Do You Wish We'd Fall In Love
The Saltwater Room
Dongwoon remembers when he used to spend hours standing on his balcony,
watching a certain boy sitting by the shore hug his knees while searching for stars
in the cloudy sky. He also remembers seeing the petite boy’s frame shiver. He
thought it’d be a good idea to bring him a jacket, but Dongwoon, being the chicken
he is, only managed to put one around his own body.
Dongwoon remembers the day he finally walked over to the boy, feeling his hands
inside his pockets begin to sweat as the other one turned around with the most
beautiful smile he’s ever seen and said “Hi, I’m Kikwang, what’s your name?”
Dongwoon doesn’t remember what he answered but that’s okay because he’ll
never forget that cute giggle Kikwang made after he stopped speaking.
He also recalls that certain afternoon when he was watching Kikwang listen to the
waves inside a shell he found earlier when they were walking by the shore. “Do
you wish we’d fall in love?” he heard the boy by his side speak softly. ‘All the time,
all the time,’ Dongwoon thought to himself as he turned away from Kikwang and
looked at the setting sun. That day, as he watched the other male wave goodbye
while running towards his house, he realized that the time they spent together was
never enough.
He still remembers the first day they held hands. They walked along the shore,
letting the small waves wet their feet. Kikwang asked if he knew why sparrows
love the snow so much as he held onto the taller boy’s hand. Smiling widely and
looking at the path before him, he simply said “I guess we’ll never know.” He could
feel his stomach fill with butterflies as their fingers intertwined and he was sure
he’d never felt so at home.
Dongwoon smiles as he opens the door and steps into the apartment. It smells like
kimchi fried rice and the ocean, and his smile only gets bigger. Leaving his
backpack on the floor, he walks around the apartment looking for that certain one
who has been invading his mind ever since he left for his business trip one week
ago. Finally finding him in the kitchen, he hugs him tightly as he nestles his face in
the space between Kikwang’s neck and shoulder. He hears a soft “Welcome back”
and Dongwoon swears he can hear a smile in those words.
And now, as he’s lying in bed with his arms around the smaller boy and the waves
as background music, he realizes he’s finally at home.
