“JOEY YOU’RE GOING TO MISS YOUR FLIGHT!”

“I’M GOING!”

The shouts echoed through the small house as the tanned boy ran about getting his last minute artifacts needed for his small trip. Joseph Jun Kang, or Joey Kang, 19, half Latino and half Korean thanks to his parents odd love story which he had no time to explain, because he was on his way to L.A. for a contest. And not just any contest, it was the one he’d only ever dreamed about trying out on. He’d be participating in “So you Think You Know K-Pop!” the hit show that travels around the U.S. in search of idols in the making to send off to South Korea to face off against one another in hopes of being signed on with a major recording label.

“JOEY! YOUR CAB IS HERE!”

1“AY VOY AMA!” he shouted frustrated and throwing the last essentials together.

Running down the stairs he stopped at the doorway where his impatient mother stood.

“And you’ll call me as soon as you get to the hotel right?! And if you win let me know, okay?! I need you to tell me!”

“Si, si, I got it! I promise.”

She gave her son another long look before hugging him tightly and signing a cross over him as accustomed to the Catholic belief.

The ride to the airport was short luckily, Joey had more than enough time to grab a meal and wait to board his flight. Looking around he began to really feel the reality of what he was getting ready to do.

Joey was about average height. His skin was a nice latte; he had full hazel eyes that were the hint to his Korean blood. He had black wavy hair that looked styled, with full lips and pearly teeth peeking from behind them, he hoped it was enough to gain attention of the potential companies. If that didn’t get them, then his voice and dancing skills would surely do so. Then it’d be bye-bye Dallas Texas, and hello Seoul South Korea.

He remembered back to a month ago at the Talent Contest in his city. The competition was fierce, but nothing in comparison to the people he’d challenge in only a few days. He’d mixed up the perfect mesh of SM’s greatest songs and made a dance routine that blew the judges away, it wasn’t until the judges noticed that the music coming forth was also from the teen that had gotten him the points he’d needed to win. That’s when he was approached by a scout looking for participants for the show. And that’s how he’d saved up and ended up where he was.

Looking off he suddenly felt his blood chill. None other than the ONLY person in Texas who he wouldn’t mind a bomb landing on him, or even his plane crashing was his enemy, Lee Dae Joon.

“Well, well, well, if it isn’t the half breed. Don’t tell me you’re on your way to compete in the K-pop contest. Too bad you’re sure to lose; in fact, my whole family is betting that you will.” he sneered, “Not that losing the money would affect us. Heck, if I wanted, I could probably buy my way into a company.”

“Yeah well, too bad money can’t buy talent.” Joey retorted dryly.

“Who needs talent when you look this good?” the elder boy laughed.

“Well at least money can fix ugly, you’re the proof.” Joey countered with an unapologetic smile. The taller of the two looked stunned speechless and instead marched off angrily.
Dae Joon was his worst enemy since high school. Thanks to his father, Joey lived and studied in a mostly Korean oriented area. But, upon meeting his mother, everyone soon learned of his split origins.

Now about that love story. See, Joey’s mom became a teacher and was offered a job to teach English abroad. Everyone knows being a teacher pays nothing and so as expected, she was a 23 year old teacher making barely enough to pay rent for her cheap apartment. Reading that room and board were included she hopped on a plane to South Korea and didn’t dare look back. It was there that she met Joey’s father, Kang Min Jo. Not knowing a of Korean, and he not knowing an ounce of English the two struggled with their feelings seeing how communicating was being the world’s biggest block, until he heard her curse in Spanish. Min Jo had studied Spanish the previous year since he’d missed the English class deadline during that time. Now being able to communicate, the two fell in love and then a few years later they married, much to Min Jo’s family’s disapproval, then along came Joey and that’s that. His father though was offered a job a few years back which he took quickly despite it having him fly back to South Korea. Joey and mother video chatted with the man often.

“I’ll pray to God, Buddah, and to every deity to bless you at your competition. Luckily, if you win, you’ll already have a place to stay!” the graying man smiled.

“Gracias appa, I promise I’ll do my best!”

Letting out a gust of air the teen settled into his seat. With the nerves he was feeling, plus Dae Joon messing up his happy bubble, already the contest was proving to be a challenge.

Earlier in New Mexico……

“Xavier are you ready to show us the dance you prepared?”  Mrs. Gomez asked a young 17 year-old boy. Said boy looked up and nodded.  He got up along with some back up dancers and walked to the middle of the room.

