The Real Reason

EXOCarols:First Snow

The sky was an evening grey, and the clouds chased the endless grey sky. The trees had no leaves, their branches seemed to reach out to the sky, like boney fingers. Even though boney, they seemed somewhat mystical and calming.

The grass was a bright green, and it was a contrast to the evening winter colours that covered the streets. Only, it wasn't snow. It was just the atmosphere surrounding them.

Yes, fall was just coming to a curtain call, and winter was about to make an entrance. Luhan could feel the winter breeze pierce his skin, he could feel the winter colours envelop him like a war, knitted christmas scarf.

But he was there solely for one reason.

Luhan had intended to watch the first snow fall.

It wasn't snowing just yet. Luhan knew that it only started snowing at midnight of Christmas Eve. The first snow of Beijing.

Everyone didn't know this. It was an indisputable fact that wasn't well known to many people.

Luhan sat at the bench. It had been a year since he was at this exact spot, waiting for the first snow, sitting on the same bench...

The same events were replaying at that exact moment.

The wind blew against Luhan's soft skin, and the animals had just started to scatter back to their homes. The kids were playing ball, a couple (probably the same couple from last year) were cuddling against a tree.

Everything was the same...

Except, Raegel was no longer beside him. Raegel, the girl whom was made with perfection, was beside Luhan the year before.

Luhan remembered exactly what she had said to him when they first met last year, a few minutes before the first snow.

"Are you here for the First snow?"

Luhan was shocked, and amused that the girl knew of the First Snow. Like said earlier, it was a fact that was very very rarely known.

Luhan gazed up at the sky from the bench, it would just be a few more minutes until the First Snow would come.

He inhaled the scent of the snowy chilled frosty air, he let out an exasperated sigh.

This was his hometown.

He would always return to watch the first snow. It was just that special magical moment to him.

And they both shared that special magical moment.

But she wasn't with him.

"I miss this town..." He whispered in the chilly air.

"Me too..."

A breeze swept past him, for a moment, everything was silent.

He heard her voice.

He didn't want to turn around.

What if she really was there?

He was scared.

But nonetheless, it was her.

"Ni Hao, Luhan"

He couldn't help but look. It was Raegel. The girl whom had chilled his heart and taken it with her.

"Luhan...?"

He saw her. Her doe like eyes, her beautiful porcelain skin, her heart-melting smile...she looked just like last year...she was wearing the same jacket, same boots...same perfume.

Vanilla apples.

But this time, she was even more beautiful.

"Raegel...is that really...you?" He said, he couldn't help but smile. He missed her.

"Yeah, it's me. I go by Xinyi now though..." She gave a sweet smile. The exact same one that made his heart flutter last year.

And his heart was fluttering at the sight.

Can't I still call you Raegel...?

"How...have you been? No, screw that, how have you been and why are you in Beijing?!" Luhan gleamed happily. He didn't mean for it to come out as an outburst. But he really missed her.

He instantly hugged her, embracing her warmth and vanilla apple scent he loved and missed so dearly.

"Haha, Luhan, Luhan..." She smiled. She patted his back.

No, they were not together... But both of them couldn't help it. They missed each other.

Luhan released the hug and was wearing a warm smile. The same one last year that caused her cheeks to turn pink. Which did happen right then.

"So how are you? I haven't seen you around since..." He trailed off, not wanting to remember the heartbreaking memory.

"Um, I'm fine...I just returned yesterday...I would never miss the First Snow. I only return for the First Snow..." She smiled.

I wasn't the reason why you returned...?

"Oh...I see...it's good to see you again." He said.

"You too Luhan." She smiled.

Silence dawned onto them. All that was heard was the laughter of children and other people.

Luhan stared in front of the street. He could feel Raegel's gazing there too.

It was after all, where they separated ways.

"How is your eye?" He murmured, not landing a glance at her. His gaze fixed on the heartbreaking memory in front of him.

"It's a lot better...I got it treated in Germany..." She murmured, also staring at the scene playing in her mind.

"Germany?" He said, looking at her.

He remembered at some point on her Facebook, she was in a relationship with a German.

"Yeah..." She said, clutching her hands tight.

She was scared Luhan would scold her for dating someone else so quickly.

But she did have the right to, then why was she feeling like this?

"We aren't together anymore...he's too busy at the hospital. We are just friends now." She whispered softly, the wind caught her whispers and sung it to Luhan.

"Oh..." He said.

"Yeah..."

Luhan laid back onto the bench and closed his eyes. Tears were about to run and he didn't want to cry in front of her. His chest was tight and his lips were cold. He didn't know what to do.

He never imagined to see her again.

More so at the same place they met and separated.

But he was happy...he just regretted the pain he caused her.

"I'm sorry.." He chocked out. A tear running down. His voice was hoarse and strained. Listening to his strained and hoarse apology, Raegel felt terrible.

"It's okay...my eye is better now, that's all that matters." She said looking at him. He opened his eyes and sat back up properly.

She could see the tear that ran down.

Luhan sniff fled and gave a out a huge breath. He needed to clear out his mind.

It was all so unexpected and happening so fast.

"Luhan, it's okay...please don't blame yourself...that was months ago and I'm all better now..."

This was one of the many reasons why he loved her. She was so forgiving, and had such an innocent heart.

Luhan looked at her. So many questions in his mind that he could not answer.

"Raegel...why did you come here?" He finally managed to ask. He really wanted to know if he had anything to do with it.

She knew he would be here...she had wanted to talk to him...

He was sure of it.

"It's Xinyi now..." She said softly. Her voice coloured with sadness.

"You would make an exception for me...right?"

She would make an exception for him.

He loved her so much, she couldn't just get over him so easily so quickly. Even after months he wasn't over her.

"Raegel, why did you come here?"

In fact he was even more in love with her.

"I said it was because of the First Snow" she said looking at him in the eye.

His chest was so tight, it would burst...

She really only came for that?

His eyes showed such sorrow and remorse.

He should know the truth.

"But...I also...just wanted to see you again...and..." She trailed off, seeing the spark of hope in his ready eyes. "And..."

"..." Luhan was silent, he waited for her answer for a few moments too long.

It felt like years. It was torturing him.

"I wanted to know...whether..."

She looked at him, allowing her words to trail off.

Her voice was the one that was slightly strained now.

She couldn't bring herself to say it for some reason.

She didn't want to admit. She didn't want Luhan to be right. She didn't want to show him that he knew her best out of everyone.

But he did.

"Whether..." She said, her eyes glassy.

Luhan held her cold hands and rubbed her palms. He always did this...it was to clam her down and reassure her.

He missed holding her delicate hands.

Her delicate soft hands always fit in right with his.

"..you still love me.."

A small chilly snowflake fell onto their held hands.

 It was the First Snow.
