Escape

Finding Home Again

We had just arrived at the edge of camp when the explosion happened. Ayla landed on top of me and I heard a tremendous whack as she hit her head on the ground. I felt her body go limp and I knew she had passed out. Thankfully I could still feel her breathe landing on my face.

I gently moved her off of me to stand up. I looked over at the camp and realized we had to get out of here. There was no chance of me saving anybody without getting killed myself. I painted a picture of a map inside my head and imagined what way I would have to go in order to reach the South Korean border. We would be able to find refuge there.

I picked Ayla up off the ground and removed her heavy coat. She would be warm enough and if we were going to make it we would need to travel as light as possible. I also removed my heavy coat and wrapped my lighter one over both of our shoulders. I started to run south. Luckily we had left on the south end of camp, so all I had to do is turn back around the way we had left and run.

I was careful not to move to quickly to save my breath and make sure I didn't hurt Ayla more than she was already. We moved at a good pace and we kept it up until nightfall. By then, all I could make out of the camp was a slight cloud of smoke, rising up out of the trees.

It took several days to reach the border, Ayla had woken up, but didn't know who or what was going on. She was in a massive daze and seemed more to be running on auto pilot than actually being awake. She never spoke and neither did I. I'm pretty sure she was still unconscious, but it made it easier for us to move with her walking, even if it was auto pilot.

We avoided villages and I found a little food and water on the way, but luckily I had kept snacks on me and so had Ayla. We made these last as long as possible, but our limited supplies couldn't last much longer.

I finally had to make the decision and try to find a house and get some help. Ayla was getting worse by the day and we both needed medical help.

Ayla passed out one day and I was forced to carry her. I wondered around for a bit before I finally saw a field and a house in the distance. I hurried as fast as I could in that direction and collapsed on the porch. I was exhausted, but managed a knock on the door. The door opened and a woman stood there. I tried to speak, but I too passed out.
