If the World Ends

“Hyukjae?” Donghae asked quietly.

The dancer grunted when he heard his name being called, not picking up immediately who was calling him. He was sitting cross legged before his laptop, staring transfixed at the text on the screen. “Yes?”

He felt someone looking over his shoulder. “Hyukjae, I just wanted to ask—what are you reading?”

Hyukjae’s eyes widened and he gave a kind of half scream when he realized who he was speaking too. He hastily closed the windows on his laptop (which incidentally contained a very graphic scene that may or may not have involved Donghae) and turned around to face his best friend, his face pale.

Donghae blinked at the older man, confusion on his face. “Was it something about me? I saw my name.”

Why yes. It was about you and me, actually. . On a bed. It sounds like we were ing too.

“No. I mean yes. It’s fanfiction. About you and Siwon,” Hyukjae made up quickly.

The brunette looked shocked. “You read about me and Siwon? But I saw your name!”

Hyukjae’s heart started beating faster. “Yeah. Oh yes. I was the bad guy. I was um, trying to steal you away from Siwon,” he lied, feeling himself growing hot under the collar. “That’s why. A-anyway, you were saying?”

Donghae scratched his head, and then ran his hand through his wavy brown locks. “I heard from Yesung hyung earlier…that the world is supposed to end tomorrow?”

That was unexpected.

Hyukjae narrowed his eyes and turned back to the laptop. “Really? I didn’t know…” he muttered to himself, pulling up a search engine and typing in the words. “Why do you ask, anyway?”

A red flush begin to spread over Donghae’s cheeks. “I was just c-curious,” he stuttered.

The other man snorted, not believing Donghae’s words at all. “Rubbish, Hae. Let me guess, death by aliens?”

He heard a slight giggle from the other man and smiled involuntarily. “Seriously? You really think the world is going to end with an alien invasion?” he queried, clicking on a few links.

“It’s death by major tsunami actually,” Donghae leaned forward and rested his head against Hyukjae’s shoulder, pressing his soft cheek against his and making the older man’s eyes widen at the contact. “I think aliens have better things to do than come and kill all of us,” he mused thoughtfully.

Hyukjae chuckled, trying to mask the discomfort that their skinship produced. He magnified the words on the screen so that both of them could read it clearly. “See for yourself,” he replied.

Donghae lifted his head off Hyukjae’s shoulder (much to the older man’s chagrin) and went to stand next to him instead, leaning over and mouthing out the words on the screen. Hyukjae’s eyes briefly ran through the text uninterestedly. He didn’t believe in any doomsday prophecies and didn’t have any patience for them. The article talked about the world ending the next day, along with some theories as to how it would happen and why it would happen.

It sounded like a load of crap.

“Well, that was enlightening,” he couldn’t help but remark dryly when he had finished reading the article. “It sounds exactly like something that will not happen.”

“On the contrary,” Donghae muttered quietly, his eyes still on the screen. “It sounds like something that could happen.”

Hyukjae nodded and then caught himself. “Wait, what? You actually believe this?” he gaped, watching as Donghae folded his arms across his chest with a serious expression on his face. He knew Donghae was the type who believe in aliens and ghosts but this was ridiculous. “Donghae, this is bull.”

Donghae pouted. “You don’t know that! It’s better to be safe than sorry anyway,” he reasoned. “What if it’s true and we really do die tomorrow?” he turned and walked distractedly out of the room, all the while muttering to himself. “I have to start preparing a to-do list for before the world ends—visit my mom and tell her I love her, camwhore with Siwon, finish a whole plate of Kyuhyun’s cooking without barfing…oh, good night Hyukjae!” He stopped at the door and smiled at the stunned man. “Thanks for your help!”

The dancer shook his head as Donghae shut the door softly behind him, unable to believe the conversation they had just had. Sihae fanfics, end of the world speculations, and Donghae’s bucket list?

“Yeah right,” Hyukjae mumbled to himself, turning his attention back to his laptop and reopening the fanfic he had been reading. “Only you would believe in this.” Silence. “If the world really ends though, I might as well tell Donghae I like him. We’re both going to die anyway.”

