Along the Way

The Jaywalkers

Ae Ri shifted in her sleep, not able to sleep due to the shaking train. She let out a sigh, and gave up the hope of getting any sleep that night, turning her attention to the window instead. Seoul was passing by as a mixture of city lights, busy streets and tall buildings. The longer away the busiest parts came, the lesser the lights were. Now and then, the suburbs would appear as small groups of light flickers, only to die out again a while later. There weren't many passengers on the train that night.  Only a few people; some sleeping, some reading. The only sound in the train came from an old bum, who was snoring loudly in the opposite corner of the train compartment, while a trail of drool was finding its way through his greasy beard. A big, worn bag laid on the seat beside him, filled with stuff god knows what he was going to use for. To top it all, he had a fox brush tied on his jacket.

The silence, however, was abruptly broken when two  girls barged through the train doors and giggled their way towards a seat. One of the girls stumbled forward, dragging the other girl behind her. By the amount of times the girls tripped over themselves and each other it was obvious they were really drunk. One of the girls managed to find her seat while the other landed on the floor with a loud 'bump'. The two girls broke out in a loud laughter that never seemed to end. Ae Ri turned her head to Jonghyun, who was sleeping soundly in the seat next to her, and wondered how he managed to sleep through all the noise.

"I gotta... toilet", one of the girls slurred and stumbled up from her seat. Somehow, which may have been on purpose, she managed to fall into Jonghyun. Jonghyun was so deep asleep he didn't even seem to notice. The girl's eyes widened when she seemed to realize how handsome Jonghyun was. She smacked her sweaty palms on Jonghyun's cheeks and smirked.

"Well, hello sir", she sang. The whole scene of the drunk girl almost spitting Jonghyun in the face, and Jonghyun still sleeping made Ae Ri feel sick.

"Excuse me?" Ae Ri spoke up. "I believe the toilet is that way", she said and pointed. The girl frowned and tried to focus on Ae Ri.

"Who cares? I-" her words were interrupted by a hiccup, "-don't need a like you to tell me where to go."

"Probably not, but please leave my boyfriend alone", Ae Ri said. Her eyes widened when she realized what she just called Jonghyun. 'It was just to make the girl disappear', Ae Ri excused herself in her head, even though she knew that the word hadn't been necessary at any point.

The other girl had now walked to them and a diva pose, placing her hands on her waist. She looked at Ae Ri as she was a piece of trash and frowned. Just as she was about to speak, her words were replaced by a gross substance that splashed all over Jonghyun's T-shirt. All of the girls widened their eyes when they realized what had happened.

"Oh my god", one of the girls laughed. "Come on, Eun Chae, run!" She said and the two girls ran down the train compartment, laughing, like puking over a stranger was the funniest thing ever.

"Yah! Come back here!" Ae Ri shouted after them, but the girls was already out of sight. She turned to Jonghyun, the puke soaking his shirt and pants.

"Aish", Ae Ri muttered under her breath. "I'll be back in a minute", she excused herself, just in case Jonghyun happened to be awake. She opened the door to the gross train toilet, and took all of the paper she could carry in her hands, then pushed up the tap with her elbow and let the water soak some of the paper.

The train suddenly jerked left on the railways, and Ae Ri lost her balance. She let out a cry in pain as she was thrown into the wall and afterwards fell forward, her forehead slamming into the hard sink. She legs went numb under her as a pain shot through her knees and a thumping headache throbbed in her head. After she caught her breath, she tried to get up from the floor, but something inside her wouldn't let her. It seemed that reality finally had hit her during the fall.

She was sitting on the cold floor of a train toilet with pain shooting through her body, getting paper so she could wipe of the puke two drunken girls had spilled over Jonghyun. Jonghyun... the boy was practically a stranger. They knew nothing about each other, and still she had pulled him into this game Minho and her played. Right now, Minho was probably searching for her. Barging into her apartment, which she never should've given him the keys to in first place, asking everyone Ae Ri knew, confronting her friends. The thought of Minho knocking on her parent's door made Ae Ri feel sick. The worst part was that she had no idea how Minho felt about all of this. Was he crying right now, trying to find her to apologize? Or was he just angry and drunk? It was probably the last, but Ae Ri still couldn't help but feeling bad. She had left him behind, broken all her promises. She had run off with a stranger. Minho needed her, she knew that. He told her all the time and it was one of the few things he didn't lie about. Minho had always been a wreck of emotions. Ae Ri had been that solid wall, keeping him calm. Now, there was no one to take care of Minho; no one to look past his facade, no one to calm him down, no one to cheer him up and no one to prevent him doing something stupid. No one.

