Proposal

Always Been You
It’s been a week since Audrey’s been saved. She was still quite shaken up from what happened, especially of going out alone, but Dave’s been there the whole time, taking one step at a time with her. She couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed. She knew deep down in her heart her hero wasn’t by her side.

Audrey was in her bedroom, combing through her silky hair when Dave walked in. She caught his reflection in the mirror and she paused looking at him, smiling.

“Are you going out?” He asked, staring at the clothes she was wearing.

“I can’t stay inside all day. The wounds have to heal sometime.” She answered.

He looked concerned and walked closer, “I don’t know if that’s such a good idea. I mean, they might’ve been caught, but maybe you should stay a while longer and heal more.”

Audrey shook her head, “It’s time to move on, Dave.” She wasn’t just speaking about going out and facing her fears anymore. “I already packed my stuff. There’s no need to stay in this house anymore. I’m moving back with aunt.”

Dave didn’t answer; he couldn’t help but feel his heart breaking at the sound of those words.

She put her hand on top of his, “You know this has been coming. As much as I’m grateful for what you did for me, I’m still the same girl who wants the same things. And I’m sorry for saying this but the annulment is what I still want, Dave.”

“There’s no need for it,” she heard him say after a couple of silent minutes. “It wasn’t real, Audrey.” Her eyes widened at his admission. “The wedding, Mamita hired a fake judge, and my Mom paid for a fake marriage certificate. There was no marriage.”

For some reason she wasn’t angry, just confused. “But…you said….”

“I know, and it was only because I wanted you. I needed to stay with me, I only wanted you.” He said. “But after I saw you getting hurt by my mother’s action and then getting shot and you getting kidnapped…I now realize that I’d rather you be happy with someone else than you being miserable with me.”

She smiled, “You’re not always going to be alone, Dave. There will be someone else. You’re going to find someone who’ll love you more than anything.” She squeezed his hand. “I want you to be happy, Dave. It’s just not going to be with me.” She stood up now, and wrapped her arms around him. “You will always be my first love, David Garcia. And I’ll be here if you need someone to talk to.” She kissed his cheek, and smiled at him with her brown eyes glistening. “Goodbye, Dave. I wish you all the best.” And then she was gone.

When she left the house, she felt a big burden being lifted off her shoulders. She let go of it in a big breath and felt so much lighter, happier. She now smiled. The sun was shining above her, and the familiar sounds of children running around and the sound of traffic filled her ears. The cool breeze along her face, it was a good day to make amends.

She walked along the side walk without any destination in mind, until his house came into view. The path she was taking took her here. She fidgeted with her fingers and put her hand on her chest. Audrey took another big breath before walking towards the door. She knocked, before he opened the door.

He looked older than the last time she’s seen him, but not less attractive. She smiled when she saw him. “Audrey,” he breathed.

“I was walking and I somehow ended up here.” She said. “Can I come in?” She asked.

JR took a step to the side so she could enter. When she walked passed him, her familiar floral scent enveloped him. He took a breath to control himself. “What are you doing here? Won’t Dave be angry?” He leaned against a table and crossed his arms, creating a barrier between the two of them.

“I needed to go out, to start moving on with my life. I couldn’t stay trapped any longer.” She began pacing across the room and running her hands through on the objects around her. “But before I can do any of that, I need to…come to terms with what happened that night.” She paused. “I can remember most of it, but there’s this one part I’m confused about. Maybe you can help me?”

He met her gaze, “I’ll do my best.”

“I remember walking down the street, and then a hand coming around me and being dragged into a car. I remember it was Ramon, Greta and Nico. I remember she blamed me for what happened, she thought I betrayed her by telling the police. I told her I wasn’t the one; I told her I only told you, and then they blind folded me and left with the bomb right beside me.” She explained.

“But you were saved, you’re okay. Ramon and Nico are being punished so…everything will be okay.” He said.

She smiled, “That’s not what I’m worried about. The last thing I remember is someone standing beside me. I assume cutting the bomb off and then untying me feet, touching my face,” her voice broke, “and then taking the rope out of my mouth.” She turned to face him. “And then I saw Dave, and he brought me home.”

“He’s a hero.” JR commented with his insides churning.

Audrey smiled, “But not mine. It was you, wasn’t it? That night, when you found me.” Her voice quivered. “It was you. You saved my life, again, and let Dave take credit for it, again. Why did you do that?”

“Because he loves you.” JR answered, his eyes now shimmering with moisture. He didn’t look at her.

“But I don’t love him. I knew it was you.” She was now in front of him, touching his face, and began crying. She cried too. “I was praying for you to find me, I was praying for you. I wanted no one else.”

She touched his forehead with her, and took his hands, intertwining their fingers. “How did we get here? How did we come this far?” She asked rhetorically.

“I wanted it to be me, always.” He whispered.

She looked at him and put her hand over her heart. She took her necklace out and held it in her hand, “It’s always been you.” She opened her palm and showed what she’s been hiding for a long time. It was the engagement ring he gave her.

He cupped her face and pressed his lips against hers. She put her hands on his waist and kissed him back. She was the one who separated them, and looked up at him. “I love you,” she said.

“I love you so much,” he said smiling. He managed to take off the ring and held it in his hands. “Would it be okay if I put it back on?” He laughed.

She laughed at how nervous he was, “I’ve been wanting you to do that for a really long time.” She said, her heart racing in her chest.

He smiled, and kissed her again before sliding it on her finger.
