The One

The One

Kimin rubbed her temples as she organized the papers on top of the table. Her head was beginning to ache from the workload and the loud chattering of the high school students in the café didn’t help. It’s been two months since her first semester at Yonsei University started. It was hard, like everyone told her, but she tried her best since she chose this path.

It’s also been a few months since she’s last seen Baekhyun. He studied in University of Daegu. Chanyeol and Kyungsoo studied in Yonsei as well. Sehun and Kai pursued dancing and didn’t continue on to college. Suho was in California, he promised Minjae he’d be back for the holidays.  Minjae,  Kimin’s best friend, studied Baekseok Arts University where she pursued Business Administration. Kimin took English as her major.

“Some frappe might help,” she looked up to see the guy behind the counter awhile ago standing in front of her, holding up a cup with a smile. “It’s no use studying if you’re stressed out. Don’t worry, just a little more and I’d kick them out.” The boy glanced at the high school students who were laughing boisterously.

“Uhm… thank you-“ She glanced at his uniform and unfortunately, he didn’t have a nametag.

“I’m Yixing.” His smile grew wider and Kimin couldn’t help but smile back, even if it felt unusual since he was just a mere stranger who offered her a drink. “I study in Yonsei as well, I’ve seen you a few times. I noticed you’re a regular here.”

“Oh,” She muttered, not really knowing what to say. “You work here?”

“I own this.” Yixing looked so smug that Kimin couldn’t help but gape at him. Noticing her expression, he laughed softly. “I own this with a friend, I mean.”

The surprise didn’t disappear from Kimin’s face for a awhile and she was brought back to reality when a loud crash echoed inside the café. She looked at Yixing and then at the mess from the high school students and back at Yixing again. He still had that smile but his eyes told a different story.

“Please don’t report me to the police. I’d be back.”

-

At first, Kimin visited the café so often because it had a great atmosphere and the drinks and pastries tasted good as well. But now, she had another reason to visit, and that reason was currently catering to customers as she arrived.

Kimin took the seat at the far end of the café and she walked quickly so that she wouldn’t distract Yixing as she did his job.

“She definitely likes you now,” Luhan whispered in Mandarin to Yixing as he observed Kimin stealing glances on his friend. Yixing didn’t say anything as he took the customers orders. “My gosh, what kind of charm were you born with? She met you only a few weeks ago and look at her now. All aboard the Yixing ship!”

“Shut up, Lu.” Yixing muttered as he finally got the chance to take a break. He glanced at Kimin and caught her staring at him. Kimin looked away and Luhan chuckled. “If you are interested in her, why don’t you tell her?”

“But she’s interested in you!” Luhan muttered as he grabbed his friend by the shoulders and shook him. Yixing glared at him and removed his hands. “A little bird told me that the girl’s name is Kim Kimin and she’s majoring in English. How smart.”

“You’re crazy,” Yixing said as he shook his head. “That’s not how you treat girls. You don’t have to have a reason to like them, you know.”

“So you like her?”

“What?”

“What what?”

“.”

-

“He’s cute,” Minjae muttered as she and Kimin hang out at the café. Her eyes fell on Yixing, who was talking to Luhan and they seemed to be having some fun since their laughter echoed in the half-empty café. It was mid-afternoon already and not a lot of customers were coming by. “But of course, Suho’s much much more cuter.”

“When was Suho ever ugly in your eyes?” Kimin smirked.

“One word: never.” Minjae beamed proudly and Kimin had to laugh. Her best friend was really crazy in love. “I like him, he’s a whole lot different from Baekhyun, I could tell.”

“What do you mean?” Kimin raised her eyebrow at her and her best friend chuckled.

“I thought I heard you say you like him.”

-

It was quite a surprise for Kimin to bump into Yixing inside the campus. She couldn’t deny that he looked good with casual clothes since she only always saw him in his uniform. However, he didn’t notice her. He seemed to be in his own world and Kimin didn’t have the guts to distract him, even if she thinks that he would soon bump into someone.

And it actually happened.

“Uhm… I’m sorry, I wasn’t looking.” Yixing bowed multiple times as he bumped into an elderly person who looked like a professor. The man just smiled at him and apologized as well. Yixing watched the man walk away and when he spun around, his eyes finally found its way to Kimin. “Hey!”

Kimin couldn’t help but smile at the way he waved so excitedly, like a little kid.

“Hi, Yixing.” She didn’t know why she felt shy all of a sudden. Yixing approached her and stared at her, something was different and he couldn’t pinpoint what it was. “Uhm, is something wrong?”

“Nothing.” He replied. “Are you going home? I’m actually on the way to work. Do you want to come?” Kimin nodded a bit too quickly and she slapped herself mentally, hoping that Yixing wouldn’t notice. “But I have to pick Luhan on the way, he’s the friend I work with at the café.”

“Oh, I remember him.” Kimin said. “Where are we going to pick him up?”

Yixing paused and he suddenly frowned as if he was in deep thought. Kimin stared at him as he stood like that for a second before he sighed.

“I actually forgot.”

-

Luhan was an and Yixing hates him.

He was going to kill that guy when the day ends.

