Marrying a Jerk

Description

You had your dreams planned out, and you had the means to make them come true. But six months before graduating high school, all that hard work you put into fulfilling your plans became a waste of time. Because a big problem was imposed to you.

A problem that went by the name of Myungsoo.

By the time you turned twenty-one, you would be forced to marry under the pretext of a family promise. However, that idiot did a very stupid thing that accelerated the process. Next thing you knew, only one month was left before your destiny was sealed.

And as if that wasn't enough, you need to battle some other complicated matters.

Sounds fun, right?

Told through your POV.

I know the marrying-a-jerk theme is quite overused, but I wanted to contribute with my own version. Give it a chance, please? *bats eyelashes* As a disclaimer, if you've read/seen Goong, you might notice... two details (I think) that are inspired from the manhwa/series.

Prologue

2010

Hyoyeon threw her hands up in the air, her head snapping back dramatically.

Kang Misook jumped in surprise, his eyes widening. "Are... are you communicating with spirits?"

Hyoyeon gritted her teeth, scurrying around her shop. She began to crazily smell the fabrics she sold, closing her eyes and occasionally jumping around the room. "The spirit.... the spirit is talking to me! The spirit of the future!"

Mr. Kang, an elderly humble man, gasped. Gulping, he felt his heart pound nervously. "W-what are they saying, Ms. Fortune Teller?"

Hyoyeon fell to the ground, bringing her hands to her face. She began to lament out loud, in pain. "No... no! Grandpa! Don't let this happen to me!"

Misook stood up in shock. "Is that the spirit of my grandson?! Is he dead in the future?!"

"Grandpa, I'm alive but suffering!" Hyoyeon continued, pretended to be possessed by the spirit of Misook's grandson. She fell to the ground, and began to roll around the room, stopping herself with her hands. She traced her fingers on the wooden ground, until it landed on a coin that some customer had dropped. She held it up in the air. "This is the cause of my desperation! We're broke!"

Misook's lips parted in surprise. "Broke?! But how can that be?!"

"Somebody was scheming against us, Grandpa! Somebody stole everything from us!" Hyoyeon screamed. She flailed her hands up in the air, shaking her head. "But there is someone that can help us! A girl! A girl!"

"A girl! What is her name?" Misook exclaimed, desperate for the answer. "And what can she do?"

"Her name is Choi Sunja! You have to marry her to me by the time we both turn twenty-one, or my family will fall in the hole of depression! In the chains of poverty! Oh, grandpa! Please, help me!" Hyoyeon panted out. She widened her eyes and drew in a sharp breath before falling to the ground. She was breathing heavily as she slowly sat up. She was back to herself again. "Did the spirit I contact help you in any way, dear client?"

Mr. Kang began to nod his head furiously, shocked at the scene that had just unfolded in front of him. He took a big waft of money and handed it to the fortuneteller. "Thank you... thank you... my family can now be saved because of you."

He bowed low at Hyoyeon, who was weakly laying on the ground, before walking out of the shop.

As soon as she heard his limousine drive off, her demeanor changed. She sat up and smoothed down her stylish clothes before counting the money she'd received. She smiled in satisfaction, proud of her acting. I should become an Academy Award-winning artist, she told herself, heading back to the counter.

As soon as she saw Mr. Kang, she knew she could secure a moneymaking spot for her family. She knew he was the father-in-law of Mr. Kim Jongsook, owner of the worldwide famous Jin Communications, the best phone developing company. And Jongsook had a chaebol that could bring her own family lots of money.

The door opened once again, and I stepped in, carrying a Math book in my hand. "Aunt!"

"Sunja, what are you doing here?" she asked me, stuffing her money in a locked box.

"I came straight from school here. I need help with my Math homework, and Mom told me you could explain to me what I didn't understand," I explained, setting my book on her fortune telling table. I noticed the mess on top of it, and frowned. "Did you embezzle some other client?"

"I did not embezzle him, I just told him what he wanted to hear," she quickly answered. She decided to change the subject, sitting across from me. "The real question here is: since when do you do homework?"

I did not expect her to be so blunt with that question. I gave her a small, sheepish smile. "Since I realized that being the bottom student in class wouldn't allow me to study Medicine in Japan."

Her eyebrows shot up. "Medicine? Wow! You seriously want to work that hard just to become a doctor? I think there are enough of those already."

I chuckled, opening my book to the page I needed to review.

"Plus, I wouldn't worry so much about your future. I'm 100% sure you'll do well without having to work hard," she continued. A mischievous smile hinted in her lips as she checked her nails.

"Yah, I now you are no fortuneteller. No need to try to embezzle me too," I joked, pushing the book toward her. "This is what I don't understand."

"I'm telling you, you'll be wasting your time," she insisted before taking the book and inspecting the problem.

The protagonists...

You: Choi Sunja

(played by IU) You're very responsible, honest, and hard-working. You're very nice... too nice, in fact. Sometimes, for the sake of others, you put you well-being on the line.

Kim Myungsoo

Arrogant, bad-tempered, and selfish... the only things that make him so admired in school are his looks and his money. However, he seems arrogant because he's an "antisocial Neandaerthal that cannot communicate with people" (as you put it once). In other words, he's shy.

(There are, obviously, more characters. But these are the main ones)