Hyukjae’s jaw dropped as he surveyed the scene in front of him. It was the scheduled doomsday and potentially their last breakfast—which wasn’t anything special really. Porridge. Juice. Toast. And—what the actual blue heart shaped notes for breakfast?

“Are they edible?” he gaped, picking up one that had been left untouched.

“Of course not ,” Jongwoon scoffed. He picked up one and practically waved it in Hyukjae’s face. “Donghae’s doing. He thinks the world is ending and so sent all of us love notes.”

Hyukjae choked on the toast he had been chewing. “L-love notes?”

“Well, it sounds as sappy as one.” Jongwoon cleared his throat and started to read. “Dear Jongwoon hyung, should the world end today, know that I love you so much! Insert caret, punctuation mark, caret. I’ll miss all the times we spent together discussing the eccentricities of turtles and dogs. Uh, insert a less than three, then—”

“Okay that’s enough,” Hyukjae interrupted, unable to stand the way Jongwoon was reading the note. He yanked it, none too gently out of his hand. “I can read it for myself, thanks.”

Ignoring Jongwoon muttering about how turtles were politer than monkeys, Hyukjae quickly read through the note, feeling crosser and crosser as he looked through each line.

Dear Jongwoon hyung, should the world end today, know that I love you so much! ^.^ I’ll miss all the times we spent together discussing the eccentricities of turtles and dogs. <3 Honestly though, I still think you shouldn’t polish Ddangkkoma’s shell all the time, it might not be good for him~~ Anyway, I’m glad I met you and we’re in Super Junior together ^^ The times we spent together will always remain in my heart until I die. You’ll always be one of my closest brothers and I hope we see each other in the afterlife! :D I love you hyung! ~~ ^^

Lots of love

Donghae! <3

And surrounding the words were some scribbled hearts and a drawing of a fish.

Hyukjae might have laughed if it wasn’t for the fact that Donghae said I love you to Jongwoon twice. The content of the note was so Donghae he wanted to punch the brunette in his face. “Did he write anymore?” he said, shoving the note back at Jongwoon.

“He wrote one for everyone,” Jongwoon told him, pointing at Ryeowook and Kyuhyun. “We came for breakfast and found the notes on top of our toast. That sneaky bastard,” he chuckled.

Hyukjae chewed his lower lip. “Where’s mine?” he asked, looking at the table. All the notes had already been claimed by their respective owners, but his wasn’t there. “He didn’t forget mine, did he?” he asked, almost warily, and a little hurt. How on earth could Donghae possible forget about him?

Before anyone could reply they heard a door crashing opened, alerting the members to the presence of Donghae, who bounded into the room and immediately strangled Jongwoon in a hug. “Hi Hyung, you like my note?” he asked cheerfully. Then he caught sight of Ryeowook and ran to him, pulling the eternal maknae into hug as well. He looked way too happy for someone who thought the world was going to end, Hyukjae thought, watching rather sourly as Donghae then attacked Kyuhyun. He was feeling rather left out, seeing as Donghae hadn’t thought to include him in his end of the world affection spree. Turning away, he caught sight of the other members from the other dorm in the kitchen doorway, all holding onto their respective notes.

“For goodness’ sake, did everyone get a card but me?” he couldn’t help but exclaim to Jungsoo, who was the closest.

“You didn’t get one?” Jungsoo asked as Hyukjae snatched the card out of his hand to read.

“Evidently not,” he snapped.

Instead of being annoyed, Jungsoo chuckled. “Are you jealous, Hyukjae?”

“Jealous? Who’s jealous? Of course I’m not jealous. Why would I be jealous, that’s a ludicrous idea…” Hyukjae’s defensive words trailed off into a mumble as he read Donghae’s note to Jungsoo. When he was done, his blood was boiling.

