After the heartache her so-called first love arrogantly gifted her so, Suzy became adamant about falling in love again – whatever that is. Love, the four letter word became risible, obtuse. Almost everything she felt when she was with her ex-lover right there and then turned into oblivion, it meant nothing more than the sand scattered on the beach where their laughter once resonated with the waves, and it meant nothing less than the stars they gazed upon when he kissed her the promise of forever.

Suzy cried herself to sleep for a week letting loneliness take over her own vulnerability and it took her another week to finally establish a resolution; love is superficial, there is no such thing as soul mates, and the ablaze red, green, yellow, and orange paintings of affection never existed, not even once. Trust? What the hell is that? Loyalty? You’ve got to be kiddi-

“You need to forget about him.” Myungsoo silently broke the gloomy atmosphere in his cool icy voice which became comfortably warm when it entered Suzy’s ears. They were sat at their usual stuffy, cramped corner of the cafeteria that was at the time filled with the chatters and laughter of those who didn’t particularly matter around them, they were sat at that corner with the small rounded table and the two flamboyant green chairs that engulfed them into their very own world. He looked at her response and although she gave a nod in return, he could tell that behind her crescent-shaped eyes which matched her beautifully faked-smile that she nodded just for the sake of not discussing the matter further. He knew her this well at least.

Of course he knew her, sometimes even more than she knew herself. Their friendship started off simply- they were a friend of a friend of a friend, and after being thrown into the jungle they called college, just after Myungsoo was gifted his very own heartache that summer, Suzy became the most efficient distraction from the new world he was adjusting to. He was hesitant about the arrangement at first; Suzy was female and he wanted zilch to do with their kind, but everyone knew that she had a boyish charm to her despite her cute face and petite frame, and that boyish charm was good enough as an excuse to start a friendship with her.

 She became his listener who he could tell all sorts of bizarre and breathtaking stories there are of Physics and Maths and Chemistry and she wouldn’t mind just as long as she has someone to sit with every lunch time, even considering learning from him a bonus too. It was only a matter of months when the stories became bigger, more detailed, and more extravagant than the ones before and by then, Myungsoo knew that Suzy was no longer a distraction but the subject to his everyday life.

He’d notice the way she talks and oh how excitedly she talks about the latest episode of Dr. Who every Monday morning. He’d remember how her laugh sounded before she laughs again and he’d compare both, wondering why he didn’t find a girl who had her own signature laugh but a girl whose laugh was wishy-washy. Just like her personality. He’d time from time too, just to see hear her witty comebacks and sharp tongue and feel her light punches against his left arm. Most of all, he’d remind her that love is indeed superficial.

It’s a funny story actually; their friendship was established more or less on how similarly they detested the idea of love and the promises that came along with it. Myungsoo’s entrance to Suzy’s life is destiny’s reminder that perfect timing exists.
