Meeting my Best Friend

Growing Up
The christmas party was supposed to be fun. His father said so. They were supposedly best friends with the people having it.
His mother said he could make a new friend. Because the other couple had a child too.

His name was Yi fan.

Ten year old Joonmyeon jumped up and down in his seat as his father drove them to the fancy christmas party they were supposed to be going too. His parents told him he could go this year after he begged them for atleast an hour. “Alright fine,” His father had told him. “I guess it’s about time you met them.”

He had always heard about this family from his parents. They were best friends. Apparently Joonmyeon had met them when he was younger but he didn’t remember that much. Then after that he had been traveling around with his parents, and there wasn’t much time to stop and chat apparently.

Maybe that comes with being in a family full of scam artists.

”Calm down Joonmyeon, we’re here.” The boy stopped fidgeting in his seat and unbuckled the seatbelt before he was hopping out of the car just as his father parked it. The child couldn’t help but stare up in slight awe at the large mansion they had parked infront of. It was so cool! “Come on.” His father called and he quickly jogged up to catch up with his parents who were already half way to the door. His mother fussed over him for a moment to make sure he looked good. Joonmyeon for once let her - because of how he had never been to a fancy party like this and hadn’t worn a suit outside of the one scam his parents made him be apart of a few months ago.

The door opened and they were let inside, Joonmyeon was staring once again in awe at the red and silver christmas decorations. “Keep up.” His mother giggled and he smiled and quickly followed after her. He had never seen so many people dressed up in a room before! They all looked so pretty. However he was pulled out of his thoughts by his father putting a hand on his shoulder and guiding him towards a couple in the corner. His parents greeted the two like old friends, and he guessed that these were the people his parents spoke about before.

“And this is Joonmyeon.” The kid nearly stumbled as his father gave a hard clap onto his shoulder. The adults laughed and the other woman called someone over to them. Joonmyeon looked and it was another younger boy, but somehow the other was taller than him and honestly it ticked him off alittle.

"Yifan, meet Joonmyeon."

"Hi." The other gave a small wave and Joonmyeon returned it alittle shyly.

“How about you two go get some food and let the adults talk?” Joonmyeon didn’t want to leave his parent’s sides in all honesty, but he was being dragged away by the taller to the food table. It was awkward on Joonmyeon’s part, he was used to interacting with kids his age. Yifan seemed to get abit frustrated with him but then he suggested something.

“Let’s go steal the dessert from the kitchen.” He perked up at the word ‘steal’ moreso than ‘dessert’, but he found himself grinning and nodding along with the other. They laughed as they ran across the room and into the kitchen, Joonmyeon barely noticed his parents laughing themselves because of their actions.

“Where is it?” The younger asked, starting to look over all the counters.

“I don’t know…they haven’t taken it out yet so it should still be in here.” Yifan looked around too, and he started searching the higher cupboards and the fridge. “How many places can you hide a cake anyways.”

Joonmyeon was about to answer, because he was a near expert at hiding things already, but he was cut off. He was cut off by loud bangs. Yifan seemed to recognize the sound before him, but soon it registered for the young scammer too.

  Gun shots.

”Get down!” Yifan scrambled over to him, pushing him down so they were both hiding behind the island. Shots were fired over their heads and Yifan kept his arms around Joonmyeon while he was currently covering up his ears.

What was going on…?!

”In here-!” He barely heard Yifan’s command but he was following the older into one of the cabinets hidden in the island. It was large enough that the two kids could fit in it if they curled their legs up to them, which they ended up doing.

They could hear screams coming from the other’s room and he couldn’t help but cover his ears again. His eyes stung with tears because honestly, he was scared. Any time there was a gun involved it always ended badly. One of his parents got hurt, someone else would get hurt, they’d have to run as fast as they could — he hated guns.

”Hey Hey it’s okay—” The child infront of him seemed to have better calm in this situation. How, Joonmyeon didn’t know but it was helping him calm down slightly too. “It’s going to be okay.” Joongmyeon nodded and blinked back the tears. He hadn’t known Yifan very long but if his parents were best friends with his then what’s stopping them from being best friends?

It was silent for awhile, Yifan wanted to get out of the cabinet and look around but Joonmyeon held him back. They had silent little arguments but eventually Yifan agreed not to go out just yet. Only when he heard his name being called did he disobey Joonmyeon and pushed open the cabinet door.

”Yifan!” The two kids crawled out as they realized it was Yifan’s father calling for them. He was at the front of the kitchen, and Yifan quickly ran over to him, broken glass crunching under his dress shoes before his father was pulling him into a hug. “Thank god you’re okay—” His eyes went from his son to his best friend’s son and his expression instantly hardened.

Joonmyeon gulped, because that expression was never good.

