At the station

All It Took

Walking into the police station Kris made a b-line for his office, knowing full well that Tao was scurrying after him like some lost puppy he ignored the curious glances from his colleges and walked straight into his personal office, ushering Tao to follow quickly before closing the door. He sighed at the large pile of paper work of his desk and sat down, basically ignoring the robot in the room while he started reading through the first file on his desk. He managed to obtain about five minutes of silence before Yongguk burst into the room,  a gummy smile plastered on his face, his own robot walking beside him as he came in. “Well, well. Look what we have here, mister ‘too good for the program’ has finally gotten himself a partner” Yongguk’s chuckled echoed through the room but completely blanking him Kris continued to look through the file in front of him, doing everything he could to not let the obviously light heated taunt get to him. He could hear the shuffle of feet as Yongguk went to look at Tao, glancing momentarily from his folder Kris saw the man holding Tao’s chin and looking over his facial features a warm, friendly smile on his face, he whispered a complimentary “beautiful…” then looked to Kris again. “Are you seriously not even going to get him a chair?” Kris simply shook his head and looked at his file again, rolling his eyes as Yongguk stayed in his office and spoke to his own robot. “Zelo-ah, can you go get a chair from somewhere?” The cute blond boy quickly left the room to do as asked, leaving Tao, Kris and Yongguk alone. Kris was thankful that he and Yongguk had been friends long enough for the man to know when to just let him be but he still listened in as he up a conversation with Tao. “So, you’ve been stuck working with Kris huh? I hope he treats you okay, I’m Detective Bang Yongguk, just ask for me if you ever need anything, you are?” Kris couldn’t help but look up again, kind of curious as to how Tao would react to his first actual conversation. The thing spoke quietly, a small polite smile on his face he bowed a little to Yongguk before actually saying anything. “It’s nice to meet you Detective, thank you very much for the kind welcome, my name is Zi Tao, you can call me Tao.” Blinking at the thing Kris couldn’t help but let a small smile form on his lips, Xiumin had done a really good job of making it polite. Quickly looking down at his work again and straightening his expression before Yongguk could see Kris kept his eyes down as Zelo reentered the room with a chair for Tao, Yongguk thanked him and pulled the chair close to Kris’s desk then pulled Tao to sit down and smiled warmly at them both. “It was good to meet you Tao, I hope you and Kris get on well. Kris, I’ll meet you down the pub later, okay?” without waiting for a repose the man left with Zelo, only the sound of Kris turning pages and editing or signing things filled the room. The same stiff silence lingered for a few hours until Kris had completed all his work, only then did he look at Tao to see the thing looking around curiously. Knowing he couldn’t avoid this forever Kris took a short, heavy breath then looked at Tao.

“Okay.. here’s the situation Tao. Normally when we’re given robot partners you’ll stay with us at our homes. I however own a small property near here that I’ll allow you to stay at. It’s nothing special just a small apartment I stay at if I have to work late and don’t want to travel all the way home. I’ll pick you up and drop you off every day until we figure our something more efficient.” Kris didn’t pause to let Tao take in any of the information he was giving, his voice matter-of-fact and flat as he gave the robot all the information he needed to get across. “Now you might hear snippets around the office that I don’t like robots, this is true. While I am willing to work with you for the sake of my job I will make no attempt to befriend you. You are obviously entitled to have your own life so if you make friends feel free to bring them to the apartment, just ask me first.” His requirements were simple enough so he had no doubt the robot could follow them easily enough and if not then it’s only prove his point that the things were pretty much useless. “Why don’t you go find someone to show you around while I work then I’ll take you to the apartment to get settled?” Looking at the robot Kris waited for a response from the thing.
