byun baekhyun had graduated from the academy a year earlier than expected. he had left all his same age friends behind, trading sitting through lectures and labs for finishing top of his graduating class - a year younger than all those who got their diplomas with him. they offered him a ship and crew, wanted to give him the title of captain of the fleet, a great honour for anyone and never offered to someone straight out of the academy.

to everyone's surprise, baekhyun respectfully declined.

no one quite understands why he left the promise of his own ship to fly and his own crew to direct to serve second in command to the captain of a non-fleet ship, roaming the galaxies with a vessel that was in less than mint-condition, no real destination and a crew that aren't all professionaly trained. if you'd ask baekhyun, though, he understands just fine.

he'd tell you he always did believe those stories his mother would tell him as a child - the ones about space cowboys. and it wasn't just enough to see if they were really out there through the eyes of the fleet 

he had to be one.
