Peter Pan

Peter Pan

Jongdae peeked inside the classroom before entering to make sure that his best friend was already there. A playful smile appeared on his face when he saw that Namjoo was indeed, already there, and that she was really concentrated reading a book. He also noticed that she was the only one of the class that had already arrived, so it was even more perfect. Now, he could play his prank on her without anyone runing it.

He tip toed inside the classroom, trying not to make noise, and held back his laughter as she didn't even noticed he was already standing behind her. She was too concentrated in her book to notice.

"BOO" he said as leaned into her ear. Namjoo jumped startled and almost threw her book away. She turned around slightly embarrassed and angry, and saw Jongdae holding his stomach and laughing.

"YAH!" Namjoo said as she hit his arm with her book so that it would hurt more. Jongdae just continued laughing as he wiped a tear that fell from his eye "When will you stop being so childish?"

"Never" he said as he stuck his tongue out and laughed once again. Namjoo only shook her head, but also smiled. It wouldn't be a normal day without Jongdae playing childish pranks on her. However, she didn't dislike it. If he wasn't how he was and she wasn't how she was, they probably wouldn't be friends. She liked that Jongdae and she didn't want him to change.

Namjoo continued reading her novel and Jongdae took his seat next to her. She knew it was only matter of seconds before he would start bothering her again. That guy couldn't stay quiet for too long.

"What are you reading?" he suddenly asked as he stared at her.

"It's a romantic novel" she simply replied with her eyes still glued in her book. "It's my favorite book"

"I like Peter Pan better" Jongdae said and Namjoo suddenly chuckled. She put her book down and looked at him with a curious face. She wondered why had he chosen Peter Pan as his favorite book.

"That's a book for kids" she said, but he didn't seem to mind.

"Well, I like Peter Pan's character" he replied as he put his hands behind his head "A guy who is determined to never grow up. Just like me"

Namjoo couldn't help but chuckled once again when he said that.

"The difference is that he is indeed a child. You are just childish" she said and Jongdae pouted. Namjoo looked at him and couldn't help but think that he looked really cute when he did that. She blushed slightly at the thought of that and turned her head to look out of the window so that he wouldn't notice her red cheeks. When had she started falling in love with him? She didn't even know.

.........................................................

"Namjoo" Jongdae said during lunch time, while he ate his sandwich. "Let's go to my house after classes so that we can do homework together"

"Don't speak with your mouth full, Jongdae" she scolded him as he was talking, while he munched on his sandwich. Jongdae then covered his mouth with napkin and then swallowed his food, before speaking again.

"So what do you say?" he asked with a smile

"You want me to go to your house so that you can play while I do our projects" she said as she crossed her arms in front of her chest and raised and eyebrow. Jongdae looked at her with puppy eyes and pouted like a little kid once again.

"Of course not!" he said, even though they both knew it was partially right. At first he would just play around while Namjoo started doing their projects, but he would eventually start helping her and they would both work until they finished their work. "You know I work, Joo!"

Namjoo then just sighed defeated and then smiled.

"Fine, I'll go to your house after classes" she and he smiled brightly.

"Yay! You know you are the best right?" he asked excited as he pulled her into a tigh embrace. Namjoo froze in her spot and blushed suddenly. Her heart was beating faster and she couldn't help but smile. Jongdae, being Jongdae, was a person who easily expressed his feelings so it was not awkward for him to suddenly hug his best friend. However, Namjoo was surprised and flustered everytime he did it.

"You tell me that all the time" she said, looking down at her food shyly, trying to act cool.

"But, you know I mean it" he said and she smiled once again.

........................................................

Namjoo simply loved the moments she could spend with him, just the two of them. Without anyone else. It was really precious for her. Those times, they could be themselves. Even if he was oblivious to her feelings towards him, it made her really happy to be able to be with him. What she never imagined was that that was going to change one day.

It started off as a normal day. She arrived early as usual and sat in the same spot as ever and began reading her book. Jongdae soon arrived and after teasing her and bothering her so that she would pay attention to him and not to her book, the teacher arrived. What was different that day was the he didn't came alone.

"Class pay attention" the teacher "Today we have a new student, please treat her well"

"Good morning everyone" the girl said brightly as she bowed down and smiled towards her new classmates. "My name is Jung Eunji"

Namjoo only smiled towards the new girl. She seemed really nice and maybe they could be friends.

