[Prologue]:

The wind chimes rang out loud, as the strong breeze blew into the room, through the open windows.

“Ding. Ding. Ding.”

The musical chiming of the wind chimes seemed to be conveying a message.

“Ding. Ding. Ding.”

Somehow, it sounded like “I love you”.

I scanned the room wistfully.

The wind chimes had been a gift to me, from my two beloved and most important men in my life, as a birthday gift. I let out a soft sigh as I glanced at the room again.

Everything was in its rightful place.

Novels were placed according to their titles on the bookshelves.

Writings and drawings were neatly filed in coloured folders.

Photographs were framed and placed almost everywhere in the room.

The only difference was that no one was occupying this room anymore.

The owner was gone, and, I had been the owner.

My belongings were waiting to be collected and kept. All these were my beloved and precious items as all of these objects were reminders of him and me.

Then I saw him stepping into my room.

“Jae Jin…” I called out. I wanted so much to touch him again.

Jae Jin took the photograph, showing my boyfriend and me grinning happily, at the beach resort, under the shining sun. He had his arm around my waist and my head was on his shoulder. We were such a loving couple but yet Fate had played a cruel joke on the both of us.

Jae Jin had been our photographer then.

I saw Jae Jin packing my items into the boxes.

I was dead and he was dead.

The “he” was my loveliest boyfriend, Choi Min Hwan.

“Ding. Ding. Ding.”

I chuckled at Min Hwan’s silliness. I shut my eyes, and the images of us grinning widely and holding each other, played relentlessly in my mind.

“Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding.”

A stronger wind was blowing and the wind chimes were like butterflies fluttering.

“Alright, I get the message! Life goes on, take care!” Jae Jin shouted to the emptiness in the room in my raspy voice. I could tell that Jae Jin was ill and I bet he was suffering from insomnia ever since my death.

I had committed suicide, due to severe depression, which was the result of Min Hwan’s sudden death. He had died on the spot after a speeding car hit him.

“Ding. Ding. Ding.”

“I love you two too! Take care! Choi Min Hwan, you better take good care of my sister! She is the most important woman in my life!”

“Ding. Ding. Ding.”

Yes, I will.

That was the message from Min Hwan to Jae Jin.

Somehow, magically and strangely, Jae Jin could understand Min Hwan through the wind chimes. I did not know how they could communicate through that but they just did.

“Ding.”

Look.

A folder was swept onto the ground; it was Min Hwan’s force at work, with the help of nature.

Jae Jin picked it up and flipped it.

Inside the folder, there was just a piece of white paper, with black small curvy words. The words were definitely Min Hwan’s writings.

The piece of paper was our agreement; our eternal promise to each other.

“I, Choi Min Hwan, promised to take care of Lee Jae Eun, till the day I died. I will stay by her side, forever and always, loving and protecting her with all my heart and might.”

There was Min Hwan’s ugly signature.

Jae Jin let out a slight chuckle.

I beamed as I recalled the overwhelming surge of happiness when I received this from Min Hwan. I must be glowing radiantly with blissfulness.

I grinned widely and gave a light peck on Min Hwan’s right cheek.

Yes, Min Hwan was beside me. We were both spirits now and we were watching Jae Jin.

He was our last concern before we really would cease to exist.

A dazzling smile was on Min Hwan’s face.

“Ding. Ding. Ding.”

Min Hwan was telling Jae Jin that we had to leave.

“Alright, I should get going as well. Min Hwan, thank you for keeping your promise, in life and after death! You will be my best buddy, forever and always!” Jae Jin echoed the words Min Hwan had used.

Though I knew Min Hwan would never wish for me to commit suicide, I had no other alternatives.

Min Hwan was my life.

Without him, I was beyond devastated. Without him, life was not worth living. I knew it sounded exaggerated but our love for each other was beyond deep and strong. It was more than that.

Our love was like our inner strength and courage, to keep on living, happily.

Without him, I was totally lost.

He would be waiting for me, staying by my side, as a spirit or rather, a guardian angel.

Min Hwan was best at keeping promises.

In life and after death, I knew he had been protecting and guarding me. We truly loved each other but all I could say was that Fate was cruel.

I saw Jae Jin turn to take one last glance at my room before leaving with a heavy heart…
