[PROLOGUE]

“Naeun! Son Naeun! Young lady, you get back here right now!”

Her mother’s efforts to pull her back remained fruitless, the shouting voice only growing fainter and fainter the further her feet carried her into the forest. Night had fallen and the moon and the stars had already taken their place in the sky, watching over the world. The leaves continued to crunch under her slippers even as she slowed down, finally coming to a stop. 

Once her body resumed a regular breathing pattern, she slowly lifted her head to examine her surroundings. 

To her left, trees.
To her right, trees.
Straight ahead, trees.
Behind, trees.

Her deep brown eyes turned glassy once again as tears started to well up, hindering her view.

Everything was a blur.

Among the sound of the leaves rustling in the cold yet light breeze, all that could be heard was the violent sobbing coming from the 15-year-old girl with long, beautiful hair in the white nightgown that almost glowed.

As the minutes passed, the violent sobbing was reduced to a silent weeping that could not be heard.

What have I done? What am I going to do? How am I going to get home?

The young Naeun fell to the ground in defeat, hugging her knees as she shivered and sobbed in the middle of the night’s forest.

The cold wind didn’t continue to blow. 

Suddenly, a feeling of warmth encased her body. An abrupt wave of security, of reassurance, of safety washed over her being and devoured all the fear in her body.

Then a voice. A voice of a young boy, almost a young man. Barely a whisper but it spoke so sincerely.

“It’ll be okay.”

The warmth reached her heart.
