Magic

Sparkling World

Jonghyun stared blankly at the lined sheet of paper in front of him, twirling his pen between his fingers.

It had been months since he last wrote his most successful song ever, topping all the charts he could and winning so, so many prices for his talent in songwriting and singing. During that time his world had been filled with glittering sparkles, shimmering around him, giving him all the words and courage he needed and he had somehow managed to give that magical world to the people around him through his song and voice, making their world a little brighter. A little more magical.

Then it had disappeared. Gone. Just like he had never been special or talented at all.

His manager still believed in him though, and he was continuously prompting him to try. Try, try and try. He had done anything and everything he could, sending Jonghyun on vacations, taking him to beautiful places, giving him inspiring books. However, nothing helped.

Jonghyun sprawled out over his desk, throwing his pen away angrily. He was going nowhere, fast.

He had done everything in his might himself to get the feeling he had then back, but nothing ever worked and he felt ready to cry at the very thought of it. The magic in his world was lost and he wondered if it would ever return.

Suddenly there was the sound of keys scrambling in a lock and soon the front door was opened.

“Hello?”

Jonghyun groaned, both to let the person know where he was and because of the very person entering.

A blond-haired, young man poked his head inside his room, narrowing his eyes at all the wrinkled up papers tossed around the room in frustration. Kim Kibum was the man’s name and Jonghyun found him slightly scary. He was his manager’s assistant and had taken up the habit of visiting Jonghyun every day to monitor his progress, which was not anywhere near the finishing line, and every time he would get a more disappointed look at finding Jonghyun right where he had begun. And that was what scared him. Kibum's disappointed look. Because if he looked like that, Jonghyun wouldn’t even want to begin to think about how his fans’ faces would look.

“Still stuck?” Kibum asked.

Jonghyun grunted in response, continuing to lie atop his desk.

“Oh…”

There was that disappointed look again, worse than last time but not as bad as it would be the next day. Jonghyun bit his lip and lifted his head slightly, trying to change the subject.

“There’s coffee on the stove, just re-heat it if you’re going to stay.”

Kibum nodded, looking at the floor as he retreated to the kitchen and Jonghyun sighed. He knew Kibum was one of his fans as well and that he wanted so badly to see Jonghyun's next work, expecting it to be as wonderful as his first. But Jonghyun had already lost all his confidence. He couldn’t deliver what was expected of him because he had lost that world. He had misplaced the wonders he could see and he couldn’t find them again.

There was the distant sound of Kibum getting his coffee in the kitchen and then silence fell. Jonghyun supposed he had made himself comfortable on the couch in the living room as he always did, reading or watching TV.

He shook his head, straightening his back, and took up his staring contest with the paper again.

Jonghyun sat like that for hours, nothing but how much of a failure he was running through his mind as the clock ticked towards midnight. When it struck twelve he stood up and stretched with a yawn. He hadn’t gotten any further this day either, not that he had expected to anyway. The sparkles in his world were gone.

As Jonghyun exited his room to go to the kitchen for a glass of water he heard a sniffle and nearly got a heart attack. He had completely forgotten Kibum's existence in his apartment.

He made his way cautiously to the entrance of the living room and found the blonde sitting on the couch, legs pulled up to his chest and tears streaming down his cheeks from behind closed eyelids.

Jonghyun cleared his throat. “Are you okay?”

Kibum didn’t answer or open his eyes and that was when he realized that the other had earphones in his ears. Jonghyun approached him slowly, not taking his eyes away from the man on the couch.

There was something intriguing about his crying face, something that made Jonghyun's heart and stomach stir and he had to stop himself from reaching out to capture those crystal-like water drops on his fingers. It was magical.

Jonghyun sat down beside Kibum, regretting it immediately. The other started, looking up at him with wide eyes, drying his tears and straightening out his legs. The magic was gone.

“S-sorry.” Kibum mumbled, pulling out the earphones.

Jonghyun shook his head, trying not to look disappointed.

“Why were you crying?” He murmured.

Kibum bit his lip and looked down at the floor.

“It’s nothing, I just…” He took a shaky breath. “I-I was listening to your song a-and I just…”

He sniffled again and the tears came back, glistening, running down his cheek.

There it was again. That magic, that sparkle. Jonghyun grabbed Kibum's chin to turn his head towards him, staring intently at Kibum's beautiful crying face. The other blushed and tried to free himself but Jonghyun gripped on harder, putting his other hand on Kibum's shoulder.

And then it was back. Jonghyun's wonderful, magical world was back, filled with so many sparkles that he was blinded. And it was amazing.

“Kibum.” Jonghyun breathed and the mentioned looked up at his eyes.

Jonghyun's heart almost exploded with joy when he found the source of the wondrous magic again in the others chocolate brown orbs. Without even reflecting over it he leaned forward, pressing their lips together softly.

Kibum made a confused sound but didn’t push him away. Instead he pulled Jonghyun closer, permitting him entry to his mouth and his beautiful world as the quiet living room quickly filled with their loudening breaths. He felt the other melt into his hands as he let them slide down his neck, over his body.

Jonghyun was star struck. He could see the whole universe and its glittering secrets behind his closed eyelids. The colors of all the words ever uttered and the sounds of all the emotions ever felt. He was where no one else had ever been. No one else except himself a few months ago.

Jonghyun stood up at the speed of light as they broke apart to regain their breaths. Kibum blinked at him confusedly, his eyes dazed and his lips red. Jonghyun would have liked nothing more than to indulge himself in that rose-colored, pout again but he had finally found what he lost.

“I need to write!” He almost choked on the words with all the feelings welling up inside of him and rushed to his room, pen in hand before he even sat down at his desk.

Kibum joined him after some time, sitting on the bed and watching him silently as Jonghyun scribbled away, erasing something, writing it back, changing the words’ arrangements. When he finally finished, having emptied his mind of every word he knew, it was eight in the morning and his eyes felt like sandpaper from lack of sleep.

“I’m done.” He croaked and stood up only to flop down on his bed, exhausted with the effort and excitement.

Kibum got up, still as silent as he had been the entire time Jonghyun had been working, making his way to the desk and looking through the work done.

“We could make an entire album with this.” He murmured after a while.

Jonghyun made a humming sound, almost asleep. He faintly heard the rustle of papers as they were put down again, distantly felt a hand his hair and almost didn’t catch Kibum's parting words.

“Thank you.”

It took Jonghyun a few seconds to realize that the front door opened and closed, the keys locking it again. But when he did he shot up, sleep long since forgotten and raced to the door, fumbling to open it as fast as he could. He hadn’t managed to accomplish the most important task yet. He needed to catch Kibum. Make him his own.

He raced down all the floors, praying Kibum hadn’t already left the building. To his relief he found him just exiting the elevator in the lobby, skidding to a stop in front of him. Kibum looked at him with big surprised eyes and Jonghyun smiled widely.

“I love you.” He said breathlessly.

He saw Kibum swallow, staring at him like he was dreaming. Jonghyun chuckled and leaned forward, pressing his lips against Kibum's wonderful ones again, feeling the other melt once more as he put his arms around Jonghyun's neck.

The magic was back. Kibum was his.
