I Promise

I Promise

“Yeol?”

“Hmm?”

“What are we doing?”

“Eating.?”

“No. I mean what are we doing with our lives. We ran away to Seoul with no plan and very little money, and now we’re barely getting by. Why are we even doing this anymore? It’s been two years don’t you think we should move on from a dream that’s never going to happen and get real jobs instead of just scraping by every month.”

“We’re living. That’s what we’re doing. We’re living out experiences and doing what we can.”

“Is an experience really worth that much? Is it worth starving for two years and not knowing where we’re gonna sleep half the time?”

“I know you were hesitant to do this to begin with but I promised you we’d make it, I promised you a big apartment with a beautiful view and tons of fans and records to no end, but I haven’t given it to you yet and I’m still trying to work in order to give that to you. I love you too much to just let all the promises I gave you turn into lies, I can’t do that not to you.”

Chanyeol raised his hand to Lay’s face and pulled him in closer and gave him a peck on the lips. after pulling away he sent a sad smile to him and brought Lay’s face to the crook of his neck.

“Just give this a little more time. I promise this time we’ll make it. We’ll become famous.”

It’d been two weeks since that conversation and nothing had changed, Lay still wanted to just go back to a normal life but Chanyeol was not willing to turn himself into a liar and let everything he promised Lay go to waste. Chanyeol went to an audition that he had been telling Lay for a while, much like all the other auditions he’d gone to he expected to get a callback but not actually get a contract. He went and he sang with everything he had in him the whole time thinking of Lay and wanting to make all his empty promises become a reality.  Once the song ended they asked him if he could do anything else and he said he could play different instruments as well. They nodded their heads in acknowledgement and told him to wait in the waiting room with everyone else. Once the auditions were done they had posted the names of the people who had to come back the next day again. Chanyeol walked up to the list last and just as he had predicted he got a callback.

The next day Chanyeol woke up early with Lay in his arms. He saw him shift once he moved away from him trying to retrieve the lost warmth from Chanyeol. He opened his eyes and asked him what was wrong.

“I got a call back. I promise, this is it.”

Lay looked at him with sadness in his eyes and a sad smile on his lips. Those were the exact words that Chanyeol said every single time.  He stayed in bed looking at Chanyeol move around the small studio. Once Chanyeol was done getting ready and was about to leave he returned to Lay on the bed and laid on top of him, with his hands around him he looked into his eyes and then leaned in to kiss him goodbye.

“I promise; I feel really good about this company, if it fails with this company, we’ll go back. I’ll apologize to my parents and we’ll go back to how we were.”

Lay smiled up at him and brought his arms around Chanyeols neck and kissed him languidly. Once they pulled apart Lay their smiling up at Chanyeol.

“I’ll wait. If not with this one then I’ll wait for the next one, and then again if not them then the next one. I’m sorry about what I said a couple weeks ago. I’m just tired of seeing you so disappointed; I want you to be happy. I want us to just stay together. Now go, or else you’ll be late.”

He pushed Chanyeol away from him as he sat up but was stopped from getting up by Chanyeol capturing his lips in a quick goodbye kiss. Once their lips parted he saw Chanyeol moving away from him and heading out the door a second later. He moved towards their small kitchen section grabbed a piece of fruit to eat. Once he was done eating he started getting ready to go to work. It didn’t pay a lot and that’s why most of the time they were barely getting by but most of the time they were happy with what they had.

Chanyeol reached the building that they were holding the auditions in and he signed in and everything. He brought along his guitar with him just in case. As all the others went ahead of him he grew more and more nervous not wanting to mess this up, not for him but for Lay. This was it, it was now or never. He had meant what he said to Lay that morning, even if Lay had denied him. His name was called and he waltzed into the room with as much confidence as he could muster and held his head up high hoping for the best. When he walked out of the room he came out dazzling. He was offered to go on to the next stage of the audition which was to meet them to talk about a contract. He did it. He actually did it. He was going to make all his promises come true.

On his way home he decided to pick up Lay from work. He stopped at the restaurant that he worked at and asked for a table for two knowing he’d get off in no more than ten minutes. Once Lay walked out of the back room he saw Chanyeol sitting at one of the tables. He walked up to him from behind wanting to scare him but was met with Chanyeol jumping up from his chair and embracing him before he could do anything.

“What are you doing here?”

“Just came to pick you up. Can’t I pick you up?”

“Yeah, but why aren’t you at the audition? They usually take all day.”

“They only called back six people.”

“Oh, okay. Let’s go. I’m so tired and hungry”

“You work in a restaurant and you’re hungry?”

“I smell delicious food all day, I get hungry okay.”

“Okay then, let’s eat.”

“Huh?”

“Anything you want you can have.”

“Babe, we can’t afford to eat out. You know that. All the bills are paid but we still need to pay for the studio for this month.”

“We can, we can eat out every single day for the rest of our lives.”

“What are you talking about?”

“They want to sign a contract with me. I did it. I’m going to the main office tomorrow to discuss the contract specifics but they want to sign me for a five year contract.”

Lay stared at him with disbelief in his eyes but happiness in his smile. He waited and it had paid off. After everything finally registered in his mind he began to cry and pulled Chanyeol into a bone crushing embrace. Chanyeol could hear Lay’s sniffles and he didn’t know what came over him but the tears started to flow and he couldn’t help it.

“So what do you want to eat? My treat.”

“Budae jjigae.”

“Really? That’s it?”

“I don’t need a fancy meal to be satisfied, especially when I’m with you.”

Chanyeol laughed a little and wrapped his arm around Lay’s waist and led them towards the exit of the restaurant. They walked in silence on their way to a restaurant that they both knew sold really good Bundae jigae. Once they reached the restaurant they sat down and ordered their meal. Chanyeol reached his hand across the table to hold Lay’s hand and he could feel how warm they were.

“Do you know what they’re going to do with you?”

“No, I guess we’re going to be talking about it tomorrow.”

“Can you come with me, tomorrow I mean. I don’t want to make any rash decisions and I know that if you’re there with me I know I’ll think things through a lot more.”

“I’ll see if I can get tomorrow off and go with you.”

“What would I do without you?”

“I don’t know. And I don’t know what I’d do without you. I really don’t.”

“I do. I know that you’d be so much happier than you are now, and you’d be far better off than you are being with me.”

“Don’t say that. I made the choice to come with you and leave my family. I am happy, I’m happy to be alive and I’m happy that I can at least come home and know that you’re there waiting or you’ll be home a little later. I know that, and that alone makes me happy. I love you and you love me and that’s all that matters to me.”

Chanyeol continued playing with Lay’s fingers across the table and smiles knowing that Lay was happy even when they were in this kind of situation. Their food arrived and they started to eat. They ate until they felt like they were about to explode and then still ate even more. Once they finished eating Chanyeol, as promised, paid for the meal and left to go home.  They walked in silence, their hands swinging back and forth between them. When they reached their studio they walked in and dropped their bags at the entrance and walked to their bed and laid down and looked out the window.

“Baby,”

“Hmm”

“Now that I’ve made half of my promises come true, can you promise me something?”

“Sure.”

“Promise me that you’ll marry me someday.”

Lay looked up at Chanyeol with excitement in his eyes and happiness.

“Is this your proposal to me?”

“No, this is a promise. Remember you can’t break a promise once it’s made, a proposal can be denied, a promise is forever.”

Lay’s smile finally reached his eyes and he sat up and looked down at Chaneyol who was still lying down. He moved to straddle Changyeol and bent down to capture him in a kiss. He stopped kissing him but never really leaving his lips he replied with a smile on his lips. “I promise.”