“You know, while we were at the airport one time to go here in Seoul, Lay actually forgot his passport at home! God, we had to take another flight!” Luhan grinned evilly at Yixing after watching Kimin laugh her heart out. “And then one time when we were here, he forgot he was in Korea and spoke Mandarin to a customer. I wanted the ground to swallow him up.”

“I didn’t know you were that forgetful, Lay,” Yixing wanted to punch his friend that time. His secrets were getting exposed one at a time. “Your friends must make fun of him a lot.”

“Obviously,” Yixing sighed. Luhan should be thankful that he’s busy cleaning the café up and Kimin had someone to accompany her. “Help out here, Lu. You were the one who made the other workers have a day off.”

“But I’m busy telling stories to Kimin!” Luhan frowned. “And you know what, our other friend, Chanyeol loved making fun of him because he-“

“Who?”

“Chanyeol. Park Chanyeol.” Luhan raised his eyebrow when Kimin’s eyes widened. “Why? Do you know him?”

“He was my friend in high school.” Kimin said. “The world really is so small.”

“Then you must know Baekhyun! He’s Yixing’s best friend!” Luhan didn’t notice how Kimin’s smile faltered a bit at the mention of the name. “Isn’t he adorable?”

“I used to date him…” Kimin whispered. Yixing stopped wiping the table across them and glanced at her. He noticed how her smile looked awkward and her eyes looked a bit sad.

“Luhan, stop that. You could continue talking tomorrow; it’s already getting dark out.” Yixing in the conversation and Kimin was more than thankful since she noticed that Luhan was going to pry about the issue. “Let’s go, Kimin, I’m going to walk you home.”

“But-“

“Wipe the tables or I’ll hit you.”

--

“How’s he?” Yixing said as he rubbed his arms. It was getting chilly outside already and he left his cardigan at the café because they left quickly.

“Hm?”

“How’s…Baekyun? I haven’t seen him in awhile.” Yixing hoped that it wouldn’t rub Kimin the wrong way. He just wanted to know what his friend was up to, they last saw each other two years ago despite being in the same city.

“I haven’t seen him since graduation, the rest of his friends, I only see them once in awhile.” Kimin said with a smile. “Aren’t you feeling cold though? I can walk from here. It’s not that dark yet.”

“I insist,” Yixing smiled. “It’s not safe for a girl to walk around alone.”

“Thank you, Yixing.” Kimin said. “I hope you won’t forget that.”

Yixing heard the hint of teasing in her voice and he pouted. “I’m not that forgetful. I just had a lot of things to think about.”

“I was just kidding.” Kimin laughed. “But you know what; I have a lot of things I have to thank you for.”

“Like what?” Yixing asked as he glanced at her curiously. Her smile grew wider.

“For making me happy.”

--

Something was definitely different months after that.

Well, to Kimin there was.

Suddenly, Yixing wasn’t the same boy she used to see at the café. His smiles suddenly looked brighter and when the sun shone on him, he looked like the boys from mangas she used to read as a kid. When she sees him at campus, he stood out so much.

“So you like him?” Minjae asked one time as they watched some music show in Minjae’s  house. Kimin didn’t reply and her best friend suddenly squealed. “You do! Oh my god! Suho has to know this!”

“Suho doesn’t have to know it.” Kimin frowned. “And I just think he’s cute!”

“Whatever, you also told me Baekhyun was just cute,” Minjae stuck her tongue out when Kimin acted like she was going to slap her. “So what are you going to do about it? Yixing’s really nice, I think he’s the one.”

“Whatever,” Kimin mimicked her.

“My god, my god, Luhan was really right!” Minjae giggled. “I hope he’s right about Yixing as well.”

“You know Luhan?” Kimin asked in confusion. She doesn’t remember anything about introducing the guy to her best friend.

“Of course I do! He’s my senior. I just didn’t tell you because I didn’t think it was important.” Minjae grinned. “That guy’s adorable. But of course-“

“Suho’s much more adorable. I know that.” Kimin frowned. “But what did Luhan tell you?”

“Why should I tell you? Yixing should be the one to tell you.”

Kimin picked up a popcorn from the bowl  in front of them and threw it at her best friend.

“Don’t be so excited, Kimin, he’d tell you sooner or later.”

-

“My, my, Zhang Yixing, you’re really in the top class now.” Yixing groaned as his friends started entering the café. The few females inside were watching them and whispering to themselves as they watched the four boys look around. “You should’ve just bought us tickets if you were this rich already.”

“You were doing fine in China, Huang Zitao, what’s the need to go here?” Yixing said as he made them sit at an empty table. Luhan followed after him and by this time, some of the girls were trying to take pictures secretly although they were already caught.

“Pffffft, seems like you’re missing out on things then. Didn’t you hear that we’re going to have a reunion? It’s been a long time. It’s gonna be this weekend.” Jongdae said. Yixing glanced at Luhan and the latter just shrugged. “Since we’ve all got jobs now, Kris hyung decided to meet up, you know, to catch up. Even though Suho hyung wouldn’t be able to make it.”

“And do you know what’s the catch with this reunion?” Minseok said with a mischievous smile. Yixing didn’t like it at all. “We all have to bring a date.”

