The Torch Bearer (ft. Baekhyun)

“Oh ,” you murmured under your breath as the lights illuminating your street shuddered, flickered and then finally cut out. “Not again…” you sighed, pausing for a moment to try to get your bearings again. Your neighbourhood was a rough part of town, and basic things like electricity were bound to falter every now and then. Normally, you’d be prepared with a flashlight in your purse, but seeing as you’d quickly rushed out of the house at 2am to get medications for your little sister, you hadn’t been prepared this time around. Feeling a jolt of anxiety within you, you slowly began to walk down the street, trying desperately to make your way purely through memory, now that you had lost almost all sight. The fact that this wasn’t a particularly safe suburb either had you extra nervous about getting home safely. You noticed a flicker of light in a nearby apartment and heard a distant cheer as someone’s lights seemed to start working again in their house. You stared up at the apartment, puzzled for a moment at how one person had managed to get their light back but the rest of the neighbourhood was still shrouded in darkness. You became even more confused when a handful of other windows also began beaming out light, as more and more people’s electricity seemed to flicker back on. Trying to shake off the distraction and just get straight home, you continued on the dark path back to your house. Just as you were passing a street light, it flickered back into life, startling you a little. You were grateful for this small light source, but realised that it wouldn’t help much if only one street light on your way home was illuminated. As soon as you had this thought and passed another streetlight, it too came back to life. This kept on happening on your whole walk home: right as soon as you were about to approach a street light, it … almost as if it was turning on just for you. You couldn’t help but smile as you saw your house in the distance: you’d made it back home and could hopefully ease your sister’s illness with the medications that you’d bought. Right before you began walking down the driveway to your front door, your peripheral vision picked up on a person’s figure quickly ducking behind a tree. What had made him easy to spot was that somehow, he seemed to emanate a faint glow.

“H-hey? I saw you,” you called out, trying your best to calm your shaking voice.

Had this guy followed you home? You nervously inched around to where he was hiding, not sure if you wanted to confront this guy or not. Your mouth dropped open ever so slightly when you saw the young man leaning against the tree, panting ever so slightly at the rush of getting caught by you. His cuteness and excited expression somehow reminded you of a puppy, slightly calming you down with his adorableness.

“Er, hi…” he smiled sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck with one hand. That’s when you noticed what was different about him. He didn’t just have a glowing smile or bright eyes: his very hands were shining. You gaped and gestured dumbly at his hands, not sure whether to react with shock or amazement.

Baekhyun chuckled lowly, amused at your reaction.

“Oh these?” he said casually, stretching out his slender hands so you could see the faint glow still radiating from them. “I dunno, I’ve heard the electricity cuts out here a lot?”

You nodded, trying to understand where his story was going.

“So yeah, I thought I’d come down sometimes and at least try to get the lights working again… and it was perfect timing for me today because there you were, adorable and confused in the dark…” he smiled down at you, instantly making you blush. “So I thought I could help you home without being spotted but I guess ah… I had to let myself be caught by you so I could actually speak to you tonight,” he explained, a hint of nervousness showing as he bit his lower lip, waiting for your reaction to his slightly creepy actions.

Oh, you thought. So that’s why he didn’t try to run away from me. You continued staring up at him, trying to process who this boy even was.

“I’m-I’m Baekhyun,” he began, lifting a beautiful hand for you to shake.

You accepted his hand, shaking it softly, amazed at the warmth it radiated, and shyly introduced yourself.

“Great!” he beamed, seeming satisfied with his success. “Er, by the way, you wouldn’t happen to know where the nearest taxi rank is or something? I don’t really live around here but when I heard the electricity cut out again…” he trailed off, hoping that you’d know some way for him to get home.

A smile played on your lips as an idea struck you, and you lightly took Baekhyun’s hand, startling him yet also pleasing him at the same time.

“Stay the night,” you suggested simply.

Not only did Baekhyun possess the power of light, he couldn’t help but emit light through his personality. Your sister’s illness was quickly forgotten thanks to how uplifting and cheery he was, taking her mind off the pain so well that she didn’t even need the meds. The three of you fell asleep late into the night after much laughter. You were the first to wake up in the morning, and as you entered the living room and saw Baekhyun still sleeping on the couch, you couldn’t help but break into a smile. Even when asleep, a kind of pure glow came from him. This, however, was different to his supernatural power… this was just a result of Baekhyun’s naturally bright spirit. The almost angelic looking boy slightly drooling with his mouth open was someone special, you decided, glad that you had invited him inside for the night.