"Please take a seat next to Jongdae" the teacher said "Jongdae, raise your hand"

Namjoo turned to look at her best friend and was surprised to see that he was staring at the new girl with a huge grin on his face. Eunji walked towards her seat next to him and Namjoo could swear she saw his cheeks turning slightly red. She also noticed how he shyly looked down when she started a conversation with him.

Namjoo only looked at them and felt a strange feeling inside her heart. Something that was bothering her and she couldn't explain what it was. The only thing she knew was that she disliked that feeling very much. Because it was painful to see her best friend's attention being stolen.

From that day on, Jongdae started spending more time with Eunji. Jongdae insisted that the three of them should hang out together and Namjoo agreed. However, it wasn't the same since it wasn't just the two of them anymore. She didn't dislike Eunji's company, since she was really nice, but she did dislike the feeling she had everytime she saw her and Jongdae together.

She couldn't help but just sigh everytime she saw them laughing together or making fun of each other. Eunji was like the perfect match for him and even she had to admit it. It hurt, because it was how Namjoo and him used to be. It was as if her best friend was slowly being stolen from her and she couldn't do anything about it. And yeah, she had to admit that she was jealous.

"Namjoo ah" Jongdae told her once when they were alone. He seemed really happy and nervous at the same time and she was curious about what could have made him like that "I think I like Eunji ssi"

Namjoo gasped surprised when she heard that and she could just smile faintly when she saw Jongdae's excited smile. In that moment, her heart broke into little pieces. Her Peter Pan had found his Wendy and his heart had been slowly stolen by her. And the worst part was that she couldn't even cry about it. Because she had to be happy for her best friend.

...........................................................

Amidst her problem with her feelings for Jongdae, she received good news. A letter adressed to her that came from America arrived that afternoon to her house. She hadn't expect it since she had almost forgotten about it. However, when she saw it, her heart jumped in excitment. She inmediately ripped the envelope and read the letter inside.

"Congratulations, you've been accepted" she read and her eyes widened in shock and in happiness. She suddenly jumped like a little kid and squealed in happiness. Her dream had always been to become a singer, so she had applied to one of the most prestigious music schools in America. It made her really excited and proud to know that she had been accepted.

However, there was something that didn't let her be truly happy about the news. How was she going to tell Jongdae that she was leaving Korea and she didn't even know when she was coming back? And how was she going to be able to say goodbye to him?

The next day at school, she was still thinking about it. She bit her nails as she was not sure if she should tell or not. She knew he deserved to know. After all, they were best friends and he deserved to know that she was leaving. However, not telling him would make the goodbye a lot easier.

"Hey Namjoo" she suddenly heard someone calling her name and it made her snap out of her thoughts. She looked up and smiled when she saw it was her friend Sungjae. Even though she spent most of her time with Jongdae, she still considered Sungjae as one of her closest friends and she trusted him very much. He was like a brother to her.

"Hi Sungjae" she simply said with a faint smile

"Is everything all right? You seem down" he said as he noticed her expression. She could only sigh in response. She then thought it wouldn't hurt to tell him since she really needed to share it with someone.

"Do you remember that I applied for a music school in America?" she asked and he nodded with smile

"Of course! You wouldn't shut up about it" he joked and she only rolled her eyes. He laughed for a while and then stopped "But what about it?"

"Well... I got accepted" she said and his eyes widened in shock

"That's great, Namjoo!" Sungjae said happily. Namjoo could only smile faintly once again and he noticed that she wasn't as happy as she should be "Why don't you seem happy about it?"

"I am really!" she said "The problem is... I don't know if I should tell Jongdae about it"

"What? Are you kidding?" he asked in shock "Jongdae is your best friend! He should have been the first one to know!"

Namjoo sighed and then looked around. She then saw Jongdae from afar and noticed that he was chatting happily with Eunji. She could only smile, seeing how happy he was. She didn't want to be the reason why that smile would be erasen from his face.

"I don't want to upset him with the news" she said looking down. Sungjae just sighed and shook his head.

"You are just afraid of saying goodbye to him... because you know it'll hurt." he said and she looked up at him, quite surprised. She hated to admit it, but he was also right.

...............................................................

Jongdae arrived to his classroom that day, hoping to see Namjoo, but felt disappointed when he didn't see her. He knew that she was never late to class, so she was going to be absent that day. Again. It had already been three days that Namjoo hadn't come to classes and Jongdae was starting get worried. What if she was sick? He had been such a bad friend that it hadn't even occured to him to call to her house to see if she was ok.

