Friends is a story that follows 6 best friends:Miyoung,Yoojin,Jihyun,Sunggyu,Dongwoo and Doojoon.

The best friends encounter love,friendship,marriage,divorce and unexpected relationships.

Despite their totally different personalities and downs they still try to remain as friends.

C H A R A C T E R S

Hwang Miyoung a fashion enthusiast and Yoon Yoojin's best friend from childhood. Miyoung first moves in with Yoojin after nearly marrying Park Jaebeom whom she realizes she does not love. Miyoung and Doojoon are later involved in an on-again-off-again relationship throughout the series. Miyoung dates other men during the story, such as an Chinese neighbor Luhan, her client Choi Seunghyun,her assistant Chansung, and Jang Dongwoo.Miyoung’s first job is as a waitress at the coffeehouse Central Perk, but she later becomes an assistant buyer at Bloomingdale's, and a buyer at Ralph Lauren.Miyoung and Doojoon have a daughter named Yoona by the end of the story.

Yoon Yoojin the mother hen of the group and a chef, known for her perfectionist, bossy and competitive nature.Yoojin is often jokingly teased by the others for having been extremely overweight as a child, especially by her brother Doojoon. Yoojin works as a chef in various restaurants throughout the story. Yoojin’s first serious relationship is with family friend Choi Siwon who is 21 years her senior. The couple maintains a strong relationship until Siwon expresses that he does not want to have children much to Yoojin’s dismay. Yoojin and Kim Sunggyu later start a relationship after spending a night with each other leading to their marriage by the end of the story

Nam Jihyun an eccentric masseuse and self-taught musician. Jihyun lived in uptown Seoul with her mother until her mother killed herself and Jihyun took to the streets. Jihyun is ditsy but street smart and writes and sings (badly) her own quirky songs, accompanying herself on the guitar. She has an "evil" identical twin named Jiyoon who shares Jihyun’s quirkiness but unlike Jihyun seems to be cruel and uncaring. Jihyun is childlike and innocent in disposition. Jihyun tends to use her past misfortunes such as her mother’s suicide as sympathy ploys. Jihyun has three serious relationships. Seungri (, an on and off relationship with Park Hyungsik  and Dongwoon  which ends when he moves to Minsk on a research grant. They reconcile whenever he returns but she eventually rejects him for Hyungsik.In the story she marries Hyungsik.

Jang Dongwoo a struggling actor and food lover who becomes famous for his role on Days of our Lives as Dr. Kim Joonmyun. Dongwoo is a simple-minded womanizer with many short-term girlfriends throughout the series. Despite his womanizing tendencies Dongwoo is an innocent and caring character with good intentions. Dongwoo often uses the catchphrase pick up line "How you doin'?" in his attempts to win over women. Dongwoo rooms with his best friend Sunggyu for years and later a while with Miyoung. He falls in love with Miyoung later in the story. Miyoung politely tells Dongwoo that she does not share the same feelings. They eventually date briefly, but after realizing it will not work due to their friendship (and especially Miyoung's complicated relationship with Doojoon), they return to being friends as before.

Kim Sunggyu an executive in statistical analysis and data reconfiguration for a large multi-national corporation. Sunggy quits his job and becomes a junior copywriter at an advertising agency. Sunggyu has a peculiar family history being the son of an novelist mother, and a cross-dressing Las Vegas star father. Sunggyu is known for his sarcastic sense of humor and bad luck in relationships. Sunggyu marries Yoojin, and they adopt twins at the end of the series. Before his relationship with Yoojin, Sunggyu dated Kim Hyuna and subsequently broke up with her many times. 

Yoon Doojoon Yoon Yoojin's older brother, a paleontologist working at the Museum of Natural History, and later a professor of paleontology at Seoul University. Doojoon is a sweet-natured man of good humor, although he is often clumsy and socially awkward. Doojoon is involved in an on-again-off-again relationship with Miyoung throughout the story. Doojoon has three failed marriages during the series: Miyoung, Gayoon and Yuri, a lesbian who is also the mother of his son, Kikwang. His failed love life is potentially due to his paranoia and jealousy in relationships and his divorces become a point of humor within the series. He and Miyoung have a daughter by the end of story and they confess that they are still in love with each other in the final book.