Dear Jungsoo hyung

You’re the best hyung ever! I love you so much! <3 I’ll miss you when we all die! You took care of me so well and I wish I can repay you as a dongsaeng should. I trust you with my life hyung~~You’re always there for me when I’m upset. <3 Talking with you always bring me a sense of peace J I will wish for you to stay healthy until the end of today when we all die, and to stay healthy as well in the afterlife! ^^ wherever we go, I’ll hope we’ll be together :D I’m glad we met and are in Super Junior together ^^ You’re the best leader, hyung, and brother one can ask for! I love you!! ^^ kekekeke but don’t show anyone this note okay? They might get jealous if you do ^____^

Lots of love

Donghae!!! <3

Hyukjae handed the note back to Jungsoo, a huge scowl on his face. Really, was it so necessary to add so many less than threes and emoticons?

“Sweet, isn’t he?” Jungsoo said with a sugary smile.

“Very,” Hyukjae nearly snarled.

It was so sweet, he had started contemplating violence at the second less than three.

“Hyukkie!” he heard someone bellow behind him. Arms grabbed him from behind in a back hug, anchoring around his chest. He felt a familiar soft cheek press against his as Donghae rested his chin on his shoulder. “Happy Doomsday, Hyukjae!”

Hyukjae turned slightly to stare pointedly at him. “Yes, happy doomsday to you too. Where’s my doomsday card?”

Donghae didn’t reply, merely smiled and pranced off to hug Siwon.

Hyukjae glared at his back and turned off, thinking that maybe some childish cold shoulder would do the job better than violence.

Hyukjae tried to smile, but it turned out more like a grimace as Donghae slapped Siwon’s . Again.

“You know, maybe I should let you see the Sihae fic I was reading last night,” he suggested to Donghae sarcastically. “It has great .”

“That’s a good idea,” Donghae said brightly. “I’ve read all the Eunhae ones.”

Hyukjae practically choked on his own saliva at Donghae’s words, and had to be slapped on the back by Ryeowook. As he was hacking and coughing up a lung, he distinctly heard Donghae’s parting words, “Bonus points if you can find one where I top.”

Hyukjae stared disbelievingly at his retreating back and shook his head.

“Did he ask you to recommend him some fanfiction?” Ryeowook asked curiously.

“Yes?” Hyukjae almost whimpered.

“Oh.” Ryeowook was silent for a moment, and then leaned into whispered “If you like, I know some Kyuhae ones too. Kyuhyun was slapping Donghae’s earlier.”

Hyukjae considered going off to find the maknae to kill him, but decided to stay and ask Ryeowook what was on his mind instead.

“Why’s he doing so much skinship?” he couldn’t help but whine. “We’re not even on stage or recording any performance today. It’s not like the fans would see.”

“Since when does he let that stop him?” Ryeowook demanded. “He loves skinship. It seems like his hand is always attracted to people’s butts. Yours in particular.” Then he took a step back and shook his head. “Even though you don’t really have a to speak off. Er, no offence, hyung.”

Hyukjae’s hands instinctively flew to his . “Yah!” He protested. “At least Donghae has no complaints!” He chewed his lower lip. “Although to be honest, he hadn’t molested me at all today,” he confessed. “I mean, he felt almost everyone up. Everyone. But he totally avoided my .” He looked so sad it was almost funny.

“Well that’s odd,” Ryeowook said, though he didn’t look really concerned. “Are you jealous or something, though? I thought you were pissed because Donghae was doing so much skinship—but you’re upset because he’s not doing it with you, right?”

His hyung shifted uneasily, because the eternal maknae was right. “A little,” he mumbled. “I mean, I usually have to pry his hands off me, and now it’s as if I’m not even there at all.”

“Maybe he got tired off slapping runways,” Ryeowook suggested.

Hyukjae paused, digesting his words. Then his eyes narrowed as he caught on.

“You did not just call my a runway.”

The van was awkwardly silent on the way back to the dorm.

Hyukjae sat up front, fuming quietly to himself. He had never been this frustrated in his life. Never. Frustration reached a whole new level when he saw Donghae kissing Sungmin earlier.