So, after classes he decided to go to her house to visit her. He decided to bring his books and everything that they had done in class for the past three days so that she could catch up if she was sick. He walked with a smile on his face, hoping to see his best friend. He knew she would happy to see him as well.

When he arrived to her house, he knocked on the door slightly and waited for a while with a smile on his face. After some minutes, the door opened and Jongdae was happy to see Namjoo's mom. However, she seemed to be surprised to see him.

"Hi Mrs. Kim" he said and she smiled

"Oh Jongdae, how are you?" she said as she pulled him into a hug.

"I'm fine, thanks" he said "But, I wanted to know if Namjoo was ok since she hadn't been going to school for the past three days"

Mrs. Kim expression suddenly changed when he said that. She looked at him and sighed. He looked truly worried about Namjoo's health and it was not fair for him to not know the truth.

"Namjoo didn't tell you anything, did she?" she asked with a sorry face and Jongdae looked at her confused

"Tell me what?" he asked with his head slightly tilted. Namjoo's mom could only sigh.

"Namjoo got accepted to that school in America" she said and Jongdae's eyes widened in shock "She left three days ago"

"What?!" he asked, still in disbelief. He suddenly felt as if a big rock had suddenly fallen over him. He was so shocked, that he couldn't think properly. A part of him was happy, because she it was her dream. Another part of him was angry, because she didn't tell him anything. But he was mostly sad. Because his best friend left. He still couldn't process that.

"Why didn't she tell me anything?" he asked hurt and Mrs. Kim looked at him sadly. She could tell how hurt he was and she knew her daughter hadn't been fair with him.

"She didn't want to upset you with the news" she replied and Jongdae simply scoffed. He felt a great pain in his heart, because he felt betrayed by his own best friend.

"Well, I'm more upset because she didn't tell me anything" he said sternly, before bowing respectfully at Mrs. Kim and then leaving.

As he walked towards his house, he felt tears rolling down his eyes. Tears of frustration and tears of sadness. He couldn't believe his best friend would just leave without saying goodbye. He didn't deserve that.

Months passed by and Jongdae didn't feel mad at Namjoo anymore. After thinking about it for a long time, he realized it would have been hard for her to say goodbye to him. And he also felt bad, because for the past months they had drifted away slightly because he had been spending a lot of time with Eunji.

He now found himself missing Namjoo more than ever. He felt as if a part of him was missing. He missed her smile. He missed her scolding him whenever he did something childish. He missed playing pranks on her and seeing her reaction. He simply missed being with her.

He sighed as he walked inside his room. He took a seat on his chair in front of his desk and took out something that he had almost forgotten. It was an old diary he used to write in. His dream had always been to be a writer, so he thought a good beginning would be to write everything he felt in that diary.

He brushed off the dust on its cover and look through it. A smile suddenly appeared on his face as he read what he wrote.

Today I played another prank on Namjoo again... this time she got really mad, but her reaction was cute. And yeah, my left eye is black now, but it was worth it.

I could swear I saw Namjoo blush today. I still wonder why.

Today we went to see a play. It was Peter Pan. After today, I want to be like him. I do not wish to grow up. Namjoo says she'll be Tinkerbell them.

And there were more pages filled witht thoughts of his daily life. Jongdae couldn't help but smile at everyline he read. He also realized that everything he wrote for the past years was all about him and Namjoo, no one else. He also realized he had stopped writing a several months ago. He then understood that he had stopped writing when he met Eunji. Probably because he had stopped spending so much time with Namjoo and that's why he didn't feel like writing anymore.

He sighed. It took him a while to realize that Eunji was only a good friend to him. He thought he liked her, but it wasn't like that. However, ever since Namjoo left, he couldn't stop thinking about her. At first, he thought it was because he missed his best friend and that was partially true, but now that he was reading his diary full of memories of him and her, he came to the realization that she had always been more important to him that he had even wanted to admit.

A faint smile appeared on his face as he suddenly realized how much of a fool he was, thinking he needed to find a Wendy when Tinkerbell had been there all along. He suddenly took a pen and went to the last page of the diary and wrote something, before putting it inside his back and storming out of him room.

........................................................................................

Namjoo sighed as she finished doing her assignment. It had been some months since she arrived to that place and she was now more used to living there, but she still missed her home. She missed her parents, her friend, and of course, she missed Jongdae. Now that she was doing her assignmet alone, she missed those times she used to go to his house and they would do their projects together.