“Ready.” Was all he said confidently as he nodded to the person who plays the music. As soon as the person hit play the song Trouble Maker by Hyunseung of Beast and Hyuna  started playing. Xavier Ray Kang snapped along to the beat. The voice in the song sang 1! 2! 3! After that he took a breath and started to sing as well

“Ni nuneul bomyeon nan Trouble Maker.” Sang Xavier while staring to dance. He looked like a pro letting the music carry him. His female dance partner moving with him lip syncing Hyuna’s part, her name was Mei. She was one of the best dancers in the class, Xavier was the other one.

If you saw the two dancing and didn’t know them you would think they would be a couple, but to those who do know them knew they were the best of friends. The one of two friends the half Asian, half Latino male had.

“Trouble Maker!” Xavier finished singing as the song ended. As the finishing pose he and Mei were standing back to back hold one another’s hand and looking at Mrs. Gomez. The rest of the class started clapping.

“That was amazing, both of you get an A on the assignment.” She announced. She turned to the rest of the class and continued, “That’s what I like seeing, passion and love for the art of dance. I’m looking forward to see the rest of the presentations tomorrow. That’s it for today, class is dismissed.” She finished as the final bell rang signaling school was over.

Xavier than span Mei around and gave her hug. As they pulled away he bowed and thanked all the backup dancers and Mei herself.

“That was great but I was off a couple beats in my solo.” Xavier told Mei as they walked to get their bags. He nervously played with the hem of his shirt. He then looked at Mei and asked, “how come you don’t sing? You have a beautiful singing voice.”

She picked up her bag and looked back at him and shrugged, then answered with a smile, “I can’t sing in Korean, I choke up and my dance abilities are better, and you were not off in your solo. You got it down.”

Xavier smiled a small smile and grabbed his bag. “Oh Korean isn’t hard to learn.” I mentioned as I felt a little shove come from my friend. I hugged her and told her thank you. We walked out of the class room and met up with Jason my other friend.

“Let’s go to my house, Mom told me she wants you guys over for dinner.” Jason said as he put an arm over my shoulder and Mei’s.

Out of the three friends Jason was the only native New Mexican, Mei and her family where from New York and Xavier was from Los Angeles. Jason looked over to Xavier who was already snacking on a bag of homemade spicy rice cakes.

“Dude I want one.” Jason asked and reached for one.

Xavier laughed and put one in his crazy friends hand. He was happy that he had these two people as his friends. At the school Xavier was currently attending, the kids here were horrible and teased Xavier for being half Korean and half Latino. So his first day here he was bullied to the point where Jason found him on the locker room floor with some bruises and a cut on his arm from the kids.

After finding him Jason took him to the nurses were Mei was helping with another kid. She stopped what she was doing to help Xavier. As she cleaned up the cut, she talked to the latino Korean calmly and soon they became friends along with Jason.

“Jay I would love to come over but I need to pack for L.A.” Xavier said with a smile. He then looked at both of them and asked, “You guys are going to come watch my audition right?”

“I wouldn’t miss it, would you Jason?” Mei asked and looked at Jason. He pulled out his phone and checked his calendar jokingly.

“Looks like I’m gonna be busy.” He said. He heard his friend sigh and continued, “Watching ‘So you Think You Know K-Pop!’ ”

“You guys are the best.” Xavier said as he pulled his two friends close and then headed home.

Xavier was excited for this opportunity. He was about above average height. His skin was kissed by the sun. Now his eyes were almond shape but instead of the chocolate brown almond shaped eyes his father had but he inherited his mother’s Aqua colored eyes. His parents had a strange but romantic love story. As his grandmother always told him, He looked more like his father than his mother. His mother was one of the Latinas who had fair skin and light colored eyes. His jet black hair was messily spiked and if you looked closely you could see streaks of royal purple and royal blue.

With his charm, dance, and singing skills he hoped he would be unforgettable and hopefully get to go to Seoul,  South Korea. As he walked in to his house his mother came up to him and handed his bag and suitcase to him along with a ticket.

2“Oh, dios mío! Usted va a perder su vuelo mijo.” She said she said in rapid Spanish. She grabbed her keys and helped her son into the car.  Once in the car she took off for the airport. “Mijo, You don’t know how proud I am of you. Make your father and I proud.” She said as she grabbed his hand.

Xavier started to blush. “Ay Mama. I’ll try my best.” He told her as they pulled up to the airport. As he got out his mother helped him get his stuff ready to get his suitcase checked in. After they did that he turned to his mother and gave her a hug. They stood there for awhile and as he pulled away she blessed him by signing a cross over him.

“Mijo, take this. Call me when you land and get signed in.” She told him as she hand him a rosary. “Be safe and I love you.” She continued as gave him another hug and kissed both his cheeks. He watched her leave and then ran to security to get to his flight on time.

