The Art of Racing in the Rain

Description

The truth about war is that it changes people. It changed Kai from a eager teenager to a serious, grieving man and it changed me too - into a violent one.

Foreword

The rain was quite unexpected.

It seemed like heaven itself was crying, damning all of us soldiers that were following orders that were never supposed to have been uttered. Tâi Vinh Village was destroyed. And amid it all, I saw her. Quiet – not a single tear on her eyes – and staring right at me. Beside her, an old woman and a little boy cried for a bloodied dead man, but she just stared with her dark, dark eyes.

The sad thing about war is that it changes people. A man who was considered very brave on his homeland may be rendered a coward on the battlefield, while someone who was thought of as cheater turns himself into a great soldier. And while war changes all of the people who participate in it, I can’t really see how exactly it changed me.

But maybe that is because I’m always so worried looking out for Kai.

This story joined Preordained Writing Contest and won FIRST PLACE. This contest was a real challenge for me, so I'm really glad about how the story turned out. I decided to do something very different and tried to write a war story - Hopefully it will be worthwhile.

The prompts asked will be shown at the end of the fic so it doesn't ruin the plot.

As always thanks to my dear friend callmephantom who did this wonderful poster and is the beta for this fic. She was the one who had to listen to all my ideas and she helped me a lot with the main ones for the plot. This story exists pretty much because of her.

War is a very difficult subject to write, but please bear in mind that I meant no disrespect to anyone. I did my best to make my characters believable and I hope to have succeeded. Please forgive any mistakes or offense this fic may cause.

All my reserch material for this fic will be listed at the end of the oneshot if you get curious to know more about how South Korea participated in the Vietnam War.

Finally, the title of this fic comes from the book "The Art of Racing in the Rain" by Garth Stein. The plot, however, is completly mine.

Chapter 1: I honestly wasn't expecting this to be honest. The story was really engaging from the get-go, and I really loved the way Kai's portrayed. Great job overall! :)

Chapter 1: reading things like this is beautifully heartbreaking </3 thank you for the beautiful fic! I rarely find great fics about war, and your fic reminds me of my friend's Eternity (sundae) but yours is different, I feel bad for Kai Sehun and Cham but I can relate to their feelings <///3 great job authornim!!

Chapter 1: This was so beautiful
Every once in awhile I find a piece of writing, whether it be a book or a FANFICTION or an article that is truly moving and this is one of those. Of everything I've read I've only found one book and two(now three) fanfictions that I love so much that I can't express it. This was absolutely goregous thank you so much.♥︎

Chapter 1: This is a really good story. It was beautifully written and the plot line was great! I love how human Kai and Sehun were. They were both selfish and acted irrationally when it came down to preservation. I want to write more but I kind of have to study. This is definitely one of my favorite one shots!

Chapter 1: I accidentally read a spoiler that Sehun died, but I wasn't expecting him to die like that!! And it's so horrible that he died thinking/fearing that Kai would be caught and everyone would die for nothing.
But I love this story. The writing was beautiful and all the characters...Kai was infuriating but understandable since he was so in love. I wish there was more about Cham, but that would probably be difficult.
Anyway, thanks for writing this!

Chapter 1: Even though I'm supposed to be studying right now, and I only swore that I'll read a tiny part of this, I just couldn't.
The story, your writing style, the plot, the characters; everything is simply perfect, and I can't believe that this only has like what 18 subs? This should get more attention, so I'm advising you to advertise it more because everyone should read this.
I read the AN and was a little surprised when you said that you might edit it in the future.
DON'T. just don't do it. It's great as it is... and I loved how you wrote an open ending.. it fits!
Even though they were more likely killed, I love to believe that they miraculously found a way to live even for few more days.. to enjoy each other's company for a while more.
Again, Good job!
Keep up with the great work! x

Chapter 1: Oh my Sehun. I just developed a lot of feelings for him these days but you made him die in this story.
I told you, you are really great in angst area. And this is not only about the war of Korea vs Vietnam but also the war of love. I don't really like fic or war-theme-fic but this one of yours is worth reading. I love it /sobs for my Sehunbaby/