She sighed and then smiled sadly when she suddenly thought of it. He probably already knew she left and he was probably still very mad because she left without telling him. Maybe he was already with Eunji, or maybe he had found another Wendy. It pained her to not know anything about her best friend.

"Namjoo" someone said as she knocked on her door to call her attention even if the door was opened. Namjoo turned around and smiled when she saw her american friend. "Someone wants to see you"

"Who?" she asked with curiosity. She wasn't expecting anyone.

"He didn't say his name" her friend said shrugging.

Namjoo then decided to walk out of her room with a lot of curiosity. Who was possible there to see her? He doubted it was her parents since they visited her just a month a ago. Then who could it be?

When she walked outside to the campus and looked around confused. Everyone around seemed familiar to her so she was really confused. She didn't see anyone that could have possible come to visit her. Was it a joke?

She then suddenly felt a tap on her shoulder and she turned around startled. Her eyes widened in shock and she covered unable to speak when she saw her best friend standing in front of her with a smiley face. She didn't think it twice and hugged him tightly. He hugged her back and Namjoo could feel how the tears were threatening to fall.

"What are you doing here, Jongdae?" she asked, still shocked to see him.

"I came to see my best friend, is it wrong?" he asked chuckling and she shook her head.

"No, of course not" she said "But I thought you would still be mad at me..."

She then looked down sadly and he could only sigh.

"Truth to be told, I was really mad at you for couple of months" he said and Namjoo couldn't help but feel really bad for not telling him anything. "However, I realized that I missed you too much to be mad at you"

Namjoo was surprised by this, but then smiled brightly before hugging him once again. Jongdae's heart beated fastly as he felt really warm inside. He knew that was what he had been waiting for so long. To meet her once again. Just to be with her.

"Tell me about you" she suddenly and he chuckled. She hadn't changed one bit. "How has your life been?"

"Well, I realized something important" he said with the same old chidlish tone. Namjoo couldn't help but giggle and then look at him with curiosity.

"What?" she asked

"I no longer like Peter Pan" he said and Namjoo's eyes widened in shock. That was something he had never expected to hear from him. "What?! Why?!"

"Because he chose Wendy, when Tinkerbell was there all along" he said and Namjoo looked at him confused and expecting him to continue "But I realized I fell in love with my Tinkerbell"

Namjoo's eyes widened in shock. Realization hit her and her heart began beating faster. Her cheeks slowly turned pink and she looked down suddenly. Was he really saying he fell in love with her? Or was it just another one of his silly pranks?

"Is this another prank of yours?" she asked, hoping his answer wouldn't be yes. Jongdae only chuckled and then cupped her face, making her heart jump suddenly when they looked at each other's eyes.

"I guess it's my fault that you don't believe me for being such a prankster" he said chuckling, but then put a serious face. He then suddenly leaned forward and planted a soft kiss on her lips. Namjoo felt as if her heart was about to explode and the butterflies in her stomach didn't let her think properly. When they pulled apart, he only smiled and she shyly looked down.

"Is not a prank Namjoo, it's the true. After being apart from you for such a long time, I realized that you were always the one in my heart" he said  sincerely and took her hand before putting it on his chest. Namjoo then could feel his fast heartbeats and she smiled.

"And if you still don't believe me" he said as he looked inside his bag and took something out. Her eyes widened in surprise when she saw it was his precious diary. She had always wanted to read it, but he never let her. He always said she would only read it when it was published as his first best seller. "Read this"

"Wow are you really allowing me to read it?" she asked in shock and he smiled and nodded. Namjoo opened on a random page and began reading. A smile suddenly appeared on her face. She flipped through the pages and began reading everything and the smile wouldn't go away. She chuckled at some of the parts and she also frowned at others. However, she realized that there was something that all of those pages had in common.

"All of this is about..."

"You and me" he replied with a smile and Namjoo couldn't help but smile as well, with her cheeks turning slightly pink again. Now she knew, it wasn't one of his pranks. He really meant it and it made her smile widely. She then opened the last page and noticed that it was something that he wrote recently and it brought another smile to her face.

How blind was this Peter Pan to look for a Wendy, when you Tinkerbell were there all along...

I now realize where my heart truly lies...

I'm going to look for you Tinkerbell...

Forever, your Peter Pan.