Well .

-

Yixing asked Kimin to be his date. Well, he didn’t really ask it that way because he was nervous as hell and Luhan’s tips were just messing with his mind.

“Can you come with me to a party? You can bring your friend along.”

Kimin said yes.

-

The reunion wasn’t like the typical one. They just met at Kyungsoo’s place, since he had the largest house. It didn’t really come as a surprise to Kimin to see her high school friends there, although of course, the anxiousness was there. She came early with Minjae, although the latter was dragged away by Luhan and Sehun as soon as they arrived.

“You came early,” Yixing greeted her with a smile-the smile that made her knees felt like jelly. “Kyungsoo’s still getting their mini-theater fixed and stuff.”

“Wow, so he’s that rich?” Kimin said. “Uhm, so where’s the other girls?”

Minseok, Yixing cursed in his mind. He was going to murder that guy later, and the other guys as well.

“Baekhyung hyung!” Yixing didn’t miss the look on Kimin’s face. Her smile faltered for a bit as she glanced at the door. He knew that although Kimin had already moved on, of course, some feelings would still be there.

“Get off of me, Tao.” Baekhyun groaned as he pulled away from Tao who gave him a bear hug. He froze suddenly when his eyes met Kimin. “…hi.”

“Let’s start the party guys.” Kyungsoo said from somewhere, which caught everyone’s attention.

-

Sometime after the movie they watched, Kyungsoo brought out some drinks since everyone was already legal. Kai was the first one to get drunk, immediately falling asleep which got everyone’s attention. They started taking pictures of him and even filmed him when he started blabbering.

“Do you want to talk at the garden? It’s quiet in there.”  Yixing whispered to Kimin. Of course, Baekhyun didn’t miss it. He watched with hawk eyes as the two disappeared.

“My god, Byun Baekhyun, haven’t you moved on already?” Minjae muttered as she gulped a glass of alcohol.  “It’s your loss anyway.”

“Whatever, I’m going to use the bathroom.”

-

“The sky’s really nice tonight, isn’t it?” Kimin said as she looked up at the stars. She didn’t know that Yixing was watching her instead. When she felt his gaze though, she looked down and blinked at him. “Do I look like the sky now?”

“You have dirt on your cheek.” Yixing grinned. Kimin got flustered as she furiously rubbed on her cheeks, oblivious to the fact that Yixing was just making fun of her. “What did you just eat? You have some on your lips too.”

“What? I didn’t-“

And then something was pressed on her lips. It was warm, a bit moist and- , Yixing’s kissing her. He’s ing kissing her. Her eyes widened as his tongue swiped on her lower lip before he pulled away with the same mischievous glint on his eyes.

“What was that?”

“What was what?” Yixing said as he looked up at the sky. “The sky’s really nice tonight, isn’t it?”

“You just kissed me… and stop mocking me, Lay.”

“Do you know what’s even nicer?” Yixing asked all of a sudden, making Kimin frown in confusion. Everything was so sudden that it made her heart beat race. But at least… at least it confirmed that she really did like him. She likes Zhang Yixing.

“W-what?”

“I think I’ve fallen for you.”

-

“What are you so mad about?” Kris asked after Baekhyun made his ‘trip’ to the bathroom. Minjae had a little idea after Yixing and Kimin came back seconds later. Kimin’s face was all red and Minjae knew that it wasn’t because of the alcohol.

“You have to tell me later or else I’d punch you.” Minjae whispered to Kimin as she sat beside her. Yixing was all smiles and the boys did not even think it was weird.

“I actually have to go now, my girlfriend’s waiting for me.” Baekhyun said in a hurried manner as he collected his things. “I’d catch up with you some other time.”

“But hyung, the fun was just starting.” Sehun whined although Baekhyun just smiled awkwardly at them and hurriedly left without another word. The others exchanged glances in confusion.

“I thought you were the one who won’t be able to move on, I was wrong.” Minjae whispered although it went ignored because Kimin was already exchanging meaningful glances with Yixing.

-

They went on dates secretly at first, not wanting to be teased by the other boys though they knew that they had an idea already.

On their 100th day together, Yixing introduced her to his parents. Via Skype. They promised they would visit Korea on the holidays to meet her. The Zhangs had liked her a lot already.

A month after that, she brought him to her home and introduced her to her parents. They were really strict towards him. They asked about everything and it made Kimin embarrassed but Yixing answered them patiently. It took a while but they got her parents blessings.

Four years later, four years of being together, after Kimin’s graduation and after Yixing opened the fifth branch of his café, he asked for her hand in marriage.

She said yes.

-

When Kimin was a kid, her idea of a prince charming was someone who rode on horses and wore a metal costume-a knight in shining armor.

When she was a teenager, it changed to a guy whose personality matched that of a character from a manga.

When she grew older, her prince charming was someone who had a great personality, someone who could make her happy and protect her from everything. Someone who was like her dad in some ways.

Zhang Yixing was like that.

She knew that she was right with her decision. That she chose the right one. That saying yes to Yixing was the perfect thing to do.

Because deep in her heart, she knows.

She knows that he’s the one.
