Foreword

Zelo glanced up, the ship casting shadows along the port. It looked regular in comparison to his expectations, though no less wonderful. The hull was coated in maroon paint and was oddly shaped – a layered and flat, thin deck. A small chimney was constructed near the end of the ship.

The sea continued to curve in repetitive tides, rising and dropping in a erratic manner. Even with the heavy waves, the ship barely moved.

It looked too solid, as if it was a clay figure instead of a functioning ship, Zelo thought.

Other people on the wooden docks were surrounded with their families, and some were already leaving, lugging their bags up the staircase that led to the deck. He liked to study the people’s unpredictable expressions; they made him fascinated.

Waiting until all sailors had left the port, he sighed dreamily as the urge to come aboard beckoned him towards the ship.

He hesitated, contemplating his options and looked at his few belongings: a book, ragged clothes, and a couple letters of enrolment. With one deep breath, he ran up the staircase, eager to start.
