The First Night

Listen

When they arrived at his house, he unlocked the door by opening the window and crawling in, leaving Minwoo outside on the porch as he waited for him to open the way to the entrance. “Ah, yeah I usually forget my keys so...” Donghyun pouted slightly, wondering where he had left them that time, not to mention where on earth Hyunseong had disappeared to, and motioned for Minwoo to come on inside. He paused at the foyer, unsure of where he should stand without dripping water everywhere, and Donghyun laughed, throwing a towel at him. Minwoo fumbled at first, dropping it repeatedly until he finally picked it up from the floor and wrapped it around himself. “Thank you...” His voice cracked before he suddenly sneezed, and Donghyun looked at him sympathetically before disappearing into his bedroom and emerging with clothes that were obviously too big for him. “Here, change into these.”  Unsure of what he should do, Minwoo blinked at Donghyun as they stared at each other, each expecting the other to do or say something first.

“Are you gonna change into those or what?” Donghyun crossed his arms and raised his eyebrows as he attempted to hide the worry he felt from noticing the boy’s shivering limbs. Minwoo nodded hesitantly, tugging at his uniform’s tie until it came loose, then looked up at the older boy to see him standing in the same position while staring without so much as a blink. “Are you going to turn around or should I start up my right here and now?” Minwoo felt a burst of confidence as he watched Donghyun’s face flush a bright red as he abruptly turned around, attempting to find something to say but failing miserably as he embarrassedly pointed at his bedroom. “Go... change in there...”  He cleared his throat, shuffling his way into the kitchen area and completely ignoring Minwoo, who was desperately trying to hide the amusement on his face by keeping his lips in a tight line, quickly walked into the bedroom, waiting until the door was closed until he allowed his giant grin to emerge, a giggle bubbling out of his throat as tugged at his lip.

“Donghyun... He’s pretty cute...” He smiled, ing his shirt and throwing it to the floor before reaching for the oversized t-shirt Donghyun had given him. Once he had slipped into dry clothes and attempted to dry most of his hair with the towel, he stepped out of the room to see Donghyun writing in his textbook as he waited for the water he had placed on the stove to start boiling. “I hope you like instant noodles.” Minwoo looked surprised as Donghyun continued to work, not even taking a glance to see if Minwoo was really standing there or not. Before Minwoo could ask if he was psychic or something, the boy with the light brown hair turned to face him, his hair still dripping from the rain. “I don’t really cook anything else, so...” His voice trailed off as he coughed awkwardly. “Those are fine.” Minwoo couldn’t help but smile at the fact that he was thoughtful enough to feed him warm food after such a storm, even if it really was all he cooked, and watched on as Donghyun turned back around to finish off the remaining math problems.

Without making a sound, he stepped close enough to touch him, gently  tossing the towel on Donghyun’s head and ruffling it against his hair as an attempt to dry it before the older boy freaked out and hit him or something. Instead, Donghyun’s eyes widened, his heart skipping more than just a few beats as he felt Minwoo’s slender fingers slide through his hair and massage his head. “Thank you for the towel and warm clothes.” His voice was so quiet that Donghyun had to strain to hear it, and yet, while he couldn’t really hear it, he could feel the sincerity from him by his presence alone. He couldn’t help but wonder just what that kid had been through to be tied to such rumors, and while the scene he had witnessed before made it seem like Minwoo would be the victim instead of another person, he still couldn’t help but feel as if his friends wouldn’t bother telling each other rumors if there wasn’t some sort of proof somewhere. He found himself somewhat thankful that the water had decided to finally start boiling, or maybe it had been for a while and he only noticed it at that moment, but however it turned out, he quickly found his escape and went to finish making their dinner before something else happened that made his heart beat a little too quickly and his mind wander a little too far.

