Chapter 1

Hmm.. is it too late to call? He’d been staring at his cellphone for a while now, debating in his mind between fulfilling his desire to talk to a certain blonde and accepting her guaranteed wrath for disturbing her beauty sleep. Well, Jessica was pretty much known for her temper. But then again, so was Kim Heechul.

Aisshhhh, what am I doing? Just freaking call. Jeez. He swore if Kyuhyun saw him like this, staring at his phone like an idiot, unlike his usual self who never gave  a about others; the evil maknae would certainly laugh his off and not miss the chance to . Oh yeah, I’ll call right now alright. He started dialing. Actually, it wasn’t his fear of Kyuhyun bullying him. Or even his pride. He just missed her so much. With Bonamana promotion and their third Asian tour, not to mention his other consuming works; Heechul hardly ever saw her again (the last time would be SMTown LA a few weeks ago at least). When his plane finally landed in Korea,  Jessica had been the first thing that came to his mind. Well, that, and a certain growing rumor that’s been disturbing his sleeps at night for the last couple of weeks.

“Yobeoseyo?” he called out as soon as he heard a click.

“Yah! Kim Heechul! Do you know what time is it?!!” a grumpy voice that he knew by heart welcomed him well, with less friendliness than usual.

“Yah, Sica! You are beautiful already, what do you need sleep for?” he chuckled smugly. No truer words had ever been spoken. Even though it was Yoona that everybody titled ‘Prettier than Flower’, in his eyes, nothing can beat Jessica’s rare yet lovely nonetheless smile. Heechul still remembered that night when they won at the GDA last year. Jessica’s smile even with tears running down her cheeks was so beautiful that Heechul couldn’t help but to even turn away from whatever it was Hankyung’s saying to him, like a sunflower following the sun. Yep, it was that blinding.

Ah Kim Heechul was just really Jessica’s biggest fan huh?

“Yah, it’s been weeks and this nonsense is the first thing you said to me. Ugh, now I won’t be able sleep, no thanks to you.”

“Yeah, and thanks for that oh-so-warm welcome, Sica,” he started to get annoyed since she didn’t seem to be very happy with his call. Well, it’s 3 in the morning what did he expect?

Now it’s her turn to laugh, “Okay, okay. Mianhe, oppa. It’s just I’m so sleepy and you woke me up. Forgive me?” she said cutely over the phone.

Now, she’s using aegyo against me? Heechul couldn’t stop the corners of his mouth from tilting with a smile. “Since when are you not sleepy, Sica?” In the eight years he’d known her, all these little quirks he found about her (like how she absolutely hates cucumber and that sleep is one of Jessica’s joys in her busy life) were just too cute for him.

“You know me well, oppa. Wait, you’re back already? At the dorm?”

“Yep, just landed a couple hours ago.” Yea, he never even got to change from his travelling clothes before the thoughts of talking her occupied his mind.

“You’re not even tired, oppa?”

Heechul hesitated for a few seconds, should he tell her what exactly his reason for calling? That he’s beyond disturbed with the latest  “Sicachul” rumor which mind you, this time, had absolutely nothing to do with Kim Heechul.

 “Well, actually…” Gosh, it would be just too obvious. Aiish, this is definitely what he called Sica Effect, which had infected him like mad since forever, making him feel like a different Kim Heechul every time, which was not necessarily a good thing.

“Oppa? Are you still there?” Heechul snapped back to reality.

“Neh. It’s just… I can’t sleep.  Sing for me, Sica,” he sighed inside. Alright, so he chickened out. Ah, he just had no idea it would be this difficult talking to her about his annoyance on the tabloid rumors. Well, now at least he’d get to hear her sing then, which was his favorite pastimes, falling asleep to her voice.

“Bwoh?? Let me get this straight, oppa. You called me. At freaking three in the morning. Just to hear me sing?” ooops, she sounded pissed. Did she sound pissed? Arrrgghh, why?? Whenever with her it’s never going according to plan? I wanna make her miss me, not get pissed at me, jeez!

Aegyo to the resque, then? Nope, that won’t do. Maybe bribe?  “C’mon Sic, sing for me? Just that nice lullaby that I like. I missed your voice. Like you said, it’s been weeks. C’mon. I’ll swing by your practice room in a couple of days with your favorite strawberry favlova. How about that, huh?”

“Arasso, arasso.. but you better keep your promise oppa. I’m doing this just for you,” she started singing ‘Is It Love?’, one of his favorite so-called lullaby. Heechul smiled warmly, and slowly drifted up to sleep, all his worries swept away by her honey-like voice.

