Foreword

Kai is your best friend since God knows how long. Both parents are close and you guys grew up together. You always stuck around Kai because your parents are always out on their business trips and so does Kai’s parents. Kai is popular at school because of his handsome look but you’re just no one. Your look isn’t bad but you’re the type of quiet and like to have a peaceful life. Kai can be a bad boy sometimes but doesn’t mean he plays with girls’ hearts. He only likes to tease and annoy people especially you but he also very protective on you too. He takes care of you like a big brother even both of you are the same age. Girls at school are jealous with you and everywhere you go, there’s always whispering bad things about you.

“Who does she think she is? Keep following Kai oppa here and there like she owns him.”

“I heard their parents’ are really close that’s why they always stuck together.”

“Poor him, he can’t have a girlfriend because of that .”

“Right! She is such a burden.”

School is finished and you were waiting for Kai in front of his class and that was the conversation you heard from Kai’s classmates. It annoyed you sometimes but you already used to it. You ignored those girls and pretended that you didn’t hear them because today is your special day and you didn’t want to ruin your mood. You waited for Kai silently in front of his class and minutes later an arm was thrown around your neck.

“Hi, Eunji!” It was Kai. You looked at him and he was beaming at you.

“Kai, what took you so long?”

“I was talking with my friends, sorry.”

“Nah it’s ok! Let’s go……..and please take your hand off of me.” You pushed his hand from your neck.

“Eh why? I always do that.”

“Look, those girls are ready to kill me any time.” You glance at Kai’s fangirls.

“Who cares? I’m here to protect you.” He threw his arm on you again.

“Tsk you can’t protect me forever!”

“Who said? I already promised that I’ll be there for you whenever you need me.”

“Even if you have to ditch your girlfriend?” You stopped walking and looked at him. Kai scratched his head in confusion.

“I don’t have a girlfriend.”

“You’ll have one soon and you won’t need me anymore.” You pouted and stared at the ground.

“Hey cheer up, you’re always my best friend no matter what happens.” He squeezed your shoulder lightly. The word best friend ached your heart and made you feel heavy. If only you know how I feel, Kai.

“Right!” You forced a smile.

“But talking about girlfriend……………………………..

He seemed hesitated so you nudged him.

“Spill! Didn’t you just say I was your friend? You can tell me anything.”

“You know Jiyeon? She’s in the same class with me.”

You remembered the girl with long hair and beautiful eye smile from Kai’s class. She’s quite popular at school and lately Kai’s been talking about her a lot. Compare to her, you were a trash.

“Yes what about her?”

“We exchanged numbers and she asked if I wanted to watch movie with her after school.”

You suddenly felt anxious.

“And what did you say?”

“I said I was busy. It was your birthday today and I can’t leave you alone.”

Your mind lightened up but something echoed in your mind.

Poor him, he can’t have a girlfriend because of that .

Is it really because of me? I can’t be selfish; I need to let him go.

“No Kai, why did you reject her? Isn’t she your crush? Just go and grab the chance, I’m fine.”

“But…you have to spend your birthday alone.”

“It’s ok! I’ll call my other friends.”

“You have other friends too? Since when?”

Right! Besides Kai and his group, you are friend with no one.

“I…I am not aloner, Kai. I..do of course!”

“Are you sure? Coz’ you don’t seem sure.” Kai raised his brow.

“Ah yes..i’m sure. Just go and ask her to be your girlfriend.”

Hearing the word girlfriend, Kai’s face turned into a slightly pink as he rubbed the back of his neck and gave a shy smile. In contrast, you were almost crying.

“So..i’m going to watch movie with her then. Sorry, Eunji ah!”

“Nah, you always spent my birthday with me; being absent this year won’t be a big problem. Just go!”

“Then I’ll go now. Be careful while walking back hom, arrajji? Take care.” He ruffled your hair and left, leaving you alone in front of the school gate. You watched him until he completely disappeared from your sighed. A single tear dropped on your cheek but you quickly wiped it away.

“Eunji!” A voice called your name.

“Kyungsoo oppa!” You turned to face him.

“Where’s Kai? Aren’t you going home with him?”

“Uh…he’s going to watch movie with Jiyeon.”

“Jiyeon??”

“Yes!”

Kyungsoo noticed your red eyes.

“Have you been crying??”

His question surprised you.

“What? No, I haven’t!” You looked at the ground avoiding his eyes.

“Don’t lie, Eunji. Was it because of Kai?”

“Huh?? No, I said I didn’t cry. Why would I?”

“Because he ditched you for another girl!”

His words hit your heart. You bit your lips trying not to cry in front of Kyungsoo but you failed to do it. Another single tear left your red eyes.

“Do you like Kai?”

“I……………..

“Do you love him?”

“I know I shouldn’t feel this way toward my best friend but I love him. I love Kai so much.”

“And why don’t you tell him?”

“He doesn’t feel the same way, oppa. If I confess, our friendship will become awkward.”

“But………..

“It’s ok. Being his best friend is enough, i’m satisfied and I hope you won’t say anything either. I’m leaving now, goodbye Kyungsoo oppa.” You waved at him and ran off to your house. It’s gonna be the worst birthday ever.
