany disappeared into nothingness. Only the dark dust of sadness remained

“Taetae?” she heard the familiar husky voice and quickly turned around. Her eyes twinkled seeing the gentle black eyes and the cute white face matched with rosy cheeks. She noticed Tiffany having the similar twinkle in her eyes, the eyes were soft and she felt small under the gaze of her best friend.

The short girl found her voice and opened “F-Fany-ah~” she grunted when Tiffany pounced on her. She smiled in relief and quickly hugged the latter. Both hugging each other tightly

She heard Tiffany sniffing and felt the wetness on her shoulder. Tiffany was crying.

“Why do you think you’ll find me here?” she heard Tiffany’s muffled voice as the girl spoke against her shirt. They pulled away but not completely letting go of each other

Taeyeon smiled. “I guess its instincts,” she wiped the tear soaked cheeks with her palms, “Why did you come here?”

Tiffany sniffed “My instincts told me that a babo will come looking for me and willing to stay here for the rest of the night because she’s waiting for me,” she smiled “And of course being a good best friend, I don’t want the babo to wait and hope for nothing so I came to see her.”

Taeyeon smiled “Thank you and Sorry”

“You’re welcome and you’re forgiven…”

Taeyeon waited and shook her head “If…?” she asked

Tiffany grinned and continued “If you’ll buy me a bucket of ice cream tomorrow,”

“Aw, okay fine.”

“Don’t worry I’ll share with you.”

“Yay!”

--

Mother said that your soul mate already knows what you need or want even if you’re not saying anything

Tiffany laughed at her friend’s flimsy act in front. She was calmly walking beside Taeyeon who was watching the scene with a small smile on her face

“Hey you kids, hurry up, it’s cold!” Sooyoung shouted from the front, her nose pink.

“Yeah! Sooyoung’s going to turn into one of Santa’s deer if you don’t hurry up!” Yuri laughed out loud with her other friends

Sooyoung smirked, unaffected “Yuri’s no longer tan! We should hurry before she beats Taeyeon’s natural pale skin!”

“You want a piece of me, huh, glutton?!”

“Bring it on black pole!”

“Why are you guys so noisy in the morning?!” Jessica snapped

“Where’s your Christmas spirit, Sica?! Wake your soul up!!! It’s Christmas!”

“It’s 24th today. Technically it’s the day before Christmas.”

“Oh come on! You know what I’m saying...” Yuri’s continuous blabber about Christmas spirit was ignored by Tiffany as she diverted her attention to the silent girl beside her

“What’s the problem Taetae, still sleepy?” Tiffany asked with furrowed eyebrows, feeling guilty as she knows that she dragged the tired girl out of the dorm

Taeyeon looked at her and shook her head “N-No. I’ve had enough rest and I miss those kids too so don’t feel guilty, okay?” she smiled

“Then why are you so quiet?”

“I’m normally quiet Fany-ah. Let’s continue watching the free show, shall we?” the short girl grinned and looked ahead of them

Tiffany was still staring at her best friend then her eyes dropped on the pale bare hands. She gasped and quickly took off the glove on her right hand and handed it to Taeyeon.

“What?” asked Taeyeon, raising an eyebrow at her friend, who was eagerly handing her the right pair of pink colored glove

Tiffany only nudged the object at her, “What?” Taeyeon repeated

The owner of the item rolled her eyes and took her best friends right hand, slipping Taeyeon’s cold bare hand into the glove and holding the left hand with her right bare hand

“What are you doing?” Taeyeon asked when Tiffany intertwined their fingers and put it inside her jacket’s pocket.

“You should’ve told me that you were feeling cold,” Tiffany nagged

Taeyeon smiled “Why should I bother telling you about it when you knew?”

“I could’ve lent my right glove to you earlier so you won’t feel cold like this!” frowned Tiffany as she felt the chilly hand enveloped her own,

“Okay, okay. Sorry. Stop frowning Miyoung-ah you might resemble the grumpy elf of Snow White!”

“Yah!”

“Now you look exactly like Snow White’s witch.”

“Kim Taeyeon!”

But for me, my soul mate is the person that I spent half of my life with

“Taetae, isn’t this our picture when we were three years old?” Tiffany asked as she pointed at a picture containing a little girl with pink raincoat grinning proudly under the rain, a dimple on her chin. Beside the former is another little girl, slightly taller than the girl in pink coat, eyes curved down and a cute grin attached to her face, she was wearing a blue raincoat while her arms stretched upwards

Taeyeon lay beside Tiffany and propped her chin. She frowned “I don’t think so, I think we were five that time, I remembered having a oo on my knee after we took that picture,” she turned to the girl who was staring at their pictures. She knew Tiffany was reminiscing, “You clumsily flailed your arms like a foolish bird and pushed me in the process of ‘flying’.”

Tiffany smiled. The same smile as the little girl in the blue raincoat in the picture they were scrutinizing. “Oh right, you were crying for umma after that” she clapped her hands

“You’re delighted that I had a oo?!”

“No! But you were just too cute crying like that, you look like a puppy, Taetae!” she snickered “Puppyeon.”

“Yah! That nickname was so old! It was like, seven years ago!” Taeyeon pouted. “I must use it again!” Tiffany smirked “My puppyeon~!”

Taeyeon rolled her eyes “In that case I must call you Mushroom once again”

A groan “Whatever Taeyeon-ah”

--

And we share the same feelings

The sound of the people chattering faded in the empty church as they went on their respective seat. Waiting for the arrival of the bride

Taeyeon turned to the lady behind her. She gulped, “Are you ready, Fany-ah?”

Tiffany looked up and nodded, the pair of sad glistening eyes saddened her more “Y-Yes” she stuttered

“Okay, good. We’ll be out in five minutes. Where’s your bouquet?” Taeyeon frantically searched for the bundle of pink flowers in the room.

“Taetae…”

Taeyeon ignored it and bit her tongue to keep her tears at bay.

“Taeyeon-ah,” Tiffany’s wavering voice made Taeyeon stopped her search for the flowers. She turned to the bride who was looking at her with teary eyes

Tiffany hugged Taeyeon, “I’m so sorry.” She sobbed

Taeyeon shook her head and pulled away, she wiped the tears on Tiffany’s cheeks. Feeling her heart ache more seeing Tiffany cry because of her

“No, don’t be. You’re happy with him, right?” Taeyeon asked, she prepared her heart

Tiffany gulped, hesitant to answer the question knowing she’s going to hurt Taeyeon more.

“Right?” Taeyeon urged and Tiffany nodded slowly

The short girl felt her heart breaking once again. She felt numb but she smiled. She smiled to make Tiffany feel better “Then I’m happy.”

As they continue on staring, she wonders if Tiffany can see the expression said by , the words said by her eyes and the true meaning of her smile.

“Stay happy, Fany-ah”

And lastly, that soul mate is the person I can never have.

Taeyeon watches Tiffany walked down the aisle, her arms linked to her father who was smiling sadly

She could hear Tiffany sobbing even from far away, even if she’s sobbing quietly. She knows the tears weren’t happy.

Taeyeon wanted to disappear from the church, not because she would see her soul mate marrying someone else but because she’s burdening her very own soul mate. But she has to be there. To prove Tiffany that it’s fine. They’ll be okay.

The couple in front exchanged vows and kissed. Tiffany looked at her guiltily but Taeyeon smiled. She knew she lost her when she saw Tiffany’s eyes twinkling when she was looking at him the first time.

Tiffany finally smiles, a happy one.

Taeyeon’s heart was free.

“If you’re happy, then I’m happy.”
