Prologue
a blissful summer
Last summer, they’d been lying down on the tender grass, waiting as time gone by; the lush grass tickling their very ears. Baekhyun had felt so in peace, so calm, so happy. As hours passed, they would be talking endlessly, oblivious to the existence of time. Momentarily in between the conversations shared between both of them, awkwardness prevailed. There were moments where they would laugh about almost everything and then instantly have silence engulf the atmosphere. During moments like these, they would turn to face each other; unaware of each other’s feelings but trying to get into the head of the other. And then, Chanyeol would whisper, “What if I leave you one day?”
Without even thinking, Baekhyun’s lips would curve downwards into a frown. After exhaling deeply he would then say, “I would die.” On hearing this, a mixture of feelings would flood Chanyeol’s mind, making him unsure of how to react. At the end, he would choose to hide his feelings, questioning Baekhyun with, “Does our friendship mean that much to you?” When Baekhyun hears this, he would feel his heart sink, unsure of whether Chanyeol meant to conceal his own feelings or if the question was intended to offend. Baekhyun would then, choose to reveal a smile, shut his eyelids, and fall asleep beside him, with a strange feeling in his heart; in his mind answering, you mean that much to me.
During the night, he would then unconsciously slide his hand into the latter’s, intertwining their fingers together. Perhaps it was unconsciousness- perhaps it wasn’t. All Baekhyun knew was: During that summer, he felt heat- felt warmth. Little did he have known that it was his last summer knowing how to feel; how to be truly happy.
