Sinister Shadows

Description

"Once, man ruled the world.

Man strode amongst colossal monuments of steel and glass and aluminum, and pospered.

But our pride gave way to arrogance, and we began to deteriorate.

Our cities crumbled. Smoke billowed. Fire roared. Peace gave way to war.

And then They came...

Destroying everything."

“After all this time… It’s been you.”

“It to feel like your body is betraying you.”

“This is our world, and it’s ending one minute at a time. If we don’t fight for it, no one will.”

“I’m not going to let you keep doing what you’re doing… Torturing yourself and everyone around you. I won’t.”

“Besides, with you by my side… I think, maybe I can do this.”

“Pain doesn’t just show up in our lives for no reason.”

"I swear... In my next life, I'm going to be a bird. I'll be able to soar high above the skies and... And I'll never love the wrong person."

“I promise… Just promise me nothing will go wrong."

“Stop trying to fight your inner demons alone. We’re on the same side, let me help you.”

“How can we fight if we don’t even know what we’re up against?”

“They will learn to fear us.”

“Earth is a very fine place; it’s our home, and I’d hate to leave it. Especially now.”

The upcoming eclipse seems like no big deal to the average citizen, despite the rumors that the world's coming to an end.

But when twelve strangers find their lives being flipped upside down, they come to realize that there's more truth to the gossip than they would like to believe. As the world plunges into darkness around them, the battle between them and their seemingly undefeatable enemy tests their strength, courage, and trust. While they struggle with their feelings of distrust and anger, they find friends amongst their companions... and perhaps something more. Will they be able to put aside their differences and fight as one?

Foreword

It was dark outside, as it always was. There hadn’t been a sunrise or a sunset in those lands for hundreds of years, and there never would be again- the world was doomed to remain in cold darkness for the rest of the planet’s life and long after every last living soul had perished. Even then, when hardly any life lingered on the desolate wasteland, save for the inky shadows pressing against the sealed church he was holed up in.

How many centuries had it been since his brothers had been slaughtered? How many years since the extinction of his people? It was difficult to tell, even after a while all the days and nights had melted together, with no sun and no moon, simply darkness.

The only thing that kept him grasping to that last bit of life left in him was the desire to avenge his brothers’ deaths, and the duty to prevent such a tragedy from occurring again. He knew what awaited the humans when the planets all aligned and chaos reigned, he knew there was no way for the humans to win a battle against those demons that waited for him just on the other side of the church walls.

If he had known, if he and his brothers had simply stood as one… then perhaps his home wouldn’t now be a hole of emptiness devoured by shadow.

Although there was still hope for the humans, after so many years in darkness he was beginning to lose sight of the small chance Earth had for survival. It had been centuries since he’d last heard word from those that had survived the initial execution of his people and fled to Earth- blending easily with the human race since they weren’t so different themselves. He had always hoped that his fellow kin would see the signs, that they’d stand together and fight as one to defend their new home- everything he and his brothers had not done. He’d tried everything to contact them, even sending messages into the void, hoping they’d catch wind of the ‘alien messages’ and rush to decode them, but so far he’d gotten nothing in response.

He glanced down at the glass orb before him, illuminating the room with bright light and images of another world, of earth. He ran a hand over the cool surface, admiring the beauty of the world in the looking sphere, wistfully wondering what his life might have been like had he fled as well. Would he have had a family to care for him and a beautiful house to live in?

“It’s time,” a voice sounded behind him suddenly, forcing him to pull his hand away from the globe and turn to face the last of his brothers.

“Are you positive?” he demanded, his face tight with anger and worry. “Have you checked every possible calculation?”

The other man nodded, his expression grim as the candle in his hand wavered ever so slightly. “There’s no mistaking it. Even they have begun to stir.”

A dark look crossed his features as he turned away from his brother to face the sphere again. “As I feared,” he mumbled. “Even after hundreds of years, we’re not ready. We need more time!”

“I fear this may not work,” the other man said, his thoughts troubled as he moved to set the candle he held onto the table beside the globe.

“All we can really do is try to leave this place and pray to every deity that may be listening that things will fall into place.”

“I don’t believe there are any deities listening to us…”

“Yes… I fear that too.”
