Will You?

Description

Senior Year, Homecoming week, one boyfriend, but no date. Lulu will you actually ask me this year? It's our last chance.

Foreword

“GO LUHAN, GO!” I cheered at the top of my lungs as my boyfriend scored the last goal just before the coach blew his whistle to signal the end of practice. Meeting my eye he grinned and waved before heading back into the group huddle. When practice finally ended, Luhan padded over to the team bench where I stood and enveloped me in a sweaty hug. When he pulled back he gazed down at me; eyes twinkling with excitement. “How’d I do?” he asked breathlessly. I flashed him a smile of my own and gave him a thumbs up. “You’re going to kill it tonight!” Tonight our school was playing against our rival school for a spot in the championship next weekend, and this year we were determined to win it all. But that wasn’t all that was going on next weekend. “Yah oppa, you know next Friday is homecoming right?” This year we were seniors, so this was our final chance to go to homecoming. Luhan and I had been dating for over three years, but every year we were unable to go to homecoming for different reasons: freshman year, he had a concussion, sophomore year, I was out of town for a funeral, and last year my sister just HAD to pick hoco weekend to get married. Even though Luhan’s game is Sunday afternoon and homecoming was on Friday, I kept clinging onto the slight chance that Luhan could go with me to homecoming this year. “Yeah, what about it?” he asked me inquisitively.  “Well, it’s our last year and I was thinking, y’know, maybe we could go?” I stammered out. Luhan’s dace darkened. “Oh… I don’t know if we can jagiya, the big game Sunday, we might have to practice.” I waved that notion away, “It’s okay oppa; I know how important this is for you. It’s just a dance, it’s no big deal.” Luhan looked at me hesitantly, but then he suddenly switched topics. “You’re coming to the game tonight right?” he asked excitedly. I playfully punched his arm. “Where else would I be tonight?” At that moment, one of Luhan’s teammates called him. “I have to go set up for the game tonight,” he mumbled apologetically. I gave him a gentle shove in their direction, “Go! I’ll see you tonight.” I turned around to point up in the stadium bleachers high above the field. “I’ll be up there cheering you on!” Luhan’s eyes sparkled with happiness. “I’ll hold you to that!”

The crowd went wild as the home team scored another goal. There were three minutes left in the fourth quarter, and we were tied 2-2. One more shot. One more point: that’s all we need. “C’mon baby,” I murmured as Luhan jogged on the field. The ball was passed back and forth, until finally Luhan had possession of the ball. Time seemed to slow down. 10… 9… Luhan managed to dodge a player. 8… 7… 6… He’s heading towards to goal. 5… 4…“GO LUHAN!” I screamed right as he kicked the ball. It sails through the air (3… 2…) and slips right through the goalie’s fingers. 1.. BZZTT!! Cheers erupted through the crowd as the team rushed onto the field and enveloped Luhan. I jumped up and down and hugged the people beside me, ecstatic that our team won. Suddenly, I heard the crowd hush, and quiet whispers spread throughout the crowd. “Is he okay?” “What happened?” I quieted down and peered over the railing in time to see Luhan lying on the ground motionless. My blood froze and I stopped breathing. “No…” I murmured. Just then I felt a hand grasp my shoulder, and I whirled around to see Minseok, Luhan’s teammate. My face drained of color and became as white as his. “Luhan, someone accidentally hit his head when we all came together. He’s not waking up. They’re sending for an ambulance. You need –” I didn’t wait for him to finish. I sprinted through the exit and shoved my way through the mesh of people crammed into the hallway and when I broke through I rushed down the corridor leading down towards the field. Finally I could see the doors to the field and I pushed through the door with all my might. The bright stadium lights flooded into my vision, and I rubbed my eyes temporarily blinded. Cheers startled me and when I looked up after my eyes adjusted, my mouth dropped open. “Yah jagiya, what took you so long?” Luhan exclaimed. He stood in the middle of the field beside a large paper banner, and written in bright paint was his message: “Will you go with me to Homecoming?”

“What—I don’t understand! I thought you were going to be busy that night!” I spluttered. Luhan approached me, a smile stretched across his face. “I am. I’m going to be busy dancing all night with the prettiest girl ever! So what do you say?” On that note, he pulled a single white rose and offered it to me. “Will you be my date to homecoming?”
