Chapter 1: Saying Goodbye

"Only Pretending"

    || I was the kind of girl who loved to act. I was so good at acting, that I acted like someone who wasn't me for my whole life. But the thing is, I didn't know I was acting until now.

    It all started when I moved.

 

  "I can't believe you're moving!" My best friend tells me. Tears in her eyes, Liz hugs me tight. I hug her bck, and let go and run to the car, slamming the door.

I roll down the window and say, "I'll write you every day! I promise!"

My dad pulls out of my best friend's driveway for the last time.

On the way to our new home in Louisiana, my dad starts the conversation, "I'm sorry we had to leave everything behind, Ari. I had to get away from that horrible life."

"Well your life might've been bad, but mine was perfect," I say sourly, leaning my head on the car window.

My dad sighs and keeps on driving. That's all we say to each other until we reach a sign that says, "Welcome to Louisiana." ||