Granted, it was just a friendly peck. On the cheek. Not even on the lips. Certainly not of the French variety. But Hyukjae was pissed all the same, because it was still a kiss. And Donghae hadn’t stopped at Sungmin too. He kissed nearly everyone in the band. On the cheek, that is.

He swallowed, trying to quench the jealousy he felt. Once again Donghae had acted as if he wasn’t there. Hyukjae was beyond angry now. He was baffled, actually. Donghae seemed to take the whole doomsday thing seriously, so why was he seeming to avoid Hyukjae? Shouldn’t he be trying to spend more time with him?

“I hate you, Lee Donghae,” he muttered under his breath.

“What was that?” Jungsoo, who was next to him, asked.

“Absolutely nothing that concerns you, hyung.”

“Touchy,” Jungsoo muttered. “I didn’t appreciate you shoving me back there, by the way.”

Hyukjae said nothing. Jungsoo was referring to the incident that took place back at the SM Building. Hyukjae had came across Donghae kissing Jungsoo on the cheek, and then giving him a hug—a hug that lasted nearly thirty seconds, which was thirty times too long for Hyukjae. Somehow, he’d lost his head, gone up and pulled Donghae away from his hyung, and nearly pushed their leader down the stairs.

It explained the awkward atmosphere in the van. Hyukjae’s bad mood hung around the members too, like a noxious cloud.

The van arrived at the dorm without further conversation. Hyukjae immediately bounded out, envisioning an evening of One Piece and his iPod, only to find his path blocked by another man.

Hyukjae scowled when he realized who it was. “What?” he snapped.

Donghae gave him a small, shy smile. “Hyukjae, can I come over to your room later?” he asked softly, as the members filed past them towards the elevator.

Hyukjae’s eyes bugged out, unable to believe it. Donghae had basically ignored him the whole day, and now he wanted to go over to his room? The nerve.

“I have plans,” he said coldly.

Donghae pouted. “Please, Hyukjae? I want to spend time with you.”

“We did have the whole day to spend together, but you chose to hang out with the other members,” Hyukjae said acidly.

“But I want to spend time with you now!”

The earnest way in which Donghae said those words melted the ice around Hyukjae’s heart. A little. The dancer sighed, avoiding the brunette’s pleading eyes. He was fighting a losing battle. “Alright,” he relented. “Come over later.”

Donghae smiled. “Thank you.”

Well, Hyukjae thought as he followed his best friend to the elevator. Donghae always had priority over One Piece and music anyway.

Hyukjae didn’t know what time to expect Donghae, but he made up his mind not to be too nice to him. He was still sore over Donghae ignoring him earlier. Not to mention all those skinship—

No. He refused to think about them.

He sat on his bed, trying to read, but couldn’t focus on the content. He glanced at the clock repeatedly, and saw that it was past eight already. Was Donghae ever coming?

Next to him, his phone suddenly chimed with a text message. Hyukjae picked it up and saw that it was from Donghae. Come to the roof.

What was he planning? He thought, staring warily at the terse message. Shrugging, he got up from his spot and hurried out of the dorm, stopping only to grab a jacket. None of the members were outside, all of them ensconced in their respective rooms. It may be a prophesied Doomsday, but it was just another normal night in the dorm for most of the members.

He didn’t really know what to expect when he reached the roof—but if he did, it certainly wouldn’t have been a picnic mat, cushions, and a blanket.

“Donghae?” he called, stepping forward. A chill ruffled through his hair, making him shiver under his jacket. “Hey, where are you?” he called again, concerned. Wild thoughts ran through his mind. Donghae wasn’t making him jump off the building to save themselves from the so called apocalypse, was he?

“Hyukjae!”

The dancer turned and saw the younger man waving at him. He came forward, and Hyukjae could barely make out Donghae wearing a ridiculous pair of dinosaur patterned pajamas. “You came!”

“You expected me not too?” Hyukjae quipped, as Donghae took his wrist and dragged him to the picnic mat. “What’s this?”

Donghae flashed him a sheepish smile as he sat down cross legged on the mat. “Um, you’ll understand soon.”