                “… I missed your voice … “ Jessica’s cheeks just reddened right away hearing his words on the phone. Man, good thing he’s not here in front of her then. Wait, Sica sighed in disappointment, he missed my voice, not me. Aish, Jung Jessica, stop this stupid train of thoughts.

“… I’ll swing by your practice room in a couple of days with your favorite strawberry favlova…” I’ll get to see him soon? Yay. Her disappointment all forgotten at the thought of seeing him again in person. Ah, just how lovestruck one can be?

Her smile practically lit her entire face, no more Ice Princess Jessica now. Heechul never failed in making her all goey inside, even after eight years. Which was kinda stupid, she should have gotten used to his Heenim Charm by now.

“Arasso, arasso..” she started singing softly to the phone, the silly smile still on her face. She missed him. She always does. And this simple thing that they have, her singing him his lullaby, is one of the special joy in life she’ll treasure always.

Jessica had been in love for quite some time. Well, if you can call eight years “quite some time”. She’d never met anyone like Heechul before. Well, hardly anyone can say that they know another “Kim Heechul”.  ‘One of a kind’ was just too simple of a word, inadequate really, to describe him. Everybody knew that. The mighty Kim Heechul who got the rest of the world eating from his palm. Who never gave a damn about what anybody else thinks of him. Who lives with an attitude no one can match. Who kept giving perfect example of bad AB blood type people (that’s from Ryeowook oppa, mind you). Who may act big bad and scary in front of people but is actually a big gooey bear inside. Yes, the last one is actually what got into Jessica and melted her frozen heart.

Many just didn’t know that there are more than meet the eyes when it come to Kim Heechul, at least if you bother to really look. He’s often misunderstood. Well, both him and her, really. But unlike her secretly hurting sometimes because of it (what with her having the most antis among SNSD and many of the people she metjust immediately taken intense dislike due to her attentiveness on shows and all), he just took it in his strides. “Sometimes, you shouldn’t expect  much. There’s nothing perfect in this world. Not even me (ha, how rare is that coming from the narcissistic yet fair Kim Heechul) and certainly not life,” that’s what he’d said, once when she’d asked him about their somewhat similar solemn predicaments. Jessica had been awed. He’d just seemed so tough. Yet, like any kind of superhero, he’s bound to break down sometimes. It’d finally come, so out of the blue, and Jessica’d been one to witness the heartbreaking scene.  Hangeng’s lawsuit had hit everyone hard and completely devastated his bestfriend. Heechul hadn’t come out of his room for days at the time, even taking up smoking and drinking; until she, s, and Sulli had decided to take drastic measure and planned an intervention. Of course, everyone had been scared. After all it was still the hot-tempered Kim Heechul, there’s no telling what he would do to anyone who doesn’t abide by his rules. But not as scared as the dire possibility of what he would have done to himself. In the end, for the sake of s and everyone that loved him, he’d come back to his usual self. But still Jessica would never forget the hot tears that fell on her shoulder and the silent sobs when she’d finally broke into his room and embraced him without words.

Yes, secretly he’s such a softie. A loving one at that. Look at how he’d diligently visited Kyuhyun-oppa at the hospital, almost everyday for months, back when Kyu’d been hospitalized with severe injuries due to the big accident. Also how he took care of Donghae-oppa, his favorite member, when his father passed away.

Ah, that Kim Heechul, really.

It warmed her heart thinking about him. About how caring he was actually to the people he loved, and just how lucky she, Jung Sooyeon, was to fall into that category, no matter how hard she wished that he loved her just a bit more than others. All this time, he probably, no, most definitely thought of her as a hoobae, albeit a special and close one. Or maybe not. Wasn’t he just as close to her as he to Sulli?

Ahh, she didn’t really wanna think about that right now. Why add another hit to her already quite bruised heart?

Jessica kept on singing softly to him, even with her thoughts in a jumble. Yet when she decided to take a break from her twisted thoughts, the lyrics just got to her. Again.

Heechul-oppa’s favorite lullaby. A love song. Ah, wasn’t it just perfect to describe what she actually felt? Sometimes she just couldn’t help but hoping, really desperately hoping, that Heechul secretly felt the same way. With all his attentiveness and care. Not to mention their simple moments that seemed to say much more than any word can. Like this one.

“… I’ll always love you …” then she heard a soft snore at the end of the line and smiled sweetly to herself, eyes full with love. She kept on humming for a few more minutes and ended it with a softly-whispered “Saranghae, oppa…”
