Foreword

The city in Summer: It was all scorching sunlight, heated tarmac and thumping club tunes being blasted. Or at least, that's what it was for Roh HaeWon. She had lived with her Aunt and Uncle in downtown Yongsan and had done since her parents had split up when she was five. The girl was known by her neighbours for being a bit of a brat - she had a lot of gall and in her family business, it's what was needed.

Before she was even able to ride a bike, she could con unsuspecting oldies into thinking she was a sweet little Princess only to turn around and mercilessly beat them in a game of Janggi. Smart mouthed and ready to sass anyone, the odd girl found it difficult to make friends. She'd say she had better things to do beside forging pretentious relationships, but in her early twenties, the female was beginning to feel a tad lonely. After all these years, the young woman had forgot how to interact normally with other people.

On the first Saturday of July, HaeWon was tested on that subject.

Bedroom windows wide open and electric fan on to let the air circulate around the stuffy house, the female with her hair bleached blonde and the lower half a striking coral orange sat at her desk. Exhaust fumes from passing vehicles on the road out front and barbeques being lit up pilfered the distinct aroma of the urban summer into the light coloured space. Kohl lined eyes scanned the mistakes on the books belonging to the club her Uncle ran. Groaning, the blonde's head fell back. Running her hands over the clammy skin of her face, the tips of the girl's fingers brushed over the mar running up her cheekbone towards her right brow. HaeWon's eyes landed on her reflection in the small vanity mirror and with bitterness and a violent force, the girl slapped the item face down so she didn't have to look any longer.

Two clear knocks on the front door caused HaeWon to glance up. Standing up out of the wooden chair, the female leaned over the table and stuck her head out of the window to see who was calling. "Who're you?" She shouted down at the top  of a head of hair as brightly bleached as her own.

Startled by the girl's harsh tone, the guest's eyes shot up to meet those of the woman resting her elbows on the sill and hunching over with a glower. "I'm LuHan." He bowed almost in half before returning to an upright position. "I just moved in across the way." Nervously, the blonde jutted his thumb behind him and then held up the white bottle in his hands, as if the frowning female would be able to see what it was from that distance. "I brought a gift."

Huffing at the bad timing, HaeWon pulled herself back into her room without saying anything. Slamming the notebook shut, the blonde stomped out into the hallway and down the stairs. Yanking the heavy barrier open, the young woman was now face to face with the new guy. Maybe she should have put her glasses on sooner, as now that she was within a few feet of him, she could see just how good looking he actually was. His beautiful milky skin glowed under the harsh rays and his eyes sparkled as they landed on the homeowner.

"Good afternoon." He bowed his head again as the girl tilted her head to the other side.

"Chinese?" She asked and the taller male chewed the inside of his lower lip, unsure with whether the girl was angry that he was a foreigner.

"Yes."

"An' you're the new neighbour?"

"Yes."

Already fed up with her extra work and the blistering heat, the blonde wondered if a short break would be ok. "Come in." Pushing open the front door, she stood aside and gestured for the man to come inside out of the tacky afternoon air. "Have you been in Korea long?" She asked as she wandered through the foyer and into the dining room.

Fighting to kick his shoes off and not be left behind in the unfamiliar home, LuHan's reply strained. "I travel back and forth a lot."

Turning around just as her guest had staggered into the finely decorated room, HaeWon placed down two small glasses onto the polished wooden top. "What brings you back?" Accepting the gift, the homeowner unscrewed the sealed lid and poured out the drinks.

"I have a few reasons." The female twisted her head to frown at her company. Chuckling, the taller male's eye-smiled brightened his cute features even more. "Does that sound too vague?"

Shrugging and shaking her head, HaeWon turned away to down the shot of the fancy looking booze. "Who knows?" Finishing  the clear liquid with a fiery after burn, the shorter half of the pair fixed the side of her hair more towards her face.

Concerned, LuHan leaned forward to see the girl's expression. "Are you ok?" He questioned lowly, wondering if he'd done something to upset her. Or maybe it was the Moutai; it was an acquired taste, even for a lot of Chinese people.