Hyukjae sat down next to him, as Donghae reached into the pocket of his pajama pants and pulled out a folded piece of paper, which he quickly scanned through. “Yup, everything’s here,” he murmured to himself.

“What’s that?” Hyukjae asked, feeling more and more confused by the minute.  “Donghae, what are we doing here?”

Donghae rocked by and forth nervously. “Well,” he stalled. “I…well, I thought that maybe we could watch the apocalypse from here tonight, Hyukjae.”

Hyukjae stared at Donghae, unable to believe his ears. Was Donghae serious? “What?” he finally exclaimed, shaking his head.

“I’m serious!”

He sighed. Any other day, he might have humored Donghae, but not after he was still mad with the brunette for ignoring him earlier. “Donghae, the apocalypse isn’t happening,” he said through gritted teeth. “Don’t be ridiculous.”

“Well, maybe not, but maybe something big will happen,” Donghae conceded.

“Nothing’s going to happen, Donghae!”

Hyukjae didn’t mean to shout, but Donghae was getting on his last nerve. He found himself on his feet, yelling out his next words.

“It was a hoax, Donghae! The article isn’t real, and we’re not going to die today! I can’t believe you believe it, and guess what? I’m sick of you using it as an excuse to do skinship with the other members because this would be the last day on earth you would ever spend with them. I’m sick of it, okay?”

Donghae blinked, shocked. “Hyukjae—”

“And the worst thing is, you ignored me the entire day. Like seriously. You didn’t write me a note.  You barely said anything to me. If the world was ending, why didn’t you want to hang out more with me?” He could hear the hurt in his own voice, and wondered if he was behaving too childishly. “Why, Donghae?”

Donghae stared up at him, his brown eyes huger than ever. Hyukjae glanced down at him and felt his chest ache at the hurt expression on Donghae’s face.  He bit his lower lip and looked down.

“Hyukjae,” Donghae whispered, and Hyukjae looked at him. He could see that Donghae’s lips were quivering, which Hyukjae knew meant he was trying not to cry. “I’m sorry you felt that way. But I just wanted to spend with much time with them at that time, because I wanted to spend the evening with you.”

“Watching out for tsunamis or aliens?” Hyukjae couldn’t help but ask sarcastically.

“No,” Donghae said quietly. “I wanted to tell you something.”

Hyukjae hesitated, his friend’s demeanor melting some of his anger, and then crouched down carefully in front of the brunette, who had his head bowed. “You wanted to tell me something?”

Donghae nodded, not looking up.

Hyukjae hesitated, and then asked, “what?”

Donghae suddenly let out a sob, which melted the last of Hyukjae’s anger. He may hate Donghae ignoring him, but he absolutely loathed it when Donghae cried.

“I swear I wouldn’t have told you—but the doomsday article made me worry that I wouldn’t have a chance to tell you, and not because the world would end or anything. It could be anything. Anything could happen that meant I can’t tell you what I wanted to tell you. So I made a list of what I had to do before I die—like a bucket list, I guess.” Donghae whispered.  “I wrote that I had to shower the members with as much love as possible in case this really was our last day. And there was another item on the list as well.”

“What is it?” Hyukjae asked quietly. He wanted to reach out and comfort his friend, but he restrained himself.

Donghae finally looked up, and Hyukjae saw his eyes were swimming with tears.

“I love you.” He bit his lip. “I love you and I’m sorry, because I didn’t dare tell you earlier. Honestly, beforehand I was content with just being your friend Hyukjae. But no. I had to tell you. I’m sorry if this isn’t what you wanted to hear, but it’s the truth, and if you hate me because of it, I’m really sor—mmphm!”

Donghae’s words were cut off when Hyukjae leaned in and captured Donghae’s lips in a kiss. Donghae froze, shocked, his arms hanging loosely by his side. He could feel Hyukjae’s warms hands on either side of his face, his lips pressing onto his with only the slightest of pressure. He could taste tears and something sweet, and finally shut his eyes, allowing himself to melt into the kiss.

