Foreword
There were many fine Thursday afternoons like this one, that would have gone unnoticed in my book had it not been for the one of the worst moments of my life.
I was shopping for a loaf of bread, I remember. My mother had practically beat me out of the house with a broomstick, threatening to feed me to the wolves if I didn't listen to her. I had run out of the house wearing grey sweats and a black fitted t-shirt. I didn't look like much, but I figured that this would just be another run of the mill errand.
Boy was I ever wrong.
I saw him in the produce section. I know I shouldn't have been there because the bread was on the other side of the store, but for some reason, fate had placed me in there.
He was a gawky young man, sort of thin, brownish red hair, and he was doing nothing more than looking for apples and yet my eyes were glued to him.
It was Yoo Youngjae. I had attended the same high school as him freshman year, but because my mother was always on the move, I never stayed in one area for too long. It used to bother me, leaving my friends behind. But I quickly grew to learn that friends always get replaced no matter how long you stay in one spot. I learned that people were all too similar: deceptive, cold, arrogant, and that one day or another that side was going to fully come out and break down the walls of friendship built with years of patience.
I tended to forget most of the passing faces of my childhood, but Yoo Youngjae I could never forget.