“I’m cutting this really close.” He breathed as he made it to his gate just barely on time. As he bored the plane he knew this was going to be a short but long flight.

(Present)

The flight took longer than Joey had wanted but by hailing cabs and running he’d managed to make it in time to sign in. Looking around he scouted the competition. There were a lot of groups ranging from 5 to 7 members, as were the rules. Feeling shaky he realized how intense this contest could eventually be.

Standing off to the side Joey recognized a tall thin figure. Approaching the male he realized his suspicions were in fact correct as he pounced on the taller boy.

“XAVIER!!!” He laughed taking the boy down to the ground with him, “OH MY GOSH! WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!” he stared down eagerly at none other than his very own cousin.

“The same as you I suppose!” he grinned hugging the slightly shorter male back tightly.

“Wow, I haven’t seen you since like… Forever!” Joey laughed, “You need to stop growing! You’re like what? 15?”

“No, I’m 17.” Xavier corrected.

“Hijo de su! Se-seventeen?!? Since when!? Omo… I’m getting old.”

“You’re silly cousin.” Xavier laughed. He hadn’t seen his cousin in years. Although happy to see him, it was inevitable that he could be competing against him.

“How is it that you’re taller than me, yet you’re two years younger than me?” Joey lamented while helping his younger cousin up, “Are you still living in the area? And most importantly have you already signed in?”

“My appa is taller than Tio Min Jo remember.” Xavier reminded the elder with a grin, “and no, we moved to my mother’s home town in New Mexico. I really miss the hustle and bustle of L.A. though.” Looking around he felt a sudden panic, “Yah, primo, where’s the sign up table?”

In order for the K-pop idol hopefuls to participate, they had to sign in, especially those who pre-registered and sent in the audition audio and videos. If they didn’t sign in they would be sent home with shattered dreams and have to wait tell next year, yet having to start from square one was hard alone. Out of thousands of videos and participants, only about 100 were chosen for the preliminary auditions.

“It’s right over here. Follow me!” Joey exclaimed as tried to put his arm around Xavier. The last time they saw each other, Xavier was about shoulder length to Joey and the elder could carry Xavier over his shoulders with ease. “You have grown too much, muy macho now.” He pouted.

Xavier couldn’t help to blush. “Gomawo, primo. Y-you’re taller too!”

“Not as much.” Joey grinned, his happy bubble was once again invaded when he spotted none other than the biggest jerk in the world flirting with the girl at the sign in desk.

“You okay hyung? What’s with the look?”

“I’m fine. It’s just someone else is here from Dallas.” He answered sourly.

“Oh, you mean mister plastic with the “The world revolves around me” face?” Xavier scowled spotting the man instantly, this made Joey laugh though. Xavier had a strong dislike for guys like that. Joey’s enemy looked like the type of guy who had more money than brains, “Don’t worry, one of us will have the chance to melt his face off with our awesomeness.”

“Hopefully it’s me.” He chuckled. As they got closer Dae Joon spotted them then left with a final wink to the girl before walking away.  They both noticed as they got closer, the blushing girl at the sign in table was putting things up. Xavier tensed and Joey began to fume, he was for certain that Dae Joon had something to do with this turn about.

“W-wait! I-I missed my chance to sign up?!” Xavier whimpered, eyes starting to water. He’d come so far only for his opportunity to be sabotaged.  He felt his cousin leave.

“Hey what the hell!? There’s plenty of time!”  Joey growled.

“I-I’m sorry! B-but he was the last to sign up!” she stuttered in sheer fear.

“I refuse to believe that!”

“W-well… Believe it!” the girl retorted boldly pushing her hair out of her face.

Gnawing on his bottom lip Joey’s face broke into a smile, “Duo.”

“What?”

“We’re a duo! That’s right! I’m Joey Kang, he’s Xavier Kang! We’re cousins. Please, sign him up with me.”

Looking from one to the other, Joey gave her one final look that made her cringe. Looking for his file she quickly added the information needed before handing him the badges that would get them in and around the competition.

Xavier watched this scene play out as Joey made changes to his file. Then walking towards him holding badges the elder grinned.

“SO, I got you in.” he grinned.

“Wh-what? Th-thank you!?” Xavier exclaimed hugging his cousin tightly.

“But…”

“But?”

“Looks like we’re the Kang duo.”

“W-well… that’ll work! Y-yeah! At least, now we’re not enemies!”

“Looks like the very first Spanish speaking Korean American’s are going to ROCK L.A!!!!”

“HAHA! YES!”

The two cousins shouted happily and loudly as they exited the studio. The challenges ahead shrouded in mystery, but at that moment, they felt invincible.