The tears were streaming down her cheeks, as Ae Ri forced herself up from the floor. She couldn't be this pathetic. This was her own fault. She grabbed the paper for Jonghyun, laying by her side and ignored the shooting pain in her legs and she walked back to her seat. To her surprise, she found Jonghyun awake. He was looking at his shirt, almost touching it, when Ae Ri grabbed his wrist.

"Don't touch it."

Jonghyun looked at her, still groggy from his sleep. "You did this?"

"What- no!" Ae Ri hurriedly shook her head. "Some drunken girls came by some time ago, and wanted to leave a gift before they left, I guess."

Jonghyun studied her face, trying to read her. "If you say so", he mumbled, giving up looking past Ae Ri's walls. "Even if you did, it's okay, though", he added.

"I told you, I didn't do it." Ae Ri took the paper in her hands and tried to dab of puke, but it was stuck to the fabric. Jonghyun realized it was impossible and stopped Ae Ri's persistent movements.

"What are you doing?" Ae Ri questioned, as Jonghyun pulled his shirt over his head and walked towards the toilet.

"I better wash this off before it turns permanent", Jonghyun said as he closed the door to the toilet. He came back a moment after, now wearing a completely drenched T-shirt. Ae Ri couldn't help but let out a small chuckle despite her mood. He looked ridiculous. Jonghyun smiled too.

"At least the puke's off, right?"

"Actually, there's a still a bit on your back", Ae Ri kindly pointed out.

"Aish!"

On the other side of the glass, the world was flying by. The dawn was slowly breaking free of the horizon while the warm side of the color palette creating a swirl of colors on the sky. A hue of orange blended with different shades of red and purple, growing more and more vivid with time. The small town beneath were lit up by the colors, the first people uncovering from the previous night. Ae Ri rested her forehead on the turbid window as she watched the day wake up outside. She let her eyes wander to Jonghyun, who was drawing small artworks in the dust of the window with the tip of his finger. His eyes met hers and he sent her a soft smile.

"Good morning", he said, even though none of them had slept since the episode with the puke.

"Morning", Ae Ri mumbled.

"Not to be demanding or anything... but where are we going?" Jonghyun asked with his eyebrows slightly raised. Ae Ri turned quiet, most of all just wanting to avoid this subject. She had no idea; all she knew was that they had to get away from Minho.

"I don't know", Ae Ri admitted.

"You don't?" Jonghyun asked her. Ae Ri shook her head and avoided eye contact. Jonghyun seemed to be debating how to handle the situation, but in the end a satisfied smile fell upon his lips. Ae Ri watched his facial expression with confusion.

"I like it", Jonghyun decided. Ae Ri furrowed her eyebrows.

"You like it?"

Jonghyun nodded. "Yeah, you know, this is exciting and new. I usually read about this kind of stuff in the books, but I never thought I'd find myself in a situation like this."

"But, Jonghyun, this is a not some book with a happy ending. This is real life. I think you forgot the fact that we're currently escaping my violent boyfriend - well, ex-boyfriend - and we have no idea where we're going. We barely have money, we don't have any place to stay, and at some point we're going to get kicked out of this train."

Despite Ae Ri's dropping mood, Jonghyun still remained his calm smile, which was close to driving Ae Ri insane. How could he be so calm about this?

"Okay, I could've have lived without the chasing ex-boyfriend part, but we'll figure something out. And as soon as we get to a bank I can get us some money. That's one step on the way, right?"

Jonghyun's optimistic speech couldn't pick up Ae Ri's mood though. "I don't know... Everything just seems so impossible right now. We don't even know where we're going", she muttered and looked out the window.

"That's what's makes it exciting!" Jonghyun said. "Maybe we'll get lost, sleep in the wild, get bitten by a dog or chased by cops, I don't know. But what I do know is that I can't wait to get started. I've been trapped in my room for so long, that I forgot what the rest of the world was like. This seems like the perfect adventure to remind me."

Jonghyun leaned forward in his seat and a smirk found its way to his lips.

"Who knows, maybe we'll even fall in love along the way."