They had to part for oxygen eventually, but Donghae could barely get out a word before Hyukjae leaned in to kiss him again, much more aggressively this time. He gently nibbled on Donghae’s lower lip, and Donghae’s lips parted, allowing Hyukjae to slip his tongue in. Hyukjae’s taste was sweet and addictive and Donghae lightly on the tongue, his hands locking around Hyukjae’s neck to pull him closer. Hyukjae’s own hands slipped around his waist, pulling him against his body, and Donghae almost thought he could feel Hyukjae smiling against his lips.

So many times both of them had imagined this, and none of them had ever thought it would play out this way.

They finally separated, and Hyukjae cupped Donghae’s face, his eyes locking onto the younger’s.

“I’m so sorry,” he started.

Donghae blinked, not expecting an apology. “Why?”

Hyukjae smiled slightly. “I yelled at you. I yelled at you, and you did something I didn’t even have the guts to contemplate.”

“I did?”

Hyukjae nodded. “You told me you love me.”

A goofy grin appeared on Donghae’s face. “I guess I did.”

“I didn’t even think to do that,” Hyukjae told him.  “I didn’t even think to tell you I loved you. I was scared as well. ”

Donghae smiled. “Say that again.”

“Say what?”

“I love you.”

Hyukjae rolled his eyes. “I love you.”

“Again.”

“I love you.”

“Again.”

“I love you. Now, can we talk about something else?”

“Maybe.” Donghae allowed.

Hyukjae moved his hands to Donghae’s pocket. “Can I see your bucket list?”

“What? Why?”

“I want to see what else you haven’t fulfilled.”

“No!” Donghae shouted, putting his hand over his pocket.

Hyukjae rolled his eyes and reached into his own pants pocket, pulling out the folded paper. He smiled smugly.

“How did it get there?” Donghae gasped.

“When we were kissing. You were pretty distracted,” Hyukjae unfolded the paper and scanned it. He read all the cancelled lines, and finally reached the last four.

Watch the apocalypse with Hyukjae

Tell Hyukjae I love him.

Kiss Hyukjae!!!!

Hyukjae’s eyes reached the last line and his jaw dropped. Donghae groaned and covered his face with his hands, unwilling to see Hyukjae’s reaction when he found out that Donghae’s last wish was to take a shower with the older man.

Hands pried his fingers from his face, and Donghae saw Hyukjae’s amused face in front of his. “So, you have a thing for showering together?”

Donghae smiled sheepishly. “Well, I kind of like the idea of you wet. And soapy.”

“You ert,” Hyukjae told him. “And how were you planning to lure me into the bathroom with you anyway?”

“I don’t know,” Donghae admitted. “I mean, it is something I wanted after all, so I just put it in.”

Hyukjae chuckled and held the other man closer to his body. “We’ll get to that some other time. I don’t think we should go that far just yet.”

“Says the one who reads Eunhae .”

Hyukjae’s brows furrowed and he looked down at Donghae, whose eyes glittered with innocence.

“How the did you find out?” he exclaimed.

“Last night. Really, Hyukjae, do you expect me to believe it was a Sihae fic when you were the one giving me a in the shower?”

“You knew?!”

Donghae smirked. “I did. You’re fun to tease, Hyukjae.”

Hyukjae pouted. “At least I’m not the one who believes in the end of the world.”

Donghae coughed. “Actually…I didn’t really plan to drag you up to here watch the apocalypse. It was just an excuse to get you alone. Can you kiss me again?”

Hyukjae blinked at the abrupt request. “What?”

“My lips are cold.”

“Really,” Hyukjae deadpanned, but leaned forward anyway. “Wait,” he suddenly said, pulling away. “You have to promise me one thing.”

“What?” Donghae whined, his lips still stuck out in a pout.

“You can’t slap anyone else’s butts. Ever.”

“Just yours?”

“Just mine.”

“But your isn’t satisfying enough!”

“Yah!”

“Joking. Now, kiss me.”

Hyukjae grinned and leaned forward once more. For once, he found himself totally grateful for the Doomsday prophecy, and the fact that his boyfriend sort of believed in them.

“I can’t wait for the world to end again.”

“Me, too.”
