Koki's Echo

Koki's Echo

(Bold: Voices/Song), (Italics: English/Japanese (actual Japanese words)

Listen, listen,

I would take a whisper if

That's all you had to give.

Tanaka Koki sat on the grassy hill overlooking the city. His earphones in, his eyes were closed as he listened to Your Side by KAT-TUN. The lyrics and tune washed over him. But nothing touched him as deeply as hearing his friends' voices again.

But it isn't, isn't,

You could come and save me and

Try to chase the crazy right out of my head.

It had been so long. So long since anyone had been there to try to save him. The voices echoed in his head. "You're a horrible person..." "You let everyone down..." "Even your friends don't want you anymore..." Eventually, Koki believed them.

I'm out on the edge,

And I'm screaming my name,

Like a fool at the top of my lungs.

Sometimes when I close my eyes, I pretend

I'm alright, but it's never enough.

Suddenly, in a split-second decision, in a desperate move to get rid of the voices plaguing him, Koki jumped up and yelled. With his eyes closed, he screamed. Not anything coherent, just a single attempt at trying to escape from the lonely, deafening silence that had been surrounding his life.

Cause my echo, echo,

Is the only voice coming back.

Shadow, shadow,

Is the only friend that I have.

The only thing he heard, however, was an echo. A quiet mimic of his own voice. Koki collapsed on the ground. His echo was ringing through his ears, joining the ever-present voices into a screaming cacophony of despair,

I don't wanna be an island,

I just wanna feel alive and

Get to see your face again.

Koki placed his head in his hands and all around him was silence. Even his music had gone silent. For the millionth time, Koki felt all alone. And again, for the millionth time, Koki wished he wasn't so alone. Faces flashed through his mind, five in particular. Faces he wished he could see again. Voices he wanted to hear again.

Just my echo,

My shadow,

You're the only friend that I have.

Koki glanced down at the grass. The warm sun seemed just as cold and unforgiving as the dark in him. As lonely as the shadow that stood, hovering over him, mocking him in its darkness.

Cause my echo,

Echo,

My shadow,

Shadow,

Again, Koki jumped up, trying to get rid of the dark. Hands into fists, he yelled. "Oi!" This time, however, no echo answered him. Five more shadows appeared next to his. And Koki heard, "Yo."

Hello, hello,

Anybody out there...?

That word was single-handedly the most glorious thing Koki had ever heard in a very long time. And when he turned around and saw who said it, it was as if the dark was instantly gone. He could actually feel the warmth of the sun and his shadow was also no longer a bane of warmth. It seemed to be warmth itself, surrounded by five others who glowed.

Kamenashi Kazuya waved, smiling happily. Akanishi Jin winked. "You're really loud." Nakamaru Yuichi remarked, that same annoying smile on his face. Ueda Tatsuya a peace sign outwards, girlish grin still there. Taguchi Junnosuke beamed and because he liked to irritate Koki, said, "Domo! Iriguchi, deguchi, Taguchi desu!"

Surprisingly, Taguchi's lame joke chased away all remaining doubts Koki had. He ran forward and kicked Taguchi, just for old times' sake. "Itai yo!" Junno rubbed his aching knee, but smiled. Koki smirked. "You got stronger." Koki punched Nakamaru as well. "You look like an idiot in your newest drama."
"Ano sa, I look fine, thank you very much." Still, he was smiling as well. Ueda gave him a hug, losing all pretense of fake manliness. "You're still a girl at heart, Ueda." Ueda pulled away and punched Koki. "Ow...wakatta. Don't prove it anymore." With JIn, he just shook his hand, and in English asked, "How was L.A.?"
"Awesome. But it's good to be home." Kame threw his arms around Koki in a tight hug. Coos and wolf whistles came from the rest of the group. When the teasing died down, Jin rolled his eyes. "You all need girlfriends."

Talking and laughing, the six walked down the hill, voices ringing in the peaceful silence, echoes lost in the wind. And on top of the hill, the sun set, on six shadows sitting, arms around each other, no longer alone.

Yatta! I finished another one. I listened to the song and I immediately know it would work perfectly in a fanfic. And here it is. Hopefully, you enjoyed. Thanks for reading!

Translation:
