He was used to the feeling of emptiness.

He never really lied or even attempted to hide his bouts with sadness and depression. Life hadn’t been easy and kind to him, no matter how many times he smiled through the pain and the tears. Sometimes he’d wondered if he could make it, really. Not just make it in his career. It was more of he wondered if he could make it through each day. Some days, it was easier. Some days, it wasn’t.

For months now, he’d live with a void in his life, in his heart – one that nothing and no one could fill. Tragedy definitely had its way of taking so much and barely leaving anything behind. Idly, he wondered what he had done to deserve this. He had done his best to be good, to do good. So why?

He often wondered why, even when deep inside he knew he’d never understand.

He was suffering. He had been suffering. And it was one of those days he wondered if he could make it at all.

An approaching officer snapped him out of his thoughts. He stood up straight and gave the respect accorded to someone of the older man’s rank. In return, he was given a rather heavy bag and was then left on his own once more. He opened the bag and spilled all the contents on his bed.

Many were white, his favorite color. Many others were blue. The rest were of other colors, standing out against the sea of white and blue. All