The rest of the night seemed to fly by, the dinner was quiet, the sleeping arrangements were normal. Donghyun slept on the couch while Minwoo took the bed, not without heated arguments on who was the girl for the night, of course. And by the time morning had come, Donghyun woke up to see that breakfast was already ready and that Minwoo had already showered and gotten ready for school. “Good morning!” Donghyun rubbed his eyes as Minwoo walked in front of his crouching position on the couch, blinking until he saw the pink ruffled apron (their only apron) placed over his uniform to keep him from getting food on it. “I didn’t know how to thank you for last night, and I didn’t want you to get mad at me for using your food so I went out and bought us stuff for breakfast and....uh...cooked it.” He blushed shyly as he averted his eyes, the scent of delicious food wafting to Donghyun’s nose and causing a roar to emit  from the aroused insides of his stomach. Deciding that it would be more embarrassing to deny the obvious, he muttered a small “thanks” and stood from his position, trudging his way into the kitchen to see all of the food he had made. Minwoo had already known how he would act somehow, and he watched Donghyun’s surprise with a smile when he saw his food already in it’s own plate arranged for him to eat and go. Before he could turn around, he heard the sound of the door closing, and when he looked around, he noticed that Minwoo had left.

~

As he sat in his desk poking at his textbook, he glanced to the empty chair to his right with a frown on his face. ‘Where did he go?’ He pushed his pencil a little too hard against the paper, causing a click due to the lead flying across the desk, his pencil needing to be sharpened or replaced at that point. K.Will looked up from the book he was reading from, glancing over at the direction in which he had noticed Donghyun staring and took a moment to sigh. ‘Should I tell him?’ The thought had crossed his mind beginning from the moment Minwoo had come into his office to explain his situation to him, but he had pushed it aside even when he had seen Donghyun looking for the younger boy in the most obvious ways all morning. The lunch bell was just about to ring and he still hadn’t shown up. It wasn’t that K.Will wasn’t worried himself, but with his prior experience with these types of situations, he knew that sometimes it was better to just stay out of it. As he watched the frustrated look on the boy’s face, he found himself wondering if Donghyun even knew what he looked like right now. Before he got to continue reading to the class, the bell rang and he watched as Donghyun’s friends hopped from their seats, crowding around him as they waited for him to pack up his books and eat with them.

“Come on, we need to get our strength up for physical education!” Hyunseong lightly punched Donghyun on the shoulder as he looked at him with concern, and Jeongmin frowned as he poked his cheek. “Hyung, are you okay?” Donghyun sighed as he nodded, picking up his backpack with his shoulders drooped. “Yeah, come on, let’s go eat.” His friends watched him in surprise as he walked past them like a zombie, and K.Will merely laughed to himself and shook his head as he thought of how lovesick he looked. Not that, uh, he’d know anything about that. He glared at his phone as he remembered his date, and he shook his head, repeating no’s in his head until her smiling face got out of his head. Anyone on Earth would be better than her. Reaching for his phone, he pressed the screen to check his messages, feeling irritated that after such a great date she wouldn’t even say something. Why would he have to do everything first? Swallowing his pride, he slowly typed out words that would make him seem really super cool. “Did you sleep well?” He stared at the unsent text, trying to think of all possible replies to that before shaking his head again and preparing to delete it, with a slide of his hand, his thumb, however, pressed the send button instead, causing him to fall to his knees screaming.

On his way back to lunch, Donghyun’s p.e. teacher, Hyorin, stopped him in the hallway. “Ah, Donghyun, could you take these papers to the home ec room? I need to change into my tracksuit.” She flashed him one of her famous dazzling smiles, and he nodded, silently taking the papers from her as he looked around the hallway for the boy who had been out of his sight since morning. Was he a ghost? Did he come to the school to forever imprint himself into his mind only to disappear forever and cause him to wear cold socks until the day he died? As the horrific thought crossed his mind, he shuddered, walking to the home ec room and opening the door without even knocking. Minwoo turned to face him, blood dripping from his hands and clothes as he held onto the giant cleaver in his hand. Dropping everything in his arms, he screamed, turning to run away only to run face first into the swinging door behind him. Falling back, he hit his head on the floor behind him, being breathless from the horrendous experience. Minwoo’s tinkling laughter filled the room, but soon dissipated as he trotted over to where he was laying, wiping the blood off of his hand with a towel. “Donghyun-ah, you okay?” His eyebrows raised as he examined the face below him, and Donghyun groaned in response.

