He walks down the old street, boots falling heavily on the cobbled stones.
one,
two.
Shadows from his past zip past him,
a shrieking boy:
''Don't step on the cracks, Krissy! They'll eat you!''
A tall boy, a short boy, running down the road hand in hand, both with hair dark as night and sparkling bright eyes.
Leaping and twirling over the tiles, never once letting go.
''Don't be stupid, Dae, what's going to eat me?''
Now they're older, one's blonde now, slicked back into a ponytail, just how he likes it.
Where's the other?
They were once as thick as thieves.
three,
four.
A cheshire cat grin.
Two water guns,
and two boys perched in their math teacher's backyard.
"Come on Kris, or are you too much of a wuss?''
The image of their teacher, red in the face, yelling like a banshee flickers into his mind.
He's almost tempted to back out, to live to see another day,
but those glittering eyes kept him.
"No way, of course i'll do it."
The grin grows just the slightest bit larger.
The blond doesn't know where his friend is now.
He wish he did.
five,
six
"Kris, have you ever kissed anyone?"
"Hmm?"
He's distracted,
too distracted by crinkled eyes and upturned lips.
"Kris?"
When did he get this close?
He could count each eyelash if he wanted to.
"Kris what are you doing-"
His lips are just as soft as he thought they'd be.
He still remembers how soft they were, the first time they touched.
And the next time, and the next time, and the next...
seven,
eight
"So... this is goodbye?"
Kris has plane tickets in his hand.
He's going,
back,
to his parent's homeland.
Someplace,
someplace where jongdae won't be.
"I- I'll miss you."
He picks up his suitcase and turns away to the honking taxi,
not wanting to face the glossy eyes behind him.
Stupid stupid stupid. Why didn't you tell him?
Why didn't you tell him,
"I love you"
when you could?
nine,
ten
Oh look,
here's the old swing set they used to play on,
here's the old dirt path they used to run on,
here's the old coffee shop they spent long afternoons at,
once upon a time.
But wait, what's this?
There's that pretty chestnut hair,
tucked under a cozy beanie.
There's that kittenish smile,
smiling through a cloud of coffee steam.
There's ten slender fingers,
wrapped snugly around a cup of coffee.
There's that slim body,
tucked so close to another's heat.
"Jongdae, will you marry me?"
Two things fall to the ground.
A cup of coffee,
and a beating heart.
"Yes, oh my god, yes!"
There's a puddle of coffee on the floor,
and one broken heart.
here have a puddle of self indulgence ;;
