My Whirlwind Life

Description

If only one word could be used to describe you, it would be "exceptional"  You were smart, a budding genius with near photographic memory whose dream was to be a pediatric surgeon.  You were athletic, the MVP of the US Women's National Amateur Basketball Team despite only being 16, and an incredible dancer who could memorize dances in mere minutes.  You were insanely talented vocally, able to express emotions from your heart with your powerful yet seemingly fragile voice.  You were charismatic, witty, sarcastic, flirty, and quick on your feet, not to mention, fluent in Korean, Mandarin, English, and Spanish.

Everyone loved you.  From parents to students, everyone knew that you were somethings special.  You had the looks, the brains, and the personality.  Everyone knew that you were going to become someone famous, a world class surgeon who would perform groundbreaking and life saving surgeries that would stun the world...

But what if your future went down a different path?  What if, within one summer, your life's goal completely changed?  Would you go with it?  What obstacles would you have to overcome?  How would your life change?

***Sorry if my writing seems too flowery or enigmatic.  I was trying to cram in too much info, and although, many readers may be able to guess where my story's going, I didn't want it to be too obvious.  Maybe I should try a simpler approach?

Foreword

This story will be written in Mi Young's POV, unless otherwise noted.

I was sitting in the spacious hotel room, drinking water while my eyes were glued to the glowing TV screan in front of me. The team captain, Rachel, was sitting next to me on the couch while munching on her chips, her attention also on the screen in front of us.  The rest of the basketball team members were either lounging inside the room, gossiping about boys and school or outside playing around.

We were watching the footage of last night's basketball game on ESPN that covered our game against the Korean Women's National Amateur Basektball Team.

"Last night's game was absolutely spectacular!  You know, Bob, I had some reservations about this whole new high school vs college basketball global tournament, but those girls have just blown me away."

"I know exactly how you were feeling.  When the idea for this tournament was first thrown on the table last year, I had no idea what to think of it!  Reporting on college basketball games was one thing, but on high school games as well?  The last time ESPN has ever done something like this was 10 years ago, when LeBron was in high school!  But Frank, what we saw last night changed history in women's basketball.  The US team as well as the Korean team have set the standards for the Global Amateur Basketball Tournament so high, despite this being the first year of the tournament."

"Bob, let's take some time rewatching the highlights of last night's game that ended with the US team's victory."

"Frank, from start to finish, the performances of these two teams amazed me.  But I've got to say, there was one player in particular who stole the night.  Mi Young Park from the US team.  Let's start from the beginning, shall we?  16 Year old Mi Young Park's singing of the National Anthem.  Breathtaking.  It's hard to remember that she's so young with a voice like that. What's even more amazig though, is that this young beauty was like a beast on court."

"I don't believe that this is only her second year in the highschool circuit.  Sure, I knew she had to be good to make the team, but her unexpected win of Most Valuable Player of the Year in her freshman year of highschool and her basketball performances during the entire tournament demonstrate her monstrous skill and talent."

"Take a look at that drive!  Her speed down the court and plays against the Korean Team's Sumi Kim and So Eun Lee were stellar.  And that jump!  Her layup form is just..wow!"

"That's not all, Frank.  The entire night, she missed just two shots.  Two 3 pointers.  Unbelievable.  See?  The hook shot from the captain Rachel..BAM!  She slams it in!  The fadeaway...and the ball goes in again!  The 3 pointer jump shot....WHOOSH!  It's IN!  And the final buzzerbeater slam dunk!  She twists, she turns, and BAM!  Wow!"

"Her defense is excellent as well!  She is certainly not one of the taller players on the court, but her blocking is tight! But wow, is her offense up there! Her insane dribbling skills combined with her speed is just deadly."

"From the US Team, captain Rachel and Shooting Guard Jennifer and from the Korean Team, captain Na Eun and Center Sumi had commendable perfamces as well.  Both teams did fantasticly in keeping the energy and tension on the court...."

"I still can't believe that we won" Rachel whispered beside me.

I glanced at the tall, ebony girl beside me.  Rachel's eyes glistened as she got lost in the memories of last night's win.

"Of course we would win!  You know how much we practiced since after all, you kept chasing our asses everytime we placed even one foot out of the gym."  I said while jabbing her sides.

She swatted my hands away.

"I know how hard we worked!  It's just that, wow.  I can't believe I'm a part of this.  We have won against a COLLEGE team, and our game was broadcasted, like, everywhere."

I roll my eyes.  "I mean, it's just starting to sink in for me.  I'm so glad that I'm the captain of such an..."

"Guys!  Check this out!"  Nahil, a hyper willowy African American girl, came running through our hotel door and slammed down newspapers in front of us.  "We're on the front page!  They're raving about our game and how awesome we were! And-oh!  Mi Young!  Everyone on TV is talking about you!  They-"

"I know.  I've been watching." I said, nodding to the TV that was still on.

"Hey!  Can't you have a better reaction to this?  Like, OMG! You're like a superstar now!"  Nahil squealsed.

"It's just a little awkward hearing them say all that.  Why?  You want me to go all diva?  Peasant, bow down to your gorgeous and ultra-fabulous basketball goddess!  Grovel at my feet!"  I adopt my voice to a super high and haughty tone and mockingly glare at her.  Nahil and Rachel burst out in giggles.

Sandrea, a muscular Caucausian girl with curly brown hair, emerges from the kitchen and plopps down beside us.  "Please.  Mi Young's used to all this.  I mean, come on!  She's pretty, sporty, and smart - the whole package.  She's like a legend at my school."

"Whoah, really?  Don't you live, like, in Texas!  And I think Mi Young lives in California..."  Nahil trails off as her forehead wrinkles in confusion.

"Yeah, but there was this short article about her in TIME magazine last October.  It mentioned how good her ball skills were and how she basically crushed all the other middle school teams in the national league.  I think they also said that last year she made some really cool discoveries about testing for certain cancers in young patients as well.  Anways, it was about the new generation stars that the public should look out for."

"I am so envious of you!  Why are you so fricking perfect?"  Nahil groaned as she pouted at me.

Rachel laughed as I snorted.

"So MiYoung, as the star for today,  what should we do?  I mean, this is our last day in Korea, and because of practice, we haven't been able to have any fun for the past months."  Rachel asked as she turned to me.

"Yeah!  Like, do you know any cool places?  You've lived here before, right?" Nahil pipes as she also turned to me.

"I don't know..I've only lived here for 3 years and I left in 2011.  It's been a while...so."

"You're so boring!  I mean, don't you want to do anything?  It's not like you can visit Korea any time you want.....and we're leaving tomorrow morning!  Geez, I haven't done anything fun and it's already June!"  Nahil noisly sighed as she started pulling on her cornrows.

"Summer just started.  I can't believe your older than me, Nahil.  Seriously?  Slow down."  I told Nahil.  "Besides, only you guys and the rest of the team are leaving Korea tomorrow.  I'll probably be staying here all summer." I smirk at the tall girl curled at the base of the sofa, taunting her.

"Yeah, yeah...some sort of music contest right?  Urghhh you have all the talent in this world.  Why was God so unfair?"

"Stop your wailing!  And let's just enjoy the rest of the day, kay? You guys need to rest after the hard game yesterday."  Rachel whacked Nahil on the head lightly as she scolded the rest of us.

I turn my gaze back to the TV, which fortunately had stopped talking about the game last night and had moved on to reports of the global events.

Little did I know that my life was going to change in less than 24 hours....