Frowning, he reached out both of his arms to help raise Donghyun up off the floor, helping him lean back on the wall as he put his hand over the lump on his head. “You really need to stop freaking out every time you see me.” He sighed, running over to the fridge to get some frozen veggies, then ran back to place it onto his head. “I know about the rumors, but I had hoped you didn’t believe them.” He smiled sadly, placing Donghyun’s own hand over the bag so he could move his. “I had hoped that after last night...” His voice trailed off as he got quiet, then he shook his head and stood up. “Well, nevermind. I’m just glad you’re okay.” He took off the apron he had borrowed from the class, tossing it into the laundry basket before washing his hands with soap and water. As the room only seemed to get quieter, he dried his hands, walking to the door until he paused to look at Donghyun one more time. “Lunch will be over soon. If you can’t make it to class, you should go to the nurse’s office.” He had wanted to help him, but the fact that Donghyun was always scared of him bothered him, especially since it was half his fault that he had gotten hurt to begin with. Donghyun looked surprised at the sudden coldness, watching as Minwoo walked out of the room without so much as a second look. As he much as he felt like the biggest douche in the world, he still found himself wondering why the kid was covered in blood.

When it was time for P.E. to start, Donghyun followed Hyunseong to the locker room to get dressed for exercise. His school was rich enough to supply showers and even a sauna as if anyone really wanted anything like that when you’re already dying from sweat, but it was there, nonetheless, and some of the major jocks actually used it. As he pulled off his pants, he looked around the locker room for Minwoo. It was almost time for class to begin and he wondered if he had the grades to make up for skipping two different classes in the same day. As he wondered about him, he quickly dressed and ran into the gym only to find himself shocked that Minwoo had already dressed and been waiting inside with the teacher. “He’s adorable, he’s just really, really stupid.” He faintly heard Minwoo laugh as he flipped through Hyorin’s phone, and he couldn’t help but be irritated at him. ‘Here I was worried he was having problems, and he’s giggling over some guy?!’ He glared as he picked up a basketball, bouncing it as hard as he could on the floor so it would lightly tap Minwoo’s hair. If he had wanted to hit him hard, he would have, but it was enough to get him to turn around, and he couldn’t deny that the angry look on his face made it well worth it. The way Minwoo’s brows furrowed and his lips curved into an angry pout made Donghyun’s facial features do just the opposite, and as he laughed like an idiot, Minwoo fumed as he crossed his arms angrily.

“What the hell is wrong with you?!” He walked over to him as he spoke, his voice squeaking, which only made him look cuter to Donghyun. “It slipped, I swear.” He continues to laugh obnoxiously, only to laugh even harder as Minwoo tried to hit him repeatedly, his tiny fists barely even causing a tickle. He didn’t notice that his friends were staring at him with smirks on their faces, and neither did Minwoo who only got angrier the harder he laughed. Finally, the teacher called them all to attention, and Donghyun was left wiping his happy tears while Minwoo rolled his eyes and walked away. When they were divided into teams, Donghyun was shocked to find himself being next to Minwoo in the last calls, when she called out their names, Minwoo just sighed and walked away. “Minwoo.... You’re in class?” Hyorin tried to remind him gently as to not seem to have favoritism, and Minwoo turned to glare at her. “Why of all-” She cut him off silently by merely smiling and winking at him, waving him back to the lineup and laughing. “Today you’ll be stretching your partners. The younger will help the elders stretch by spreading their legs as far as they can possibly go. Screams of pain mean nothing to me.” Everyone who was in the “older” group stared at her in horror as their eyes widened, a glint coming from the eyes of anyone in the “younger” group who had a score to settle.