”Joonmyeon, come here.” He let go of his son and Joonmyeon nodded slightly, making his way more carefully across the destroyed floor. The man put a hand on his shoulder and the other on Yifan’s and guided them through the hallway. There were people laying on the floor and Joonmyeon let his hands come up to cover his mouth and nose so he didn’t breathe in the blood and want to gag because of it. He had always hated the smell.

Guards were around picking up bodies and moving them or covering some with black tarps. “Wait.” The man called out to one guard who was about to cover up two people. Joonmyeon’s heart raced as the man pulled the tarp back and the people were revealed to be his parents. The ten year old wasn’t exactly hard to upset, So the sight of his parents laying side by side, holes now decorating them along with their fancy clothes, it was to much for him.

He pulled away from the mna’s grasp and ran over to them, tripping over a woman’s arm on the way but he scrambled back up and went over to them. “Appa! Umma!” He cried out as he collapsed next to them. The sobs were loud and he leaned over the bodies and clenched onto his father’s tuxedo jacket, pulling on it as if it would get his father to wake up. “Wake up! Get up…please…”

He wasn’t sure how long he had been crying, or how he could still even cry after the amount of tears that had left his eyes, but soon enough he found a hand on his shoulder, and he looked up to see Yifan there. “Come on, you gotta get up.” Joonmyeon shook his head defiantly, causing the older to huff and pull on him. There was some pushing and shoving that was almost to childish for this situation but soon Yifan was pulling him up and holding onto him as he tried to go back to his parents.

“Let them go Joonmyeon - there’s nothing you can do.”

"B-But Hyung—"

“No buts. Come on, help me cover them up yeah?”

It took Joonmyeon a moment to collect himself, wiping the tears from his face the best he could as he tried to stop shaking, and Yifan was patient. Simply standing there with a hand around the other’s arm and when the younger seemed okay enough he let go. “Ready?” There was a moment of silence and stillness before he saw Joonmyeon nod. Carefully the two kids went over to the edges of the black tarp and covered the former scammer’s bodies with it.

Joonmyeon couldn’t help but stare at it once they were covered up. What was he going to do now…?

A tug on his hand snapped him out of his thoughts and he looked down at it before looking up at Yifan, who was trying his best to give him a smile. “Come on, let’s go eat some dessert, okay?” Joonmyeon sniffled, wanting to decline and just sit next to his parents but Yifan was pulling him along anyways. He stumbled behind the other and Yifan’s father simply watched as the two walked passed him and back to the kitchen to where some of the workers were cleaning up the room. On the counter was now the cake that was supposed to be served and Yifan had someone get two slices and forks off before he was sitting on the floor of the kitchen, dragging Joonmyeon down with him.

They spent a good three hours on the floor of the kitchen, the first spent eating in silence, the next simply talking about anything that came to mind. Somehow in the third hour they managed to drag the workers into a food fight. By the end of it Yifan and Joonmyeon were slumped against eachother, covered head to toe in chocolate, flour, and who knew what else they had thrown around. The workers had been yelled at to get back to work and the kids were scrambling up as Yifan’s father did not seem happy with them.

“Joonmyeon.” The younger froze up and dropped his head slightly. “While I’m happy that you’ve cleared your head - did your parents say anything to you about what you were to do if something happened to them?” He shifted slightly, feeling something uncomfortable in his shoe - egg shell? - and nodded his head.

“Ap-Appa said I should find you….” He raises his head, a saddened smile on the elders face.

”Well, I guess you’ll just be staying with us then.” Yifan and Joongmyeon looked at eachother, the former giving a grin before they were looking up at the man.

  “Th-Thank you!”

”Now how about you two go get cleaned up huh? It’s been a long day. Yifan, show him to the extra room next to yours.” Yifan nodded at his father’s order and grabbed onto Joonmyeon’s hand again, running off down the hall and up the stairs.

Yifan helped him get inside the room and ran to get him some extra clothes while he took a bath. Honestly, Joonmyeon started crying again. They had to walk passed the workers taking all the bodies outside of the house and he just knew his parents were among them.

His parents were dead and there was nothing he could do about it.

He pulled himself out and got changed when Yifan brought him clothes - the older laughing at him as everything turned out to be to big. “It’s not my fault you’re a giant!” He huffed at Yifan, throwing a towel at him and the older quickly ran away to take his own shower.

Joonmyeon sighed and pulled himself onto the large queen sized bed, curling up ontop of the blankets, wet hair spreading itself over the pillow as he curled up. It wasn’t that much longer before he was crying again. He couldn’t help it really - who wouldn’t cry in this sort of situation? What he didn’t expect however, was the dip in the bed not that much later, and an arm around him. He rubbed at his eyes and looked up, blinking as he noticed who it was.

 ”Y-Yifan?”

”It’s okay to cry.” He mumbled. Who knew an 11 year old could speak such words? Joonmyeon took the advice, clinging to his new friend as he cried.

He may have lost his parents that night, but atleast he gained a friend.
