Foreword

Prologue:

On the night I die, it was pouring outside.

I was panting as I ran through the exit. Sweat was rolling down my cheeks when I finally stepped on wet grass. I was running out of breath, but I knew I couldn't stop, he was right behind.

I reached the garden and rushed towards the biggest oak tree. I remembered it because my mother brought me here once. I was soaked.

"Come back here you little brat!" I could hear my stepfather. He was close.

I climbed the tree, my dress tearing, but I didn't care. I reached the highest branch in the oak tree. I was so scared as I saw my stepfather standing underneath the tree and I saw the glint of metal in his hands.

He saw me and positioned his gun at me. I couldn't move, I was too tired.

And the next moment I saw red. Red all over my body. I was still breathing. I hugged the tree close, knowing if I fall, I would die. I saw my stepfather crumple to the ground, the lightning struck him.

My breathing was ragged. I heard sirens all around me. The neighbors were rushing out.

"There was a child here! She might still be alive."

I was drifting off. There was so much pain.

"Here! She's on the tree. Oh god. Blood, a lot of blood."

And then I felt something lifting me, off the branch. It looked like a boy. His face was staring at me, like I was a puzzle he had been trying to solve for days. My head darted back and forth, scared that he was still here.

I then realized I was in a garden. The same garden, but instead of the gloomy dark sky, the sun was shining brightly.

"I'm your guardian angel." He spoke.

"Am I dead?" I asked, scared.

"No. So you should leave."

"I don't want to. I like it here." I refused to leave. This place was so much better than the world I lived in.

"You must. Remember, I'll always be watching out for you, because I'm your guardian angel. You're not dead yet, so you can't stay. This won't be the last time we meet." He said, with no feelings in his voice, but it assured me anyway.

And then I was awake, but I decided to close my eyes. Because I was tired, so tired.

"The pulse is back! She's alive! That's unbelievable!"

I felt someone touching my forehead, saying in a voice filled with pity. "Poor child, it's best if she forgets what happened."

So I did. I forgot everything that happened before I was 8.

But what are we without our memories?
